Digital Brush Impressionism

October 9, 2012
This filters is not an attempt to duplicate impressionistic painting styles, but to create unique digital brush looks. There are a variety of styles that it can create like a little Monet, a little Van Gogh, kinda chalk, kinda pastel, maybe even poster paints. But, not really any of those things. It is just digital messing with an image. I tried for lots of looks from illustration to abstract all in one simple filter. Hope some folks can find it useful. Remember to use the pixel size slider to fine tune the results.

It produces a wide range of cartoon funny faces. The guy doesn't change much but his expression does. You can even add a foggy kind of drop shadow or use your own image as a background. Just some goofy fun …....

This filter was developed using FF forum tips from Ghislaine. This filter is a version 2 that unlike the previous one will seamless tile. It has several other minor changes as well. Using your own images or textures will add to the variety of images.

Kinda Abstract Plaid

Well maybe it doesn’t look anything like plaid, but it is abstract and I had to call it something. It does not tile seamlessly, so it works best as a background.

Scratchy Shading

May 10, 2012
I made this filter to be used with flat illustrations or cartoons. Since there are no flat color images in the internal image base it is hard to show what it does. Basically it shades the edges of the image and adds a texture or scratches. The result on the right image gives shading to otherwise posterized or cartoon images. It can be pretty severe or subtle. It can produce some pretty weird effects on photos. Maybe some folks will like it as an image effect processor.

Random Graphic Tile Generator

May 2, 2012
There is a kind of sameness and randomness both with this tile generator. The tiles are not seamless but they can be placed side by side for a nice classic tile look. They are designed to be square, but can be in any shaped image to produce a background. I was heavily influenced by recent work by CfandM in producing this filter. His work is always an inspiration.

The image result is either slightly improved or radically different. As its title says the result can be pretty strange at times, but hopefully pleasing. An outline slider gives an artificial detail look to the results.

Digital Impressionism

It is not meant to copy any painting style, but to produce computer art. The background is rough and colored. Spattered paint like texture is distributed around the image. This is an attempt to make a filter that does not mimic an art affect, but produces an original digital style effect.

This filter kinda does the same thing using a small version of the image itself to create the texture shading. You can change the size and color of the texture and even add outline for more detail. I couldn't use Snoppy as an example image, but I think you get the idea.

Simple Image Tiling

January 19, 2012
You have lots of cool textures and seamless tiles. What next? A quick way to test out how your textures look or to create backgrounds based on them, is to use this simple image tiling filter. Is in important that your input tile images be square, but the image you are tiling them into can be any shape or size. Because tiling images of different resolutions can produce varying quality results, I have included controls for smoothing, sharpening, and color control. The sample presets do not really show the full potential of the filter. Using your own images, especially seamless ones, can produce really nice results. Remember to start with a square tile.

Homemade Paper Texture

November 15, 2011
With this filter you can use any image to add an embossed background texture to your main image. It is kind of like painting on a textured paper. It is more versatile than the examples displayed because it works even better when the background is tiled seamlessly.

It is best to use a square background image. There are many texture filters here in the library that would produce cool embossed background. They can be any resolution, but it is fun to experiment. Just remember to tile them. You can get lots of variations from one background by changing the texture size which you can tweak with the pixel size slider. Really small settings can make the image look like rough painting effects.

This is a way to add color in only some areas of an image. Also part of this filter is an outline overlay effect. The ability to change the color of both the stain and the outline makes for some unusual image effects.

If you add a stained effect to the carve you get the carved depth emphasized with a color cast. You get carved amount control and stain color control with this filter.

Carved Wood Grain

You have both style and grain depth control. There is also a secondary smaller cross-grain texture that can be controlled to make the wood look as if it was rough sawed. If the stretch is reduced you can get a rougher bark or cork like look. This is not fancy wood-grain, but is an easy way to add a grain texture to your image.

Paint By Number Poster

Because the poster levels are controlled separately in each color channel, you can vary which colors are posterized more or less than others. This way you can make the poster effect as natural or unnatural as you want. You can make your image kinda look like a paint by number painting or more abstract softer limited pallet image.

When wood is sandblasted the softer part of the grain is removed leaving a rough embossed grainy surface. This filter works best with images that have large areas of flat color such as skies. You can get the effect on more detailed images by adjusting the Blast Smoothness slider. There is an overlay color which will appear either in the peaks or valleys of the emboss depending on the carve settings.

It also adds an outline which can vary from dark to saturated color. The grain effect also can vary the appearance of the image. It kind of looks like illustrations found in old books, especially old school books. You can create a line art look with flat color. At extremes the color is somewhat out of whack like the printing press is not in register or old. Sometimes the details are softened and other times they become embossed texture. The light and dark balance of the image determines how different areas are affected. Some images work better than others. The pixel size slider can bring back some of the original detail.

Antiquing is accomplished by covering the artwork with a solid color and then wiping most of it off to get an aged effect. Splatter is usually done by flicking a tooth brush loaded with paint at the image to give it a speckled texture. This filter tries to combine both of these techniques together so your images can have a crafty antique look. You can even add streaks to make it appear as if a rag has been rubbed across your image.

It is somewhat like the look some copper enamels produce when they melt and cool leaving a rough surface. I call it psycho because the effect is pretty wild and unpredictable.

