Cross Weave

June 1, 2009, Editor's Pick
Cross weave texture.

Note: Brightness and color cast are controlled using the lighting controls in the HDRI section.
The appearance of the filter did not benefit from being a surface texture but I did leave the components for the bump map in case anyone needs it.

Very special thanks to Genie for giving the filter new direction, to Betis for getting it back on course and Craig as always for creative and technical advice. Very special thanks also to CFandM for the cute method this filter uses to control lighting.

Far better than v1. Use the old one only if you do not have v2. For increased reflections on the flappy end, increase the 'Surface Height' slider under the Lighting section.
Please check the comments section of v1 for examples of this effect.

The 'Evaluate Channels' checkbox and the 'Red/Green/Blue/Blend' slider together will display an R, G, or B channel or the current combination of channels that will be used to adjust contrast.
Channel values of 50 indicate that the channel has been unmodified. Moving the slider above or below this value will determine how much of that channel is used to make the contrast adjustment. 'Increase Contrast' and 'Increase Saturation' values of zero will result in the original image.

It allows for control of surface characteristics as well as the amount of tension applied to the corners. There is a separate control for refraction – set to zero will make the image look like it is behind a sheet of cellophane.
This filter has separate modes (checkbox) for square and non-square images. The square mode is much faster.

This filter allows an image to be resized and moved into new locations. With this filter an image can be decreased in size from normal size down to zero and increased from normal until a few pixels fill the entire screen. The image can also be move to any location.
Same as before but now with support for non-square images. This one is slower so use the other one if you do not need non-square support.

Light, shadows and color are added and controled using Filter Forge's HDRI lighting environment.
Moving the environment ball and selecting new environments controls what light will fall on the photo.
Most photos will look best with the Height slider set to maximum.
The Rotate Shadows slider is used to rotate the scene in the in the FF environment ball. At position 135 the scene will be up-side up and at 225 the scene will be up-side down.
Most photos will look best with the Height slider set to maximum.
Non-square images can be used by first changing the canvas size to square then cropping after the filter has been applied.

The controls are divided into spines or vertebrae. The area between the spines can be knocked out to background.

The structure of this filter is based on ssamm's beautiful 'Alien Ribs' filter – thank you ssamm.

Charcoal and Watercolor

July 25, 2007
This filter makes an image appear as if it is a charcoal and watercolor painting.
Color level will vary from image to image so it is a good idea to first find the color level of a given image before trying to set the other controls. Preset twenty has been configured to place all sliders in the left position except for color level which will be in the rightmost position. This slider should be moved to the left until the brightly colored parts of the image turn white – the rest of the image will remain intact. Next the ‘add pigment’ control should be used to add back the amount of color desired. Next the ‘color flow’ and ‘edge darkening’ controls should be set. As in reality these two effects are highly interactive so it will probably be necessary to try several settings of each. The ‘add color’ control can be used for stubborn images but will usually not be necessary. Now the hard part is over. The charcoal and canvas settings can be configured as desired.

Blur and High Pass Demonstration

July 16, 2007
This snippet demonstrates the interesting relationship blur has to high pass and how to use FF to easily convert between the two or substitute one for the other. This information can also be used to create filters that operate on slices of an image’s frequencies. The gamma and threshold components are there show the very small amount quantization error that will eventually lead to clipping. To use the snippet open it in the editor, move the radius slider back and forth and watch carefully how the components are affected. Notice also how the blend components are configured for removing the blur or high pass portions of the image.

Thanks to ByRo for his work in this area.

Fold and Tatter

July 16, 2007
This filter transforms an image into folded paper. It allows for the changing the depth of individual folds so each image can be unique. It also enable the user to age an image by adding crease and tatter detail. With the wrinkle control it will make an image look as if it not sitting flat and with the press control it will make an image look like it is folded then pressed under cellophane or glass. These features may be good for scrap booking, for example a love letter could be aged with tatter then pressed using the press control.
Column and row settings have been placed at the top because unless you have a certain type of fold they can be controlled with the variations button.
The surface height under the lighting section should be kept around one or two to for best results.
The first preset has a tiny bit of crease with some tatter.
Next the image is made to look older by increasing tatter and crease.
Next wrinkle was added to make the image look like it is not sitting flat.

June 26, 2007
This filter generates grunge. It allows you to add as much or as little grunge as you like, plus it has a grunge overlay for grungy grunge. Scan lines can be added to the grungy grunge making it even grungier. The grunge can be used on its own or the filter will abstract the edges of an image and grunge them up. The grunge comes in red, green, blue or black. The grunge and the grungy overlay can be scaled and varied independently. There are twelve base grunges with twelve grungy overlays. There are three modes; image, edges and paper - each can be used in any combination. The ink can be faded for the appearance of aging. There is a mode for border or vignette which can be tapered or faded to zero.

Reposition Rays

June 26, 2007
This snippet allows rays to be repositioned.
There are two sections; the upper section allows for the selection and modification of the various curve components in order to decide which would be most appropriate for your application or simply for generating ideas. This section was graciously designed and implemented by Kraellin and voldemort and demonstrates more uses than I would have thought possible. The lower section is the minimum that will be needed to be copied and pasted into your filter.
