Simplest Chainmaille

December 27, 2008, Editor's Pick
Simplest Chainmaille is a *very fast* rendering filter that creates a 4X chainmaille design. The controls are pretty self explanatory, and there are 20 presets included. Note - This filter uses the same basic offset tile and profgrad technique as Constantin Malkov's well known 'Chain Mail' filter. I figured out how to do a simpler 4X design before he updated his to also do that look, and mine is 2% different, so it may still be worthwhile to some users. But really, Constantin did chainmaille first with FF and the credit for 51%+ of this filter goes to him without a doubt. Note : Updated version changes = Changed the 'Low' control to read 'Ring Color', and removed the Height input threshold to correct the normal maps (thanks to Crapa for that suggestion).

Diamond Plate (Clean)

January 24, 2013
Diamond Plate (Clean) is a *very fast* rendering texture filter that does the typical 'diamond plate' style, only with rounded or ovalized -diamonds-. The controls are self explanatory, and 20 presets are included to show the range of looks that can be achieved. Note : V5 adds a "Depth Of Field" control for some subtle textural changes. Leaving it set to zero makes the filter behave and look exactly as it did before this update.

Hint = For the best look, keep the *Surface Height* set very low, under 3 seems to work best.

V2 : Added an *Angled* mode.

V3 : Morph between shiny metal styles, and muted plastic or rubber looks, with the *Metal - Plastic* slider control.

V4 : Added some distortion for (just) the diamonds via the *Normal-Damaged* slider control.

V5 adds a "Depth Of Field" control for some subtle textural changes.

The controls are all checkboxes for ease of use, and 20 presets are included to show the different looks. Hint = you might want to reduce the Size, pixels control down to 300 or less for best results on your own pictures. Enlarging the picture to at least 1200 X 1200 before applying the filter is a good idea too. V2 : Added *Dubbler* control. V3 : Added *Shift* mode. V4 : Added *Girder Mode*. V5 : Added *Chaostortion Amount* control.

The designs are all based on a spiral/twist look, and are pretty basic with only half a dozen controls. There are 20 presets to show you what all it can do, and hitting random usually works unless the color is too bright or dark (and the *Darker - Lighter* control is set too far in the same direction), then it looks washed out and you lose the *3-D* kind of look. And the *Dots - Rings* control only works in *Design Mode 2*, otherwise it is irrelevant.

Note that - this filter uses a snippet from one of Uberzev's filters posted in the User Gallery, as taken from a filter of Persid's. So credit to both of them, Uber for making the cool weave design, and Persid for the kaleid idea to warp it in her 'Celtic Knots' filter. Note : This V2 upd ate adds *Crisscross Mode* for some X/Y madness, and a *Thickness* control. To get the V1 look, always leave the *Thickness* control se t to 0.

Some of the designs are suited for floors/walkways, and some are more for shiny wallpaper type looks. It's a really simplistic filter overall, but it makes some nice designs, so I'm setting it free. There are 20 presets to show most of what it can do, and the controls are pretty obvious after a couple minutes of use. Note - V2 Update : Added *Rivet Designer* control and a few new presets. Note : V3 adds a *Brighten* control for shinier metal, and a *Straight Mode*, for some more conventional panel texture shapes.

This one is just kind of for fun, and is meant to simulate some really awful color correction attempts. Way off hues, bad lighting/contrast, almost glowing edges, it's all here. There are 3 Modes, 3 examples of each mode in vertical rows (hint = top to bottom in the preset rows). The controls are listed top-to-bottom, in the order that they affect your picture. NOTE : The presets were tweaked to get as much of the orange color back into the life preserver as possible, but this filter is very color sensitive, and will require some minor tweaking for you to color-match your pictures. Note: This V2 update makes a few internal changes, and adds a new mode (Tone Curve). The overall look has not changed, and 11 new presets have been made. The render time has not increased at all. Note : This V3 update adds a *Super Diffuser* control, and a *Noire Mode* control, to extend the range of looks.

