Very interesting. I'm just not sure I like the resulting color -- I'd prefer to have an optional way to leave the original brightness/levels/contrast etc unchanged. I'm afraid with the current scheme this may be hard to implement -- you'll need to get rid of all those chained Levels/HueSat components in the middle of the filter.

And I think you can easily get rid of at least one Blur component -- see the pic. You're using it to soften the border between the areas of diagonal brush strokes. This can be easily achieved via the Smooth parameter of the Threshold component.

i wasnt sure from the presets if i would like this one or not. often, i can tell pretty well about a filter from looking at nothing more than those. this one, i had to call up the program, get the filter from the downloads and play with it a bit. frankly, i'd change some of those presets. they dont show this off well enough... too much blur in those. so, bottom line, i like the filter, but not the presets.

i played around with my rose picture. the controls are well labeled, so no big learning curve there. so, that's a plus. it has a variety of effects, also good. too much blurring for my tastes, but that's pretty subjective, so no points subtracted for that. (you didnt realize i was grading this, did you Smile ). so, all in all, a nice addition to the creative category Smile

Vladimir,

I see what you mean about the dynamic range. I was never happy with how the tones were coming out, though I thought the Levels component was the best shot. Then, after reading your comments, I went back and found that I had a tone curve that was dragging everything down. I started this filter a long time ago and just picked it up again recently, and I was so busy trying to get the brushstrokes right that I missed that tone curve. I don't even know why I included it in the first place! @_@

I also found a dead-end sub-tree, which I also excised. I am a goober. Blush

Regarding the blur vs. threshold smooth: I actually used threshold smooth originally, but it introduced some strange artifacts at the borders of the shapes, so I went with the blur.

you have to include some text in the thread or the image wont post. images must be 250k or less and they must be one of the accepted formats, like .jpg, .bmp and so on.

StevieJ: Yup! I'm still here. Though I seem to have gotten a little rusty... Confused

Kraellin: The presets were difficult for this filter. I had several photographs I was using to give examples of what the filter could do, so I was optimising to presets for them as well as for the anchor. I'm sorry they didn't seem to give you a good impression right off. Sad

I hope to get my examples up in this thread, but they don't seem to be showing up right now (just the html), so I'll try again later. It's obvious one CAN put in pix, 'cause there's your rose!

oh, and one other reason images wont post is, you cant use the same text over and over again in any given thread. the anti-spam thing will kick in and disallow the post.

normally, the biggest reason for images not posting is file size. MUST be 250k or less.

Um, well, not sure how I ran into anti-spam guards, but it seems to be working now. Question

Vladimir: here are examples of the difference between using blur after multiblend and using threshold smooth beforehand.

ah, dont use the 'image' button. go down to the bottom and use 'attach a file', then browse to your image in your folders and click on the one you want.

Sigh.

Thanks, kraellin. ^_^ It's been so long since I've been here, that i've forgotten the difference between my *ss and a hole in the ground. Blush

Well, on that (calmer) note, here's an example of the filter using preset 4:

NOTE: all these images are copyright Kat Strieby (me!), both the the original photos (exept for preset 9, which is from a photo my husband took of me) and the "artistic" results. Big grin

Yep, looks like Blur is appropriate here.

I have the feeling that the last default preset was more 'marketable'. Wink Big grin

I agree -- please bring the old one back.

However, I like the color of the new one better. It would be great to make a new default preset that combines the strokes of the old preset, and colors of the current one.

Um, does anyone have one of my earlier versions? I can't remmeber what the last preset looked like, and, of course, I've updated over everything. Crying Man, my goober factor has been WAY up this week...

If anyone has a copy of the earlier filter, could s/he do a quick render of the last preset and post it here? Once I see it again, I'm sure I could re-create it. ^_^

Thanks for all the help on this one, folks! Big grin

The current variation 6 comes pretty close to the original default preset, IIRC.
