Why do I get a 'The pipe has been ended' or a 'Remote writing not started for data exchange' error message?

Most probably the error occurred because you ended Photoshop in Task Manager when Filter Forge was running as a plugin. If this is the case, just don't do it again and everything'll be ok :-)

If Photoshop is "Not Responding" in Applications, this doesn't necessarily mean it froze - this can mean it's doing so hard a job rendering the filter that it cannot even respond. Generally, in cases like this, when you think Filter Forge has frozen, it's better to terminate Filter Forge, not Photoshop -- at least you won't have the error message and won't lose your work in Photoshop.

I want to work with Filter Forge on a computer without access to the Internet. However, I would like to work with library filters

After you download the library filters you can copy the contents of the following folder to a removable or a Flash drive:

For Windows:
%APPDATA%\Filter Forge\System\
(by default it is C:\Documents and Settings\YourUserName\Application Data\Filter Forge\System)

For Mac OS:
~/Library/Application Support/Filter Forge/System/

Copy this folder from the removable drive to the same location on the other machine.

Where are 'My filters' located physically? How can I copy my filters to another computer?

The path is as follows: %APPDATA%\Filter Forge\My Filters
(by default it is C:\Documents and Settings\YourUserName\Application Data\Filter Forge\My Filters)

To quickly get to the folder containing the filter files, select any filter and press Ctrl+L (or choose Filter > Locate File from the menu). This will open an Explorer window showing the location.

You can copy this folder to the same location on the other machine.

For Mac OS X:

  • FilterForge 1: ~/Library/Application Support/Filter Forge/My Filters
  • FilterForge 2: ~/Library/Application Support/Filter Forge 2/My Filters

How to save the rendered image with a custom resolution that I want?

Use the File > New Image menu command before rendering, it lets you choose any output resolution up to 65536 x 65536 pixels in the Professional version and up to 3000x3000 in the Basic and Standard versions.

You say that everyone can contribute to the filter library. Where on the website can I submit my filter?

Filters are submitted from your copy of Filter Forge, not via the website. To submit a filter, do the following: 1. In your copy of Filter Forge, open the main window and select the filter you want to submit. 2. Go to the main menu and choose Filter > Submit to Library. This will open the Submit Wizard which will guide you through the submission process.

How do I apply filters to separate layers in Photoshop?

Applying filters to separate layers is not possible because Photoshop SDK 6.0 which is used in Filter Forge doesn't provide access to specific layers. We don't want to switch to the later versions of the SDK because that would make Filter Forge incompatible with non-Adobe applications like PSP or PhotoPaint.

I've got a brand new version of PSE/Corel Photo-Paint/another graphic app only to find that Filter Forge doesn't work as a plugin

There is a workaround to make Filter Forge work as a plugin with an unsupported host application.

Under Windows:

For the hosts that are not officially supported by Filter Forge, you can simply copy the entire \Program Files\Filter Forge\Plugin folder to the plugin location of that host.

Under Mac:

- make sure that Filter Forge or your host app is not running;
- copy the entire 'Filter Forge 2' folder from Applications to Applications/Photoshop/Plugins/Filters or to the Plugins/Filters folder of your host;
- delete the filterforge2-ppc.plugin file if you've got an Intel-based Mac (if you have a PPC Mac, skip this step).
- run your host. Filter Forge should show up in the Filters menu.

Since we test Filter Forge under officially supported hosts only, we can't guarantee that it will work on unsupported hosts.

Licensing and copyright questions

You can use the Filter Library filters for commercial or non-commercial purposes as long as you don't violate the law or someone else's rights.

It is ok to modify other filters to your convenience. If someone's snippet or filter inspired you to create your own filter, it is considered polite to mention the author of the original idea in your filter info.

A filter seems to have disappeared completely?!

When a filter which you downloaded earlier is removed from the Library, Filter Forge "disconnects" it from the Library and moves it to the "My Filters" category.
