Your unpowered SSD is a ticking time bomb

Your data and your files and work you do with your computer is very important, valuable and worthy and it would be a great big loss if it gets corrupted and you loose it

So I wish you never loose any data so I want to help and give a warning here for you to be safe and avoid any possible problems

I have just found this very interesting and useful article that goes against what many people may think and believe that SSD hard drives are safer and better than mechanical hard drive for cold storage and backup

I have always believed that storing and keeping data in a SSD hard drive, or using external SSD drives would be much better and much safer than using an external mechanical hard drive, but according to this research above this seems to be totally wrong

So please, I would advise and recommend that you may read this and be aware of not keeping your SSD without use for much time as they would become maybe useless and would be a real big pity that you find you have lost your most precious and valuable data and files and all your hard work

And as it being said is not also recommended to make just one only backup because it could also fail and then you lost it

Wish you all the best and that you can continue many years without problems with your hard drives either SSD or mechanical

Inspirational ideas with images and videos for creating filters in FF

I have thought to put here a thread to make a collection of images or videos that could have some inspirational ideas for things that could be made possibly in FF in some way

For example, one image maybe for me can inspire one thing, and for you could inspire a different thing that could bring other possible ideas alternatives

I start with this Video showing some geometric color shapes with checkers and stripes

I think that the Memphis style patterns and shapes can be used with.FF as they can give some cool and interesting things and I think that it will not be very difficult to make Memphis style shapes inside FF

I do not have all the expert knowledge that others may have but will try to make it and see what I can do

Great results you have done, and also that you like the idea, and below is the filter so you can see where I have reached until now

Sorry I did not have shown what I had got already before but here is my own version that is seems that is different in some way to your own.

There is still no star in the center as you have done.

Also I wanted to make possible that the internal star could have another optional color but have not done it yet.

I have also made some alternative tests, that you can see in the filter, but do not like much the results.

I did not use any loop, just using basic shapes with scale,rotate and offset

I only had to buy a new Wacom tablet as well, as Wacom is not very friendly in updating drivers for older products and I cannot run Painter on my older Mac mini.
Luckily I just found a good priced used tablet. So all is well :-)

An even weirder problem. I also have this SSE 4.2 isssue, HOWEVER, my processor shows as having it, as demonstrated by the system information in Photoshop 2020. Yes, it's an old AMD Phenom, but it should work in PS 2021 and beyond, but I can't go beyond this version, apparently. I, too, get that error mentioned above when I try to update my version. This version, however, works fine. Is it possible that it actually SHOULD work fine, but, for some reason, my processor isn't on the approved list? Is that the reason, a mistake by Adobe when they made up the approved processor list? So, what's the real reason for the error, Adobe?

Here in Spain the mother´s day is always the first sunday of may.

This year here, the first sunday was the 1st of May that is the international workers day, so I thought that it should be celebrated also as the working mother day, as many woman have work at home and also outside to be able to bring food to her family. It is a pity that many times the husband should be helping the mother that works outside with the things inside home, but do not happen as often as it should to help her having a better life.

I just tested again in PSP 2021 64 bit version and it was fine. I can't check in PSP 2021 32 bit version at present but presume it would be ok in it as it works in PSPX, which is 32 bit.

Do you know if it is possible to install two different versions of Corel PaintShop Pro and Corel Painter in the same computer?
I already have the 2020 version, that I'm accustomed to use. Then I would like to install also the 2021 version without deleting or overwriting the old version. But I don't know it is possible or not.
I asked to Corel support, but they didn't answer.

Yes, that is fine for PSP, Ramlyn. Most PSP users seem to always have multiple versions installed. I always have at least 3. At present I have PSPX, PSP2019 and PSP2021 installed. I keep an older version installed as they get the best upgrade offers when Corel discounts come around, plus one can't have open 32 bit and 64 bit at the same time of the same version. I always work in 64 bit but if I want to use an old 32 bit filter then I open the 32 bit version from the older PSP so I can have both open at the same time. They do install in separate folders inside Corel folder in Program Files and Program Files (x86) and a new set of users folders are set up for each version in My Documents/Corel PaintShop Pro.

Sorry that this tutorial is only for Photoshop and this means that needs the subscription (although there is a cheaper choice in the subscription for the Photographers plan for 10$ or 12€ per month)

As you may know already that to modify the colors of any image or photo may be easy or not depending of the source you are using, for example changing a WHITE or BLACK color to any other is NOT easy to do usually, but here is the help to make it easy for you and possible.