There's not a ton to it really, but it seems like it could be useful for those quick close up/zoom in cropping jobs. ^_^ (Please note, your input picture needs to be square, ie = 500 pixels X 500 pixels, otherwise overlap/mirroring will occur.)

Hint = Turn down the *Stretch Amount* control to get more randomish (old style) swirls, and turn it up, to get blurry beaded curtain-ish looks. Note : This V4 update adds a *Mode Selector* control, which brings back some of the old looks as well as leaving the most recent looks, and adding a couple of combination looks. A few other internal changes were made, and the render time was made faster by about 20%-25%. Shout outs to "My Name Is Earl", cheap vodka, and Mad Raven *wink*. Another filter inspired by those cool old skool Amphisoft filters I always liked. Note: This V2 update adds a *Preserve Color* control, which when not checked, allows for a candy rainbow look. The results are grungy and smeared shapes and lines, of light/dark and color/black&white, along with some square or round rivet looking bits. Think abstrakt art I guess, it's easier to just try it out than explain it ultimately. Note : This V2 update adds a *Row Shift* control checkbox, to turn on some extra shiftular distortion, and supplies a slider control for both *Smoothing*, and *Surface Shine* (Formerly called *Double Blur*, and *Double Reflec/Metal*). *Noise Grad* controls names are now *Color Grad*, and a *Color Grad Range* slider control has been added. This filter remains 97% how it was looks-wise, and the render time has not changed. All presets have been adjusted to incorporate the new controls, and the lighting settings have also been adjusted for variety. Note: Reset the lighting to *Church* and 100/100/20 for the original lighting looks on all presets.

The idea is simple, a less harsh picture brightener. One control, just slide it up for more balanced brightness, ie : a setting of 0 = no change in your picture at all, and a setting of 100 = full balanced brightness. Note: V2 adds a *Compare* switch, so you can see what an equal amount of just plain old FF Brightness looks like. This is a quick & easy way for people to decide if they want to use this filter on their picture, or go with a normal albeit harsher lighting.

I added a hint of brightness/contrast via limited range slider control, so you can touch up the picture's overall darkness-lightness as the final stage before output (*Darken - Lighten* and *Contrast*, are at zero with a setting of 33.33. The controls are listed top-to-bottom, in the order that they affect your picture. Note: For this V2 update, I added seperate Contrast control, instead of having it tied to the Darken - Lighten (Brightness) control, and upped the amounts of the other controls, for slightly more range, and sharpness. Note: This V3 update adds the newer Blend module, and expands the ranges of the controls just a hair. This is a minor update, and does not increase the render time.

The controls are listed top-to-bottom, in the order that they affect your photo. 20 presets are provided just to get you started. Consider this filter at V2.5 upon release, since I already went back and added a new *Mode* control, *SmoothInside-Outside* control, and a *Post Sharpen* control, just to reign things back in a touch, since it's easy to overdo it getting that killer effect. :) Pre-Release V3 - Added : Check the *Soft Focus(Blur)Only* box to bypass the *Mode Switch*, *PreGamma Adjust*, *Darken-Lighten*, and *Contrast*, to avoid the light/color altering effects entirely

The cutout style can be changed from Average Color, to Color Blur, or Alpha, via 3-way switch slider. And the *BackGrnd - ForeGrnd* switch control allows you to select where the "batik" effect is, on the cutout shape (ForeGrnd), or on the background. Note - This V2 update adds a couple of new controls, and the choice of an alpha masking thinger background (yeah I still dunno what that's all about, but the kids seem to dig it ha-ha). New presets have been made, and the render time is still *very fast*.

July 11, 2007
Sci-Fi Chainmail is a *quick rendering* texture generating filter, that makes sci-fi looking chainmail type designs, as well as some "cyber razor wire" type designs too. The *Thick - Thin* control, and the *More - Less* control, are going to be the main sculpting tools here, while *Shape Mode* allows you to select a kaleidescope pattern that will determine the overall arrangement of your design, and the *Repeat H* and *Repeat V* controls will decide it's intricacy. This v2 update is a major reworking, adding several new controls, and expanding on this theme greatly. The render time has only been increased by maybe 5%-10%. V3 update just adds a switch to change from background being Black-Gray-White (and a slider control for that shading), to having the chainmail overlayed on top of your input picture.

