It's a fairly open filter, meaning i didn't reign in and restrict the controls too much. That also means you'll get some duds when you use randomization. Still, I think this filter warrants the more open approach. And yes, there's lots of controls, but that's all part of the open aspect of the filter.

Charred 1c1

May 31, 2012
This filter simulates something badly burned and thus charred. It was originally made in Filter Forge version 2.xx but I never released it. I've now cleaned it up a bit, revised it slightly and all in version 3.xx.

The filter, at first glance, wouldn't seem to have much variation to it, but if you add in ambient occlusion and play with the lighting settings, you'll find it's a bit more versatile than it looks initially.

The color controls mostly control some of the noise pattern.

Dragonfly Wings 1k

May 30, 2012
I don't expect everyone to get this. This is a very abstract filter. I like it because it reminds me of an old Chinese art style that i call "Bamboo Art". I don't know that that's its official name, but that's what i call it.

It should make some nice bamboo sort of of water settings... abstractly. It could be used for backgrounds, also.

Abstracts are all about what YOU see in the image. First impressions are key. You don't have to look for anything; it's just what hits you when you first look at it, or even when you look further at it.

Earth, Ore and other 1a

May 28, 2012
This started out as a 'Coal' filter and broadened out as I went. It may take some tweaking to get a decent variation as I didn't want to restrict the scope and scale of this too much. Thus, the "Next Variant" button may or may not produce a finished looking version each time.

Take some time to get to know the controls. This filter can produce a fairly broad range of earthy type effects.

Chipped and Eroded 1a

May 18, 2012
This filter has seven branches to it. Almost every control has a number at the end of it's name. That number corresponds to the branch that control is in. Thus, changing all numbers ending in the same number would change just that branch. The final effect is made up of ALL the branches.

Probably the best way to use this filter is to sel ect one of the 20 presets and work fr om there.

Also note that anti-aliasing is turned OFF in most of the presets, so if you desire anti-aliasing you'll most likely need to turn it back on.

Bars - Prison 1c

December 26, 2011
I know there are other bar type filters in the library. I just wanted to do one myself. This one should offer some options that maybe the others don't. I don't know; I haven't really looked over the others.

One thing to be aware of is that by making this a surface type filter, when ambient occlusion is added the look can get a bit odd and you may have to adjust for it.

Another thing is if you get a totally solid image just lower the "Frame Width" slider and it should be fine.

I could have added some color control but blue and chartruese prison bars just didn't seem appropriate, so i didn't :)

Frame - Outside the Picture 1

August 16, 2011
It used to be difficult to make a frame that didn't cover your image somewhat. This filter corrects that. It's all manual controls, so you'll have to adjust it to suit your needs. Perhaps someone else could make it automatic where the frame would adjust to fit around the image automatically.

I'm putting this in the snippet category and as such, there are no fancy borders or frames on this one. Add whatever you like.

I've also made it a surface filter, but you only need to turn the height under the lighting tab down to zero and it's the same as a simple filter.

Acoustic Ceiling Tile 1w

May 5, 2010
Increase the mortar width if you increase the repeat or mortar will not show.

This is a simulation of those 12 inch by 12 inch acoustic tiles and some variants. It's a fairly simple and fast filter. I originally made this for Version 1, but decided to release it to Version 2 since a number of things were made easier and it just works better in Version 2.

To increase the amount of texture, simply increase the "Surface Height" under the "Lighting" tab.

I also made this a surface filter to increase the versatility a bit, but if you want to see it how it would be as a simple filter, simply turn the "Surface Height" to zero.

The "Tiles - Number" slider will only work if you check the "Tiles - Add More" checkbox.

The "Bevel - Multiple" will only work if "Tiles - Add More" is turned on and "Bevel - Single" works when that same checkbox is turned off. These are for controlling the bevels around the tiles.

Kaleidoscopic Swirls 1g1

November 24, 2008
This is a creative, construction filter. It is meant to produce ideas as much as textures. By this, I mean that you can use this filter to derive ideas for other filters. It is an open-ended filter, meaning there are no limits or remappings to limit the number of effects possible. This does mean you have to learn a little bit about the controls in order to use this more effectively.

