It's abstract, wild, and can take you far from the original looks of the image.

Voyager 3

March 31, 2010, Editor's Pick
This was originally one of the first filters I created in FilterForge beta 2.

The Voyager series has a long history (aside from the actual missions). The first version of Voyager was a heavy, bulky, randomizable beauty and somewhat a mess. I eventually released Voyager 2 and 2.5 which made things run faster, and I got rid of a ton of features which significantly made it easier to operate it. Finally here's Voyager 3. It's fast, super simple, and completely rebuilt from scratch.

It's updated with some modern HDR componenets, a bomber and everything needed to make it look at its best.

Voyager 2

April 13, 2009, Editor's Pick
Voyager 2 brings massive improvements to nebulae creation. Unlike Voyager 1, Voyager 2 sets a much clear and defined area where the nebulae will form. This makes it easier to expect certain forms and shapes as they appear.

Voyager 2 is much more simplified than its brother. It's got less controls and and rather a large focus on just simply variations. You can then take these elements and place them accordingly on your projects unlike having a big background splashed with random formations.

Voyager 2 will be updated with additional features as time goes on. Stay tuned.

Request filter from the FilterForge forums. You can cut render times significantly if you just render the diffuse map! Diffuse channel accessible by going into filter > render maps > diffuse. This will not have the full 3D effect but I designed the filter to compensate that by simulating depth.

September 14, 2012
An exploration into color, thought, and a process of viewing things in a different manner. Side to Side is part of a series diving into a personal interest in color harmony, complex imagery, and dynamic variation over the static. The filter uses nothing more than a simple square to generate a nexus of cascading geoemtries. The filter has been rigged carefully so you can hit the next-variation button and generate more results.

If this filter runs a bit slow, you can bypass some of the heavy post effects by pressing "boring mode." Additinally if you just view the diffuse channel, you can preview how the dots will be placed before the full render.

Also, "PlainColor Mode" enabels a image-less generation of the stained glass window with just the colors. Use "Absolute Colors" slide to restrict colors to what you picked, otherwise it'll produce varieties of colors. To get super fast renders, render only the diffuse pass.

These are then combined via multiple maximum and minimum nodes, ultimately both resulting in two passes one good for highlight emphasis, one good for shadow emphasis. You can balance between the two through the dark/bright slider to get your desired look. Note that this can also achieve sketch-like painterly effects when the contrast is cranked high enough.

March 15, 2011
Pattern Lab is the simplest / easiest thing to make patterns in. You take control or let the computer do the job.

Some descriptions for the controllers:
Color Variation: Scrambles through the "variation" on a noise gradient.

Shape Variation: Gives you bomber variations.

Square / Circle: When checked, the squares will be replaced with circles.

Denser Shapes: Adds more shapes to fill the background gap.

Different Symmetry: Alters the Kaledioscope mode from Rhombus to Triangle 2.

Variable Symmetry: This makes use of the Rotate node to make further variations on the Kaledioscope result itself.

Var. Sym. Incline... (mode): makes the rotation 45 degrees.

Chaos Mode: Sets Size / Rotation / H and V Chaos for more randomness.

This filter can easily output family photo color-balance disasters. It can simulate blurry lenses, vignetting due to cheap lenses. It simulates pretty much what you need to make the cleanest photo you have into something your family would have snapped during your trip to some tourist destination. Sit back and relax, the random botton can do your job or you can tweak the sliders.

Memeroid v2 is a complete overhaul update to the original Memeroid. Many improvements were made, including things that were previously not possible without slowing the filter down. With FilterForge 2 components, things became cleaner and easier to create.

Heavily inspired by Holga / Lomography, the filter can simulate blurry shots, color errors, vignetting, lightleaks, and even long term effects of UV rays on a photograph.

3.0 Adds various new features and improvments.

+ New color engine - Looks better than the previous.
+ Chromatic aberration - I had to add it.
+ Zoom Blurs and dynamic bluring (caused by cheap lenses)
+ Washout - Make your photos less colorful more worn out
+ Burn Even More - Adds a faint printing error common with pictures left outside.

Credits: Thanks to Uberzev for the zoomblur method. Simpler version using "Scale" has been placed.

Simple Scaling

April 16, 2010
This is a small snipplet showing how you can scale an item without having all the tiling / mirroring images.