This filter includes 20 presets to get you started, but you will probably have to do some fine tuning to really get it to look good with your pictures, just a friendly warning. :) The controls are listed top-to-bottom, in the order that they affect your picture.

The looks here are in the faded, simplified, neon, and posterized areas mostly. This filter is pretty simple, but the range limited controls are set up to give you maximum results with minimum effort. 20 presets are included to show you most of the range of the filter, and the controls are listed top-to-bottom, in the order that they affect your picture. This V2 update adds a few new controls, and please note that with *Brightness/Contrast* (a setting of 33.33 = 0/center on this control). Also, some subtle internal changes, add 3 fold to the variety of looks that can be achieved with this filter. The rendering time remains the same, very fast.

The Tone Curve controls (labelled TC) do the neon part, and simplifiying/posterizing, while the offset does the low-fi 3-D shift (Shadow 2X). At the end of the fx chain are 2 controls for the final Blend. The 9 presets will get you started, and the controls are top-to-bottom, in the order that they affect your picture. Note - This V2 update adds 2 new controls *Shadow Flip*, and *TC Mode*, and changes the *TC Invert Flip* mode internally to look a bit different/better. Also 6 new presets have been added, to show off the extended range of effects made possible by this update.

Color Philosophier 2 is based on the original Color Philosophier filter I made, but I added quite a few new tricks, and expanded it's functionality greatly, while removing some of the redundancy of the original, and only slowing the render time a little bit with the new features. The presets were all tweaked back to the original color/hue for the most part, to show the "usefulness" of this filter. Please note though - that All manner of other mixed colors is possible. *Post Hue Adjust*, is where you go to adjust/set the base color, right now, orange is set to be the base color on the presets. You will have to tweak the *Post Hue Adjust*, to set it to other colors to kind of match your pictures. :) The controls are listed top-to-bottom, in the order that they affect your picture.

Shape Warp 2 is 90% different inside, but the result is similar enough to my original SW filter, that I'm calling it a sequel. The controls are top-to-bottom in the order that they affect your picture. Have fun warping family photos :) Note : This V2 update is reworked internally in a big way, now there are fewer controls that do more, the output looks smoother, and the render time is a bit faster

This filter is just for fun, and pretty easy to tweak. Unlike most of my filters, the controls for this one, are listed top-to-bottom, in the order that they are applied to the picture. Hint = Lower the Surface Shine control, to get more shiny plastic/polished aluminum looks. Inspired by, and a tribute to - the old Toadies "Cyborg" filter for Photoshop, and all of StevieJ's recent FF filters focusing on metal and metallics. Long live the T-1000 ! Note : This V2 update adds some new grid related adjustment controls, and does not increase the render time at all. Also added 3 new presets. This V3 update adds a new *Grid Mode* shaping switch, removes a frame module that was not being used, does not increase the render time, and includes 3 new presets. Also, some control parameters were added/combined/modified slightly.

This one is really simple, you can control the color of the grid, the relative thickness of the grid lines, the number of horizontal & vertical lines in the grid, adjust the viewable screen size, and change the shading of the radar unit. That's it, happy simple radar grid making. This V2 update adds several new controls, and a *dot* to make the radar that much more umm, authentic ha-ha, while not increasing render time or changing the original look of the filter. The controls are top-to-bottom, in the order that they affect your picture. Note : Turning the *Edge Shine* on, can/will cause the grid lines and dot, to look just a bit dull/faded. There is no inbetween setting, because those seemed to make the washed out look very obvious, and bad.

Much like FSP, FSP 2 creates some embossed effects that range from flattened 3-D looks, to some more traditional looking "spray painted" embossed looks, along with some cool lighting shines. FSP 2 has been reworked almost entirely internally, while the output remains much like the original, more subtlety and detail is now possible with this sequel filter. In other words, if you liked the first one at all, you will like this one more even though it is a bit different. TC stands for Tone Curve on the controls, and the controls are top-to-bottom, in the order that they affect your picture.