Although Filter Forge (FF) allows to modify the colors of the result of any filter using the Hue component, this may be very limited and do not give the result you may want and so here I suggest that you may export and save the FF result and open it in Photoshop and then after change the colors, and here are some tutorials that may probably help you.

Maybe you may have a beautiful image created in FF from any filter, but trying to change some of the color, specially white or black, is not as easy as you may want.

For example, you may have a photo of someone with a white shirt and you want to change it to another color so here are some tutorials to help you do it in Photoshop

METHOD 1 - FASTEST ONE

I like how she is using organic artistic painting to create and simulate big flowers

Here is one example of the many available in the link above

I think that maybe something like this could be done using Filter Forge in some way using Kaleidoscope or some of the Rachel Duim flowers filter modified.

She is able to do a great artistic work with very much detail and great composition and combine the colors great

Here are some examples from me, just painted in VERVE:

Some things are very cool done, e.g. the fluidity engine and the possibility to paint bump, so you can made an very nice 3D Effect.

But there are one problem with ANTIVIRUS-SOFTWARE, e.g. Avast didn't have trust to verve.exe, but believe me, this software/forum is clean.

The one intense thing to note about this software is that it's entirely written on GPU. The GUI and everything isn't bitmap based, it's very very resourceful which leads to the incredible file size!!

Installation? Verve runs without installation, but maybe you have with a newer version more luck, the owner of this this programm mades regulary improvements and new bugfixes ;) ... sometimes 3-4 times in a week ;)

Now some months later - that program did replace artrage mostly and here are some new examples from me

painted in VERVE only, the explosion looks so real, but its painted 8) - its also good for painting textures (ooops) .... ;)

Oh, I didn't say that? That sweet paint app is Freeware and yes, you need a god GPU - its also a dynamic fluid simulation. 8)

I agree that Humble Bundle is a great website. I've been purchasing from there for years and have never had a problem. This is the 3rd year that Corel has had a large bundle on there. Actually, based on given definition my workflow mostly encompasses procedural means of getting stuff working. I kinda do generative stuff when needed. I'm currently switching my 3D workflow fr om Maya to Houdini and SoftImage since they're both procedural / generative software workflows. It's super technical, super physics based, but super robust and I'd rather know Houdini than anything else.

I do a ton of 2D work on the side of 3D stuff too. This is wh ere it gets procedural-generative-ish. I use Synthetik StudioArtist 4 for that. Pretty awesome painting tool. It's partially based off of intelligent algorithms for painting images and can synthetically generate images as well. Can be applied to video and pretty much does more than enough. Insane piece of art program. You'd love it: http://www.synthetik.com/ and the user group: http://studioartist.ning.com/ Most of my background work for my thesis film utilizes Studio Artist because it's amazing.

I also do real-time interactive art. Most of that stuff runs on GPU which is awesome. I work generally on Quartz Composer for real time stuff. Sometimes realtime visuals have to be accompanied by music, so I lately produce custom instruments with Reaktor. So actors or audience members can interact with the music via OSC or Midi controls as well as the visuals.

Generative... procedural... kinda in between. I generally don't code. I kinda do scripting once every now and then. But there you go... a bit of long but brief overview of generative / procedural stuff I do.

Other art software / toys I use for fun and sometimes design work: U&I Software Artmatic (and Artmatic Voyager), Metasynth, ContextFree, Node Box, Structure Synth, UltraFractal

Well, looking at the code and do not understand it at all, and considering that I do not have any kind of coding or scripting experience I do not know if I I could be able to learn it, but surely will try and see what I can do, I thought I could not make filters for FF, and then I learnt to do it, at least a beginning of it.

Also this sources codes above are not complete in the way that is fully to be used, as they do not have any kind of ready made output, I mean to save the result or other things (this must be added later to the code), and also many of the two first websites have COMBINED sourced codes that I do not know how to use and make it and will have to see how to combine them.

Glad that you find it very interesting Ramlyn, there are LOTS of different examples and many websites about this computer generated artworks and there really many very cool, awesome and stunnings works done, regretably I do not know nothing about programming and coding so I canÂ´t test them, as they are mostly based on programming as they do not have any kind of visual interface.

I would really love to be able to use the very interesting Processing language, but after downloaded and trying to use and learn it, I could not do it, and then I did not have more time to test it, and as it was somewhat frustrating for me being a non programmer I did not continue :(

Many of the complexification website example has an applet to make your own, BUT they are very low resolution to be useful.