The number one positions on the "Curves" selector is no curves are added. The rest of the positions all use different curve components.

The same is true for the "Noise" selector. Position #1 is no noise. The rest all use different noise components.

The Kaleidoscope checkbox cuts the kaleidoscope in and out of the routine.

The curve controls are labeled simply 1, 2, 3 and so on. This is because using so many different curve components would be confusing to have controls for every curve node of every different curve component. #1 control is the first in every curve, and thus, the most important.

Rock Face - Hard 1

This is NOT meant to simulate smoothed, finished marble as you might find on a countertop, though you might find some uses along those lines in some instances with some settings.

My thanks to Steviej, who has been a great help in giving me feedback on my filter creations. Thanks, Steve :)

September 11, 2008
This filter used to be called Color Background Generator. I changed it because i realized you could also do black and whites.

At any rate, I used to do a lot of photo manipulations, erasing the backgrounds and replacing them with something else. Making those backgrounds wasn't all that difficult, but it was often limited to finding or making a gradient and then mixing it around so it didn't look like a gradient.

Thus, when Filter Forge came along, I realized it could do this a lot quicker and a lot simpler with an endless variety almost at the push of a button.

So, there ya go. Have fun, be productive!

Waterfall sub Falls 1z1

September 2, 2008
This filter simulate waterfalls, streams, falling rain and possibly other liquid forms. It's essentially derived from my Waterfalls filter with all the extra effects stripped out.

When you set the checkbox to 'Refraction', there is one slider that only works with this, the 'Falls Seed Refraction'. Instead of using a blend component to blend two perlins together for the falls, it now uses a refraction compnent to do this. Thus, a slider was included to control how much refraction.

All other controls work with all other settings.

If you get a black line along the vertical sides of the 'falls', use the 'Falls Edge none - more' and/or the 'Falls Density' control to remove it if desired.

This filter will not always work with non-square images due to the profile gradients.

Turn the "Starts" all the way to the left for simple corrections. Move them right for more complex and strong changes.

It utilizes my 'Perfect Arc' snippet to make the arc and alter the arc. You can have transparent backgrounds or normal image backgrounds with this. You may also vary the size, opacity, length and ends of the rainbow and the angle at which the rainbow is displayed.

You will need to adjust the Offset controls as you change the rainbow size and arc to prevent the wrap-around of the image top and bottom.

If your rainbow is invisible, simply turn up the Rainbow Strength control or adjust the offset controls.

Use the zoom control to remove the wrap-around when the rainbow is on a diagonal.

This filter will 'break' non-square images due to the profile gradients used.

That's about all this snippet does. You can alter the colors and width and vertical position as well.

The original bend idea was borrowed from TaTa Pushkarova's Rainbow filter. I simply improved on that idea. Also instrumental in getting this bend correct was Ssamm. He helped me out a great deal! So, thank you to both!

January 11, 2008
This filter utilizes Uberzev's "Any Angle Rotate" snippet.

For more of a rough texture, turn the anti-aliasing off.

Not all of the colors will work for every selector position.

Position 1 = colors 1 vertical and horizontal
Position 2 = colors 1, 2, and 3 vert and horizonal
Position 3 = colors 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 vert and horiz
Position 4 = colors 1 - vert, 1, 2, and 3 -horizontal
Position 5 = colors 1 - vert, 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 -horiz
Position 6 = colors 1, 2 and 3 - vert, and 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 horiz

If you have what looks like a wavy pattern across the image, simply change some of the darker colors to brighter. It's the dark that is creating the look of depth and thus the waviness.

Images that are rotated may not tile correctly in seamless mode.

If your surface is too smooth, turn up the 'Height' control under the 'Lighting' tab.

Color Dispersion Mixer 1f

December 6, 2007
This filter disperses and mixes color values from color gradients fairly evenly across an image. It is about the best way I've found of making a dispersed, randomly mixed color field.

Varying or changing any given color value will somewhat alter the entire field but keep the dispersion and random mixing of the colors.

Switch positions correspond to the following component types:

1. 3 color gradient

2. noise gradient

3. spectrum

4. 5 color gradient

Note that the color spectrum has no color inputs, therefore, no color controls in the main interface.