This one is kind of complex to explain really, the controls are top-to-bottom in the order that they affect your input image, and there are 20 presets to get you going, or in case you do not wish to attempt to program this filter yourself. Note - Checking the *Threshold Flip* control, will make sure no uneffected "echoes" of your input image show up. The *Horizontal-Vertical* control, obviously, selects which direction you want the glass frames to go in. And there is a *Darken - Lighten* control at the end of the chain for you to rebalance your colors with, since Blend - Multiply was used internally to get the overlapping frames to look better. (This filter is dedicated to insects who need glasses, and warped filter master voldemort.)

Think space, think innerspace, think nu-age meets sci-fi. There's not much to be said about the controls, blend, shift, lighten, or flip-flop a couple of controls for variety. This one is just meant for abstract explorations. Embrace the subtlety. Note : This v2.0 update adds 2 new controls, *Color Smear Designer*, and *Vert Stretch Switch*, for more variations in output. The goal here was to create a kind of melting, or liquid looking effect on a kaleidescope filter. Depending on what the input picture is, and how you adjust the controls, you can go from metallic looking results, to more cartoon-ish abstract results. Pretty much every control will help you to creatively distort your original picture. Blendings from diamond to rectangle, and back and forth, with enough blur to smooth things over, and some blending switches to keep it all interesting and not so perfectly symmetrical and computerized looking. Note : This V2.0 update is a total reworking, and includes a gradient blend fix, about 1/2 as many compenents for 20%-30% faster rendering, and new features like, *Gradient Prof Mirror*, *Elev Grad Flip*, plus more.

January 12, 2007
RoboMelt is a *fast rendering* picture altering frame filter. Warp and deform family photos, and make dark or light shaded RoboMelt human sculptures inside a round or square frame. This one is really more about making cyborg looking people pictures than anything, you can get some warping going on if you want, but it's not really suited for too much of that. Also, the framing aspect is less traditional, and part of the melted image really. The controls are labelled pretty accurately, and with a little experimentation and tweaking you'll get what there is to get out of. Happy photo RoboMelting.

Metal Grating

January 9, 2007
Metal Grating is a texture generating filters that makes grate style patterns with various metallic looks to them. The controls are pretty simple, a couple of shaper controls, and horizontal and vertical controls for the number of sections in your grates. Try experimenting with lighting, since the images are often pretty dark, adjusting the lighting controls can bring out some very cool shadow, and high-lite effects. Note : V2 update changes. Preview render time optimized down to about 1/2 what it was. Several new controls added for extra damage effects, and some controls combined/renamed for further adjusting efficiency.

Flatland Spray Paint

December 29, 2006
This is a picture filter that falls somewhere between silver speckle embossing, and acidic pixel eating spraypaint. It's meant to give a silver flaked embossed look, and/or a sort of spraypaint melted look, combine the 2 at your own risk. Note - This is V2.0, with 3 added features, preserve color removed and set to always on, and new *Neon Foil Mode*. There are more varieties of effects possible now, and the render time is easily 25%-50% faster.

Black Light Tint

December 25, 2006
Black Light Tint is a picture effect filter, that attempts to imply a black light lense was used on the camera taking the picture originally. I don't know if there is such a thing, as a "black light lense" for a camera, I just liked the idea, and went ahead and made this filter. There's not much to the controls, 2 out of 3 times you hit random it's probably going to look alright, but you can lighten or darken it a bit several different ways, just to get the perfect amount of that violet colored black light glow to your whites. Note : The controls are no tin my usual alphabetical order, they are in order of how they are applied to your picture this time.

While many of the output graphics have some textural elements, it is more aimed at 2-D pattern generation. For best results, use pictures with both dark and light areas, and make small adjustments at a time. Now with a *doubler* effect, a Loom Shaper choice, and Loom Color choice (white or black) for the Loom lines.

The idea being that - adjusting the brightness/contrast at low levels, often brings out details almost as much as any "sharpening" effect can. Another idea explored is the blending of sharpening with contrasts, to attempt to achieve a more "natural" sharpening effect.
