ooh, very nicely done! that first preset is wonderful. my only suggestion would be to add a slight blur to remove some of the sharper details before applying the effect, it's be more realistic. | |||

Thanks, folks! This was an accident that happened while I was working on "Painterly Effects."
Well, if you move the "soften image" slider to the right, the edges are a bit blurred. Is this what you meant? If so, do you think I ought to have allowed a greater range of softness? If not, well...what did you mean?
Here's an image with the edges softer: ![]() Kat

This version has more detail, but I think it looks good in black and white, too. ![]() Kat

sorry 'bout the confusion i was a bit too hasty to post, i looked over the controls and couldn't find a blur component, but as you point out, there is one. it's just right |

hi kat,
always looking for painterly effects and this one is pretty cool. i've got one bug-a-boo with it, however. your stroke changes are pretty angular. i looked inside the filter and added one component to try to reduce this just a bit. right after the blend you use to get the 'crosshatch amount', i added a noise distortion and turned the distornion way down to 10. this puts some curvature to the brush strokes... just a bit to get away from that sort of mathematical, computer made 'brush stroke' effect as opposed to the painter's hand. but, regardless of those changes, i do like this and have marked it in my favorites. If wishes were horses... there'd be a whole lot of horse crap to clean up!

I know what you mean about the precision of the strokes. When I was first building this, I put in a noise distortion component -- somewhere -- but didn't like the results, so I took it out. After reading your comments, though, I went back and put it where you said you did and limited the values, and now I like it a lot. THANKS! I did find that that longer strokes tended to look "better" when the distortion was low, but that shorter ones could take higher values, so I added a slider to that component so the user could decide. Thanks again, dahling! Oh, garbanzo? I increased the upper limit of "Image Softness," so now you can have even softer sketches if you like (though of course you can still keep it pretty subtle). Kat

Thanks, Anomaly! I'm glad you like it!
I see you don't have any filters listed -- will you be creating some for us, or are you more of an end-user? Regardless, welcome to our little party! Kat