Note also that you only need to use any two of the gradients. Just remove the rest from this snippet and plug your two into where the switches plug in. I added all the color gradients here to show how each works with each other.

Shingles - Asphalt 1

December 5, 2007
This filter simulates North American style asphalt roofing shingles.

It utilizes a stripped down version of the 'Zoomer' snippet by Uberzev to enlarge the size of the shingles.

There are two shingle types represented, the elongated and the shorter version. Use the 'Shingle type' checkbox to pick the type you want.

The 'Distort Edges' slider will make just the shingle edges distort a small amount to give a worn, aged or irregular look.

No attempt was done to make shingle caps, flashing or any other roofing material here.

The color controls vary the mix of the color of the shingles. Changing a single color control may not vary the effect very much, so play around for the final color combination you want. American asphalt shinges do come in various colors, but they tend to be very low-key, subdued. So, use the color controls sparingly, especially when going brighter

November 22, 2007
This is based on an experiment with a 'frame' component and a 'kaleidoscope' component combined with a 'refraction' component. This is a combination that others have used in various filters and I just wanted to see what else could be done with this combo. A little more has been added for variety, but the basics are those three components.

I'm not really sure what use some may put this to, but I found these enjoyable to view and hope you will as well.

Anti-aliasing is turned off in all of the presets, so you may wish to turn some back on for better smoothing.

And, like a lot of my pattern and artistic filters, I do not re-map the controls. This leaves the filter open to creating some real weird or undesirable results, but leaves more creativity within the filter. I prefer this trade-off in this type of filter.

It was designed around a photo by Danny Raphael, from RetouchPro.com. The photo was of a train tracks running through a woods during the fall, with all the leaves turning their brightly colored hues. Thus the name for this filter.

It may not work well with other images and photos. I've tested it on a couple others and seems to have some merit, so I'm releasing it as is.

The filter's primary components are high pass and refraction, with a twist of a tone curve and impulse curve thrown in for tinting.

I hope you enjoy it.

Curtains and Drapes 3k

October 12, 2007
This is a texture filter. It simulates hanging curtains, drapes and other fabrics.

This is a 'factory' or 'forge' filter. It is not a single effect type filter. The range of effects is similar to the original, but not exact. There are quite a few controls, but hopefully, these will be easy enough to use.

This is the third version of this filter. It does NOT update and override the earlier version. It is its own filter. This version strips out a number of things from the first. Gone is the frame component and so are a few other things. It's been simplified and streamlined a bit, but overall, gives a more consistent result with fewer oddballs results.

Randomizations will not be perfect every time. As a 'factory' type filter, this allows more creative control but allows also more room for error and non-optimal results.

Move the 'Pattern Shape' slider to zero to have no pattern at all.

The filter is great for images that are already somewhat pastel or light in color. It can produce some very nice tints.

I didn't try to limit the sliders too much, so, it's possible to get some bad settings. I wanted to leave some versatility in there.

It is a multiple effect filter. It requires a bit of study and use in order to get familiar with the controls. No care has been taken to make sure that the 'size, pixels' slider will work correctly. No care has been taken to make sure bump maps, normal maps or any other maps work correctly. Some care has been taken to try to make randomizations work well, but I guarantee nothing with that either. The only reason this is a surface filter is because I wanted to be able to use the various lighting environments with this filter. Therefore, height controls may not work well.

This is eseentially an art filter, a photo art filter. I use it to alter photographs and other images into something other than what it currently is for the purpose of aesthetic value. It may well not work very well on every imported image you try. It does work well on some. I'd suggest images larger than 600 pixels on any given side. Anti-aliasing is turned off on some of the presets.

This one took a while to get right. My thanks to Ahimsa, StevieJ and Foxxee for their help and feedback through all this! Oh, and thanks to Crapadilla for all his help on using noise components!

September 5, 2007
I've been studying Crapadilla's 'noise lab' thread in the 'filter creation' forum on FilterForge.com. This is a result of that study. This filter simulates a rock wall face, often granite looking. The range of this filter does or can fall a bit outside of that look, but mostly not and I didn't want to limit some looks by having to re-map some of the controls. I did re-map quite a few to keep the range within a rock look as best I could while still maintaining a wide range of choices.