The one I really LOVE much is the Substrate Applet is the most beautiful one with such a very complex and great texture graphics it can make

You'd seriously love nodebox. The output can be vector and it's easier to use than a lot of the others out there. Very enjoyable. Follow some tutorials and you'll get the logic. Program doesn't complicate over traditional programming at all.

Been making stuff using Nodebox because it can do quite a number of things.

Plus I hate typing out attributes of a single object.

Nodebox really does help with a ton of little things I do here. I kinda figured I'd use it for data visualization and it's helped to just deal with the design of it rather than making fancy code which I kinda get caught up in.

Data visualization aside, here's some clock generator I made.

Note that everything is pretty much procedural, so for each random seed, a new clock can be generated instantly based on several designs internally fixed. It's a quick little way of getting a ton of stuff out without making a single thing.

OpenGL version is basically nodebox 1 plus the graphics library, it's intended to expand capabilities of Nodebox 1 and it's not intended for everyone. Nodebox3 is more graphical of an interface, I think it's easier to understand what's going on and ultimately might get you somewhere.

I donno call whatever, but I think people aren't allergic to stuff, more like don't have any foundational knowledge to kickstart a chain of ideas. I just feel like people let their fear of "I don't know what I'm doing" feelings override their ability to learn something. It's not anyone's fault that they're doing that. I think it's just natural to fear the unknown. Just that some people like to hop over the fence to see what's up on the other side.

I also think that using somebody else's stuff to make your own things is a fantastic idea. While you probably won't be as original as you'd want to be, I still think it's a safe passage to start adventures in.

And if you really got no time due to all sorts of reasons, well there's always the "having fun with what's already available". There are tons of cool tools out already.

You know, another way of thinking "generative" is to go back to its roots of definition. When we're defining generative art, we're often associating it with the idea of "generating" something. This means that you're as much in control, but you pass off the control to some other entity that behaves in a certain manner while introducing unexpected results. In short, generative art is created by an autonomous system with predefined parameters.

By definition you're surrounded by those kinds of systems. For example, people would drip paint across a canvas letting gravity take hold of those paint droplets forming new shapes. When you add water to acrylic paint, it'll create interesting swirling patterns. You can even hook up markers to a tree and let the tree sway in the wind while it scribbles all over a piece of paper (that's been done before by some artist. Forgot his name.)

So you really don't need to know programming to do this. Although it'll help, it's not required. Get imaginative and see things from a different perspective and definitely try things. ;)

Black Ink is definitely a tool of interest. On the side with stuff like this, there are tons of nice alternatives everywhere on the market. Most of them are obscured by the mainstream market interest for "gestural natural mediums".

I have tried it and is really different to others software I have seen and the way it works, and how you can configure things, and how you paint, and the brushes are also better to others ones.

The Node based editor is clearly VERY different fr om filter forge, there are NO links between components, they are all glued together, and there is about 8 result components wh ere the components are attached and they work all together for the final result, and the node components itself are also very different from the ones available in FF.

What is very good that you have layers, and also can paint live with different pressure and different blend modes and modify the brushes in many ways that is not possible in others softwares I have seen.

Just had a quick test, so will have to see more.

I think this is much more than it seems and it has a much greater potential, and you can do many possible things because you can build your own brushes in many possible ways and customize it with the many available node components.

What I have discovered now is that this are NOT at all traditional brushes as it happens with Corel Painter, Photoshop, or any other digital painting software, as it is much more than that, and you can even use image based sources to pick up the colors and shapes and paint with that and build your brush with this. This can be seen how is done in this video shown here below

NOT FIXED TO THE CANVAS SIZE FOR PAINTING

Also something that is seen in the above video and is curious, useful and not available in any other software I have seen, is that the available workspace, is like if you are having a virtual table where the canvas is put and then you can paint all over the table without any care, and only the parts that fall inside the canvas will be kept. All the other software I know only allows you to paint and works ONLY inside the limits of the canvas, and not outside of it.

I mean I don't plan on hitching it but I would be happy to see a version for all systems really. Like all artsy software it'd be nice to have it on all platforms so I can hop around from one system to another without changing software to do something different.

It's basically like how StudioArtist became also for Windows. It just means I have a chance to own two copies, use two different systems and get the same result.

Blend Modes are available here in Filter Forge, in Photoshop, Affinity photo, in many other 2D and 3D software and is also used in scripting and coding (see the third link below) and they work all in the same way independently of the software used as far as I know, so it does not matter if you do not have Photoshop, you at least have FF

Blend Modes are really a very powerful tool to mix and merge images with very interesting results and depending on how you use them you can get very artistic things, or use them as adjustments, or to sharpen or modify colors, etc.

