You ask yourself, "What's new on the filter library these days?", and go onto Filter Forge's website, and as always, those 3 superb filters are always there... but you notice something different, a new one has appeared! Galaxy Explorer by Betis. AWESOME! You download it, and realize that your life has meant nothing until now, as you can now explore "new worlds", just by clicking one button! Of course you could always customize it to fulfil your most buzzing desires. Okay, you can stop imagining now, what a horrible alternate reality anyway, filters like that coming in the far future... when there's one right here!

Stargaze

December 25, 2012
Time and the sky are at the tip of your fingers.

Renders sharply and quickly at any resolution. (Although I would make sure you use brute force AA before making any final renders, the stars dont seem to take advantage of the smart AA)

To render non-square images, I recommend rendering a large square size, and cropping later. This filter doesn't register as "discrete" even though I tried to remove all non-discrete components.

If you are exploring this filter, you will see large or small disconnected trees. These are experiments or alternatives that I decided not to use, but feel free to play around with them!

Note: Works best on images with color, and a generally more square aspect ratio

Iterative Fluid Sim

June 13, 2012
I'm not entirely sure this is physically accurate or correct (and it certainly isn't volumetric), but I have noticed a lacking of "currents" in FF filters, and tried my hand at experimenting with them. In my Snowfall filter, I had volumetric snow that needed motion blur, and fr om that I taught myself a bit about currents/flow/fluids in terms of the physics simulating them.

Essentially it is broken down into a very simple function:
1. Things are wh ere they are (objects/position) [pixels]
2. There is something that moves them (a force/velocity) [offset]
3. Objects have a new position and are acted upon again (time passes/integration) [iterate]

Another thing more about this filter itself is that it's not meant to be a final product, or very fast. It's mostly a tech demo of something I discovered and would like to share as a "tech upgrade" to FF. I would love to hear discussions/improvements/uses come from this :)

HDR Export/Importer

March 15, 2011
If you've ever wanted to transfer HDR data to another filter, this is a way to do it.

For compression, it uses the formula x/sqrt(x^2+1) to squeeze any number fr om 0-∞ into 0-1.

For decompression, it uses the inverse function x/sqrt(1-x^2) to take any value from 0-1, and uncompress it into 0-∞.

The only lim itations are a pixel's data restriction for the RGB values to be 0-255, so really higher numbers will be less accurate.

The magic lies in exponents. for example, y = 2^x, where x is your desired change in exposure. You use the number that you got and multiply it by the image you wish to modify.

You can feel a chill slide down your spine, prickling your feet when it gets there. You take light cautious movements towards this earthen structure and ignite your torch, for you notice the cave is mystically dark. As more steps are taken forward, you feel less and less confident. The licking flames appear to be taunted by the chilling blackness. You feel you have made a grave decision by entering this esophagus of rock and are about to head back , but what's that? Orange. Out of the corner of your eye you see a tint of orange. Confident that it is not a trick of the mind, you investigate, and come to find that you have not been the only one inside this tunnel before. Swathed above you is... a giant lifesaver. You wake up panting, sweating, chilled. Your window has flung open sometime during the night... to subdue this recurring nightmare, there is only one solution:

I have seen some crumpled stuff out there, and checked to see how similar the guts were to this one before submitting it, and I think that's it's decently unsimilar.

September 3, 2009
And finally, a true carbon fiber filter has been escorted into the gallery. Add ridges, flip it around, and make your own types of colorful (or not) carbon fiber. This filter is also very simple (yet efficient) inside, and is hopefully easy to see what's going on.

Other Facts:
- Renders in less than a second!
- Size-slider friendly!
- Non-square image friendly!
- Totally Seamless!

More tolerance allows for colors closer to the target color to be accepted. Extra Saturation Contrast is hard to explain, sometimes you'll need it, sometimes you won't, just try it out on some pictures. Also, instead of getting one color to show, you can have it extracted instead, leaving all other colors normal, and that one just brightness, like in variation 6.

Random Offsets

May 18, 2009
How to offset an image based on variation and not on user input. More fancy GUIs too. Win.

GUI Explanation:
Top-left: Original Image
Top-right: Offset Image
Bottom-left: Vertical Offset
Bottom-right: Horizontal Offset

Also, if you notice, the color of the letters is not an invert! It is actually the offset complement. This means if you have 50% grey (or no offset), the complement is Black OR White (a full [looped] offset). If you have Black or White (full offset), the complement is grey (no final offset). I hope that makes sense, and if it doesn't, looking inside the snippet may help.

The frame is made out of cardboard, as mine is, but with "Frame Perfection" it just makes a perfect frame anyway... kinda lame though, but I thought people would want it. Right now, the light leaks are really bad, but if you get a good variation, they might be... adequate (A quick fix is just to turn it down to zero for now), those will be my next order of business.

Use it in Second Life, in Maya, or even as a background. (That's what I did for a little bit ;] )

All-in-all, it's just a good grass texture.

Note: Rocks, Dirt, and Flowers each add about a second and a half to render (on the Lifesaver 600x600 image) and base render time for default image is around 4.5 seconds.