The controls should be mostly self explanatory. The controls labeled 'shade' are modifiers to the main set of controls which don't contain that word.

It's a very simple filter but has a nice variety of looks. The power of this filter can be explained by reading that thread started by Crapadilla. Great piece of work there, Dilla!

Blood Stain 1f rev 1b

August 27, 2007
This filter simulates blood stains and splattering. You can use it with an imported image or without.

The 'Opaque - Transparent' control allows for the effect to be overlayed on another image or by itself with a transparent background.

You might also find this filter useful as a paint filter.

I've also added Crapadilla's suggested changes to this version. Thanks, Dilla. I also renamed 'Blood Stretch' to 'Blood Thinner'. And, I modified the texture leg to take advantage of Dilla's suggestions as well.

This will fix it. Use the sky controls to change that white sky to something more interesting.

The 'Blend to Land' control will smooth out the transition from sky to land and even tint the land when you want (like when things are very overcast).

This one does a bit of distortion and noise and may 'break' on non-square images due to the profile gradient.

I've also added a blur and a way to merge the effect with the original image, if desired.

In other words, there was 'the monster', then this snippet which came from there and which then went on to become 'the beast'.

There was some interest in the forums on Filterforge.com about the original snippet, so, I thought i'd release it. The only thing added to the original snippet are the controls and the levels component.

I didn't alter the control names in this one (much). I figure folks that use this one will also be folks that make filters and they would be more familiar with the actual names.

This one may take some practice to get exactly the effect you want. The presets were made with this in mind. Use them as a guide. And don't neglect the color control. This one can have profound effects.

(filters 'spawning' from 'the Monster' filter.

This one is more of a tone and shade filter. It's a very simple curves type filter. Basically, I was going for something a bit moody and dark, though it can do lighter as well. I also wanted some special lighting, maybe even some inverse lighting and some reflection lighting.

This one was again, a routine taken from 'The Monster', but this one was further enhanced by additions.

This filter alters color tones and relief or height.

the color tones are altered through the use of a hue/sat component and an impulse curve component.

The relief or height mapping is altered through desaturate, levels and gamma components.

These are spin-offs from my multi-filter, 'The Monster' (which is not released).

These filters are all image filters (using an image component) and a lot of them are noise filters. This one could probably also be classed as a noise fitler.

The original routine from 'the Monster' was modified for this filter. The original was much simpler and I've included it with the filter.

This filter works best with square sizes, but, I was able to make it work somewhat with non-square sizes. However, there are limitations with non-square. The bars may not line up proportionally within the frame when using the repeats. Hopefully, a later version of Filter Forge will correct this.

Use the 'opacity' control to add more or less of an imported image or just turn it down to 1 for all texture.

The 'translucency' control is for when you want no imported image, per se, but do want the 'paper' to be somewhat see-through.

The 'selector' switch simply changes the texture amongst various types.

More controls have been added and a colorizing ability has been added on also. This last part is optional with the checkbox.

The High Pass filtration makes for pretty good edge finding. You can definitely see some of that in this filter.

Controls with a numberal after their name indicate which selector position that control will work with. If there is no numberal after the name, then the control is global.

You can have the pole with or without a background image.

The pole may be moved side to side and you can alter the width to an extent.

The shading is also variable but may not show up well if you alter the orgiinal color setting of red.

And, you can rotate the pole. With a little bit of clever application, you could then animate the pole rotation.

The controls should be self-explanatory, for the most part.

I've also added uberzev's excellent 'any angle rotate' snippet here to be able to rotate the 'carpet' to any desired angle.

Use the 'texture density' control to alter the 'pile' of the carpet. This should also add or subtract the depth look of the texture.

The 'Offset kaleid' controls alter the pattern, not the global offset of the texture. Use the normal 'Offset' controls for that.

Also, one note on using the seamless tiling option. This will slightly alter the look of the texture pattern when turned on.

It was tested using primarily just one such photo.

There are 7 different "skin" effects which you combine using the opacity controls to create the look you want.

There is also a built-in masking feature, which you use with the "picker" controls at the bottom of the control list.

The masking cannot be exact due to certain current limitations but I got it as close as I could. Thus, you may need to take your finished image back into a paint program for more masking to allow features of your image to show.