The snipplet achieves this by cropping away the surrounding area.

Some tricks on scaling
If you want to remap the values, say a scale from 0.5 to 1 you need to keep in mind the ratio so that each remap is affected accordingly. So a 0.5 to 1 would be a 1:2 ratio. Make sure you reflect this on the remap anywhere this goes, otherwise it may give you undesired effects.

I personally put the XY Anchor on Image Bounds only to accomidate for various image sizes. This does not mean you have to do this. It's just nice because if you're affect the image directly, you probably want the center(0.5 , 0.5) of the image to scale from or to.

April 16, 2010
Colors v1 is a small utility I made for design purposes. This utility allows you to make color schemes from any image you feed it. The idea is to get harmonic colors from this so you can use it in your designs. Not only Colors picks colors, it lets you see harmonic relations of various colors. Colors can help you choose the right colors.

Notes on some features:
X / Y / Combo - These are where color schemer will look colors for. Combo is (x, y) coordinates but I also added a twist which lets you pass it through some math operators for additiona interests. The modes you can pass them through are: Multiply, Divide, and Add.

Darkness Graph - This displays a simple bar graph based on luminance values. Well sort of. The darker the color, the higher the value. This is more of a gimmick and not meant to be scientifically accurate.

Image Tag - This displays a small "tag" that lets you see the original image where the colors came from. It's just a reminder

Returning Nature

August 12, 2009
Simulates moss growth on objects. Works especially well with urban landscapes. Turn your city into ruins in a matter of seconds.

Tips on Usage:
+ Use this as your basis for a matte painting. Add some bushes, trees, grass. This filter was made for landscapes after all, not just on a flat surface.

+ The Details slider can make the moss look fuzzy and more spread out, use it wisely.

+ If you get moss in the sky, tweak the "Moss Placement" slider or you can mask that area out in Photoshop. Remember, it's not always perfect, but it will do it's best.

Version Notes:
- For interst, there are pink "notes" hanging around in the filter editor. These are just there for you so you can understand what's going on with each step.

- Thanks to Betis on how to apply lighting to the moss!

The filter takes your image and exports it out into several colors, and then uses fractal patterns to distort them into other-worldly art. It's fun, simple, but very effective if you know your colors.

This edition of hive extends the filter by adding additional maps for interest.

Additionally, this filter is extreme. It is not subtle as you may think.

Try pressing the randomize button. It can get you interesting results.

July 20, 2009
Previously "Countries" had wonderful capabilities to generate maps easily for whatever purpose you had. Unfortunately, it couldn't generate "good looking" countries. It simply made ugly looking landscapes which I was horrified at.

And after days of reconstruction and re-consideration Countries 2 is here! It's faster (almost 2.5 times faster), looks better, and most wonderfully you can press the variations button without getting ugly stuff!

Rolly Rolly Color Stamp

July 1, 2009
Guranteed to make children happy. The Rolly Rolly Color Stamp makes your images into colorful, dream-like artwork with glitter!

This filter was actually made for a friend of mine who wanted colorful backgrounds of urban landscapes. Indeed, this filter actually makes the Tokyo cityscape look unexpectedly quite cool.

Notes: "Smooth" kinda ruins the image with a bit too much gray. I frankly don't know how to solve this yet but I will eventually.

This version takes images and makes them into nebulae forms. You can consequently paint nebulae formations and obtain nebulae that way.

So you basically have the freedom to make up any shape, and you can let the computer do the drawing.

The frame will work with all image sizes, but obviously best if used with a cropped square image.

I felt a need for making a procedural Polaroid filter+frame.

by Skybase

Creates detailed nebulae formations.

Current issues:
- Slow! Needs optimization.

Planned:
- More realisim. (Requires complete remake of filter)
- More scale control. (Prototyped - needs work)
- Control over stars. (Testing)
- More control over color. (Working on it)
- Create nebulae forms out of photographs. (low priority)

Credits:
Thanks to tigerAspect for the star snipplet idea. It's been modified quite a bit but the idea comes from tigerAspect.

---Side Note---
Deisgned originally for one of my print series for a gallery / book but I thought it'd be nice to have it in the library. Gets quite entertaining when applied to city scapes.