In FF instead of layers you have the Blend mode component that will mix two sources with the selected blend mode, and you can use if wanted multiple blend modes components combined or inside bomber with multiple sources

As regrettably FF still does not have any drop down menu for choosing blend modes so the workaround I have found is to have this printed list with the number and blend mode reference for you to download and print shown here below

Maybe you may be thinking in the normal and most used way of Blend Modes used with 100% opacity and 100% Fill that is mostly how is used in Filter Forge and many of the video tutorials, BUT is important to remember that at least in Photoshop and other software you have the ability to modify how much the Blend mode is shown with the Opacity or Fill

I use Affinity a bit (WIn10 64) . Mostly Designer/Publisher for newsletters, posters.... but I do find Affinity Photo very good at the price.
It misses some things that are in its 'future' list but is quite powerful.
( I use A-Photo for panorama creation from multiple photos as well as simple layering/painting of items in posters/cards etc)
I am retired now and cannot keep paying the Adobe prices!

I bought Filter Forge a couple of weeks ago to try what effects can be achieved.
I created two filters that would be useful to me and found that the interface to Affinity has some issues.
Lessons so far......
1. The item that you give to FF has to be rasterised - you cannot keep it 'editable' although its layer effects like embossing can be kept.
2. Many filters (most?) in FF just return a rectangle to *replace* the item you give it.
If you make two copies of the item, you can give the copy to FF and drag the result inside the original (Paste Inside as other software would call it)
You can change the blend method, opacity etc at that point. You can rasterize again to reduce the size of the file.
3. I took a copy of the FF Chocolate Factory filter and modified it to take the alpha channel from the image and blend it into the Result.
This crops the effect to the outline of the item (text in my case) - but can leave some rubbish that just needs to be erased (because of not being integer shape )
For a filter like Chocolate Factory, which depends on 'depth' , I use a black object with lighter details to give texture.
4. I modified my Workshop5 filter to have a 'use transparency' option (not released yet as I am still testing)
This means I can use the effect in both ways....
a) create a pixel layer, run the filter and drag the result into the item - resizing it if required to change the scaling of the pattern.
then altering the blend mode. This method may be useful if you have an item that is already coloured? Not sure - still testing.
b) turn on the transparency option of the filter and let FF clip the effect to the provided item - changing the scaling in FF.

This works for me - hope that helps - I do not know if my transparency option would work cleanly in Photoshop - I think it might.

top one is my version of 'Chocolate Factory', others are Workshop5 - 3 with transp option, last without the option and dragged inside.

To be clear - beveling and shading is done by Affinity Photo before passing it to FF
Chocolate Factory adds a bit more subtle depth

edit: another issue is that the item to be processed must be within the square formed on the shorter side of the Photo document - for instance not in the bottom third of an A4 portrait document - Filter Forge likes squares! So I cannot create a complete A4 background, I think - more tomorrow as it is bed-time!

I have bought this with the discount and have used it just a little, but what is really awesome and amazing is the way that is able to make a panoramic stitching from multiple images that gives an excellent result, from the tests I have done, and is better than the one in photoshop that is limited and not comparable to the one in Affinity Photo.

I have Affinity photo and I use it with Filter Forge as a plugin. In the latest version there is a new feature called Pattern layers. you can turn Filter forge textures into pattern layers and save them as assets and use them over and over

1. In Affinity Photo create a new square document ( filter forge likes squares :) ) I often use 600px by 600 px
2. From the layer menu sel ect New Pattern Layer and set the dimensions to the same as your document. Affinity Photo will create a new pattern layer, you will see it in the layers panel.
3. With the pattern layer selected go to the filters menu and choose Plugins > Filter Forge > your Filter Forge version (in my case Filter Forge 9)
4.Filter forge will launch and you can choose your texture filter and set the settings as you like. Make sure that you tick seamless tiling on. Click apply to go back to Affinity.
5. your texture will be rendered on the pattern layer and will fill your entire document. It is easy to scale, rotate, and skew it and you can clip it inside any object.
6. To save it as an asset is easy, create a category in the assets panel (if the panel is not showing go to view and sel ect studio and select assets fr om the list to enable it) Make sure your pattern layer is selected and near the top right of the assets panel click the menu button and select add fr om selection and your pattern layer is added as and asset. you can drag and drop it into any document!

Here is an example of the chocolate factory. I modified a copy of the filter and changed it from using an image for the height to a simple perlin noise with a distortion component. Once I had the filter rendered as a pattern I clipped it into my text and added the 3d effect. The really nice thing is the text is still fully editable!