The filter also borrowed other filters made by other folks. "Brain Jelly Cuisine" by Ionic69, "Exposed Flesh" by Joe Brandibas, "Alien Armor" by CFandM, and "Alien Egg Cluster" by RawArt, were all used in some manner.

No actual people or monsters were hurt or injured in the making of this filter.

June 4, 2007
This is a pattern filter. The presets mostly reminded me of items in a church, either a stained glass window, a fancy, inlaid floor, or a rich, luxurious carpet one might see in such a setting.

The repeat, and other controls, are marked according to 'channels'. Those channel markings correspond to the "Selector - Channels" control.

The presets were all designed to resemble or remind one of something in a church. However, the "size, pixels", "variation" and "Next Variant" sliders can easily break that effect, so use those with that in mind.

I have added back the refraction on this version. The presets are all set with anti-aliasing turned off for greater speed.

The "Selector - Final" slider alters the first selection to an inversion in the second slot and an alpha channel transparency in the third position.

Also note that non-square imported images will not render correctly. So, i've added an offset to help with this.

I had recently suggested to StevieJ that he try one of his filters in black and white. So, I thought I'd do the same.

This is also a filter based around one image; StevieJ's cup image, which he posted in the FilterForge forums. If you are ever lacking inspriation in making filters, take a single image from somewhere and build a filter around that one image. You can get some interesting results.

Originally, I also included a refraction component, but the rendering time got quite long, as much as four minutes in some cases. Also, the presets are all set with anti-aliasing turned off for greater speed. Simply turn that back on for smoother results but longer rendering time.

The "Selector - Final" slider alters the first selection to an inversion in the second slot and an alpha channel transparency in the third position.

Waterfalls 4a

May 21, 2007
This filter makes waterfalls, a variety of waterfalls. The controls are labeled for easy understanding. The background selector will let you switch between five different backgrounds. The fourth background uses a variation of Vladimir's "Crysta" filter. All controls except one should work with all backgrounds. The exception is the 'rocks repeat' control. This will only work with one background, the first.

This filter will 'break' if you use the "size, pixels" control on the bottom of the control list. Keep it slid all the way right. The "variations" button will work fine.

My thanks to StevieJ, CF&M, Persidio and voldemort for their encouragement and suggestions throughout the making of this filter.

Five Stroke Scratchy 1f

April 25, 2007
This is a 'Scratch' type filter. It creates scratches on an image. Or, with a bit of imagination, pencil marks. It uses 5 different angles for these.

This is a bit different from other scratch type filters in that it uses the original image to help create the scratches.

One caveat here; if you lessen all the opacity controls you will eventually turn the image partially transparent. This may or may not be desired. The way to prevent this is to keep at least one opacity at a high setting.

Color Range Extractor 1f

April 25, 2007
The idea is to be able to isolate a particular color or range of colors. There are three ways to do this in this filter, by hue, by lightness and by saturation.

Hue is the easiest and should be tried first. But, lightness probably works better when you want to isolate blacks and whites. Saturation I rarely use, but does have a use now and then.

Because what you want to isolate often has a similar color somewhere else in the picture, I've included a way to somewhat isolote geographically, just one given area. The controls for this are at the bottom of the control list. It's easiest when using these to turn the saturation selector and saturation range selector up so that you can see most of your image, isolate your area and then turn the saturation controls down again.

If you go into the editor, you can also see that I've included the base isolation routine, separate from the main filter, just in case you want to experiment.

It uses a great number of curve type components which can add or alter tone to an image.

It is intended to work with imported images or through a graphic editor as a plugin.

However, I also added some features to the end of the component tree to give it a more painted, brush stroke look.

The name of the filter came about from using the curve components from another, larger filter. This was sort of the 'trash' of that one :)

Use the 'Opaque Selector' to create opaque or transparent results.

It's purpose is to simulate exotic carpets and rugs.

Use the 'Import Image' control if you wish to load and use an imported image to make your patterns. I'd suggest using fairly strong colored imports with a lot of one color within. And in this version, only square imported images will work correctly.

This version also includes fringe and controls for same.