There is a great filter in the collection by Mike Blackney called Materialiser. It is a cool filter which I use, but I wanted something simpler and a little faster. Mine uses a different approach and focuses on highlight control and adding a second color to allow a more varied patina on sculptures. The finishes tend to be matt to satin surfaces depending on how the highlight is used. There is no high gloss stuff here. I also added some grainy texture for folks who want to use the filter for making fancy spheres or balls. Hope that makes it useful for non 3D folks as well. It is best to use the filter in a square image.

September 2, 2010
A nice commercial filter that is no longer available is Buzz Simplifier. This filter attempts to recreate that filter. It simplifies the image without over posterizing or blurring it. It smoothes out the colors and allows you to emphasize the edge detail. The image does not lose too much definition unless you want it that way. I have also included an outliner, which can be turned off or on, to add a richness and graphic look. This is an imitation of combining simplification and outline to make an image pop that I have been using on many of my images for a decade. It is nice to have it all in one filter rather than many steps with filters and actions as I had to use in the past. This filter was only possible after FF version 2 was introduced. TIP … The pixel size slider is great for tweaking and improving the results.

This filter gives and image a gesso like embossed background. It is a very painterly effect. You can either use your image as inputted or switch to a slightly smoothed version to make it look more arty. You can use sliders to vary the size, depth, and direction of the painted texture.

Pseudo-HDR Color Control

It is more of a rework. I have created a color control and image combine mode area in the sliders which expands the range of the HDR like image outputs. It still does a great job of bringing detail out of shadow, but also darkens blown out areas of your image as well. At extreme settings of details you can use the smooth slider to diminish the halo effect produced by over sharpening. At it’s far right position the halo softens to a soft glow which makes a smoother transition at sharp edges. This is not a perfect HDR filter, but it can produce many HDR like effects in your image.

It also adds an outline which can vary from dark to saturated color. The grain effect also can vary the appearance of the image. Tip: The pixel size slider can really tweak the end result.

With the Ink slider to the left the grain is smoother and colored by the image. When that slider is to the right the grain becomes more pronounced and black in color. The grain is purposely rough to give images a more rustic look. There are lots of color and detail sliders to change the final look of the image. It may be too extreme for images that you want to look very realistic, but it is capable of some real cool artistic effects.

February 26, 2010
This filter allows you to produce many grain combinations. From large to fine grain and colored to black or white and combinations of all. Over exaggerations and combinations of different sliders can produce images that end up distorted and painterly with added grain. At extreme settings the image will abstract and become all grain. The grain effect can end up very subtle or very complex.

Tip: The mix slider, grain above/below box, and the pixel size slider can radically change the look of all the other settings.

It combines grain, poster, outline, contrast, and various blending methods to create a funky rough and wild image result.

Tip: Every slider has some effect on the other sliders. Move one a little and everything changes.

Mixed-Media ILLustrator

February 17, 2010
One mixed media style of painting uses gesso or paint mixed with filler material such as sand or fibers to produce highly textured paintings. Different types of paints can be used such as poster paints, acrylics, or even thin water colors over gesso texture. This makes for a cool mixed media effect. Lots of mixed media styles can be reproduced with the controls of this filter. It’s all about experimentation. Just slide the sliders.

Tip: The surface control slider controls where and how much texture is placed on the canvas. The other sliders determine the paint styles used.

Pre-School Pollack

February 10, 2010
Jackson Pollack was a well known abstract artist who painted pictures by splashing and dripping paint on large canvases. Now you can do the same. OK, maybe it’s not art but it is kind of cool. Just play with the controls or keep hitting Next Variant button until you find something you like.

Tip: Low pixel size settings will just produce grain-like textures.

Pseudo-HDR

February 8, 2010
This filter can create High Dynamic Range type pictures using only one input image. You can make sky and clouds stronger without overwhelming the entire image. Faces can be pulled out of shadows. Brighter sharper images can be produced without washing out colors. Detail can be pulled out of night shots. Graphic art like images can be created at the extreme limit of the slider settings. You can either improve or be creative with any type of image. Give all the presets a try on your images to see which work best.

Tips: This filter is best used with images with a broad range of image types. It is best to test it out on some of your own images to see the full effect. The Life preserver image is too well balanced to see what the real possibilities of the filter are. It also will produce some real artistic effects on low resolution or heavily cropped images. As always the pixel size slider will greatly affect the final results.

The size of globs and the image distortion can be controlled. You control glob color and the color and detail of the image also influences the color and shape of the explosions. Lots of variations are possible.

Tip: As always the pixel size slider has lots of affect on the final image.

Texture Impressionism

February 2, 2010
This filter uses both texture and distortion on the image to create artistic results like some types of impressionist painting. Various types of canvas like backgrounds are possible. The extremes possible are simple texture backgrounds to wild combinations of image and texture that are abstract and crazy.

Tip: This filter works best on simpler images. Detail becomes lost as the picture becomes more abstracted. Unless you don’t mind your original becoming lost in the mix it is best to keep the pixel size slider at a low setting.

HDR Color Contrast

February 2, 2010
Some of the effects possible with this filter are similar to the popular High Dynamic Range type filtering. By adjusting the contrast and detail sliders you can achieve varies degrees of detail and color contrast. By increasing detail and increasing saturation and image can be made to pop right off the page. The extreme manipulation of the sliders can lead to even more intense and unusual effects.

Tip: When sliders are moved to their farthest limits, haloing will often occur. You may like this effect, but if not, decreasing the pixel size slider will help lessen this distortion.
