The HDRI stuff is great for photorealism but sometimes you just want something basic such as a simple directional light.

The code for Phong-based point lighting (infinitely distant light sources) along with HDRI lights, specular, Fresnel reflection approximation and so on with infinite number of lights is in the code for almost a year There's just no UI code for that. Currently, the only way to create point lights is through editing filter files manually (you'll need to know the format spec).
So, you should ask Vladimir:
1. To implement point lighting editing UI (I seriously doubt that it will make in 1.0 though).
2. To provide you with the info (the format itself is pretty straightforward), I can describe it in a few lines. |

Yes, the current version of FF already has the code for multiple point lights. The problem, as usual, is me -- I'm simply too busy with high-priority stuff to spend 2 weeks or so to design a good UI for this. As onyX said, it's unlikely that this feature will make it into the current version. |

Ideally this feature would have all its variables node-able as apposed to the current design which leaves some out such as surface height. |

Surface Height is simply a multiplier to the Height input, and you can control the Height with components. |

Lights would be interesting i think, if you could set the color and strength and that type of thing, i imagine they could be used for some interesting multicolored abstract type textures |