The corners are transparent on purpose. If you wish to save them as such, use .tiff or .png formats. .Jpg will not save transparencies.

And thanks to Uberzev for the basic fringe routine.

I basically ripped this segment out of one of my mega-multi- filters and made it its own filter. After tweaking it a bit and adding to it a bit, I'm releasing it to the library.

You can use this by itself or with an imported image. The imported image mode will use the import to form the kaleidescopic effect. So, different images will produce different effects with the same pre-set.

The selector at the top of the controls will completely alter the type of kaleidoscope created.

Using square imported images will give the effect in the same ratio as seen in the pre-set. using non-square imports may require using the offset controls to re-center things.

All of the controls should work with all the selector positions.

January 29, 2007
The idea behind this filter was to make a simple graphics editor with Filter Forge. This came out better than i expected and there is room yet for improvement.

The controls are laid out with the global controls coming first, followed by invidual groups of controls that can be switched on and off for the desired effects. Within both the global controls and the specials, each module type's controls are separated by a dashed line with a number at the end.

The special group of 'Alpha' types may be a bit difficult to understand. The idea behind these is to be able to mask off areas of your imported image based on the colors present in that image. This routine was borrowed from one of the other filter makers and then modified by myself to attempt to add a second control color for more refinement of the mask.

Feel free to modify and re-submit this filter. If you do, please choose another name than this one.

Curtains and Drapes 2

It simulates hanging curtains and drapes.

There is an optional feature at the bottom for adding Kaleidoscope patterns to the filter. The selector for this is just above those controls. In the first position you have the normal, no kaleidoscope mode. In the second position you get normal plus kaleidoscope in series. In the third position you have normal plus kaleidoscope blended into each other in parallel.

The optional kaleidoscope controls ONLY work when the selector is in the third position! The rest of the controls work all the time.

You can also simulate other effects, such as fabrics. Simply lessen the 'shape' and 'stretch' type controls.

Ignore the little checkboxes. They are only used to separate control groupings. So, it has no effect if they are checked or not.

January 9, 2007
This is another frame filter. The point of this filter is to make some non-mainstream type frames. It is somewhat inspired by CF & M's frames of late and I may have borrowed some of his code as well.

I've also borrowed Richard Bartlett's "Color Isolate" routine for one of my switch channels.

The controls are grouped by switch choice. So, if you move the selector to 1 you'll use the controls for that switch position. Thus, not all controls will be active at one time.

The group with 'g1' and 'g2' are global and will work with all switch postions.

The first set of distortion controls can alter faces on a fairly subtle basis. The 2nd set of distortions is for much wilder alterations. The 3rd set is set one and two in series with each other.

The offsets are mostly for re-positioning your image after wild distortions.

Selection position #1 and #2 are the 'finished' positions and work independently of each other. Position #3 is set #1 and set #2 in series and combines the two that way. #4 and #5 are just something I threw in as 'what if's'.

When using the Selector in position #3, use the #3 distortions for wild variations and the first set of distortion controls for fine tuning.

August 28, 2006
This filter was originally designed to show floods and underwater effects but has expanded into mists, snow, ice, toxic and other forms of gas and liquid.

This filter will not work as intended if your base image is rectangular and the horizontal sides are shorter than the vertical sides. This is a side effect of the seamless nature of Filter Forge.

Every control below "--MAIN SELECTOR--" is on a switch and will only work when "--MAIN SELECTOR--" is turned to that switch position.

It creates offsets of varying degrees to the fonts and allows a few other effects.

When using the offset controls the best results on text are generally around 48, plus or minus a few points.

Not all controls work with all Selector positions.

Sunsets V

July 10, 2006
This is a filter for altering the sky in landscape pictures, particularly for making sunsets within that sky. It relies on a variance between luminosity of the ground and the sky and will divide those areas within the filter and then alter mostly just the sky, with a smaller effect to bathe the land with the sky effect.

If adjusted correctly, it should also show the sky effect on water as a reflection.

Raise the refractions for a more blended look. Lower the 'Size, pixels' setting for a more banded look.

if and when more control components are added, I'll most likely update this filter.

It is used WITH an image imported into the filter.

The Perlin controls will only work when the main selector is in the #2 or #3 postion.