If it's a pattern to use several times in one document that wil be much faster, too.

And yes we are I think all loving the panorama ( I use CaptureOne to process my Raw photo sequences and create TIFFS that I stitch) - For many pictures the auto-fill works quite well - though I usually have to do a little patching.

Yes you can use the pattern assets in designer! And Publisher!
And another tip, You can create your pattern document with the pattern layer set up and save it as a template. I have a series of them in different sizes depending on what size the final out put will be. I keep these templates in a folder and I pointed my Affinity Photo to it in the file >new dialogue. You can use the templates in Designer but only in the pixel persona so I usually use them only in Photo, and then I use the pattern assets in designer.

A small extra I found useful -- putting the prepared patterns in a holder like an circle or square so that when you bring them into a document they don't immediately fill the page .... they act just like an artist's palette.
These are page 1 of my Workshop5 patterns, for instance - which is never ending source of random fun :-)

Hi Zayar -- I'm not an apple user so I cannot help much .... but I'll comment with some suggestions as not so many people will be reading this message.
Looking at the error message, it suggests that the FilterForge workspace is pointed at an area that needs you to have access privilege.

Is there an option to tell FF where to put its workpace, and you could put that within your user area?
Or perhaps the log file already exists and is read only (or owned by a different user) so you cannot write to it ?
Or the actual ???/tmp folder ( /tmp is a link on the Mac ?) needs a chmod to make it writeable for you?

Same, I also zoom out to 70-80%. My laptop screen is 1920x1080 and I use 150% scaling in Windows 10.
Although, I am sure many artists are using higher resolutions, or maybe browsing on their phones.

When you go to Filters you have to scroll down more to see the newest filters. But a few people like Ramlyn and Rachel and others are still submitting some really cool filters.

When you go to Gallery it's worse. To see the newest gallery images, you have to click the link all the way down at the bottom!

When you click on a filter, especially a "surface" filter, you have to scroll down quite a bit to see the author's description.

How to Use Photoshop for automatic Photo Collages of +1000 photos

In FIlter Forge there is already available the awesome and well done automatic Auto Collage by ThreeDee but the problem with this is that is limited to 16 photos and you have to load them all one by one manually

If FF could be able to have a way to load images from a folder would be really incredibly awesome, but that I think will not happen

Well, If you have Photoshop CC, I have found a way to be able to make automatic photo collages with hundreds or thousands of photos that are positioned correctly without overlapping and perfectly distributed photos of any size and ratio and load automatically your selected photos

The only bad thing is that you will not be able to add and customize the edges frames of the photos as it happens in ThreeDee filter

I did not install, and I'm glad I avoided it. Some older MacBooks get bricked (2013-2014) and numerous issues exist in the update and many other issues have occurred as well. Seems like Apple is moving away from professional users in favor of ios/phone apps. Very bad update, very unprofessional and not ready for prime time.

I did not install it either because there are still some software that has not been updated to this one, and so will not work and as you say there may be still some problems that still needs to be solved.

And I do not not want to spend much time updating and downloading the software updates unless there is clear and real benefit and it would be really worth it

I still do not know what the benefits of upgrading to Big Sur from Catalina, and I think there is a risk that as it is BIG Sur, you may be get lost inside of it and may be too big to handle ;-) :-) 8-)

Ok, I hate to say but IMHO Apple has turned greedy and kind of intrusive. Any of you who have Macs and tried to avoid big sur, no matter what you do, they almost force you to install it. I refuse, it trashes the current version of GIMP (2.10.22) so no go for me. I still see many users having issues. If you don't know this release begins the death spiral of Intel CPUs on the Mac.

A fail-safe, tiny app in the background will prevent Big Sur from installing, here it is:

Also you can temporarily turn off the Big Sur notification with the following command in Terminal:
defaults write com.apple.systempreferences AttentionPrefBundleIDs 0 && Killall Dock

... but it is temporary, going to System Preferences or the App Store may turn it back on.

I appreciate your comments. Purpose can overcome what are essentially inevitable events. Pandemics happen, damn it's now... is it a curse on us... probably not, this happens in cycles, in a sense covid has always been here, given mutation something like it was bound to happen. Then the "primitive" fears built into our DNA kick in. A little too much like Game of Thrones. The best thing is purpose, having something that you are good at, enjoy, and have at least some passion for. Also service to others: community service, family, being kind and considerate to others. ALL others.

As for me, I'm doing music and art at the same time, haven't done that in a long time. Tricky, but I am not bored.

I am making a research in different things related to 2D Hyperbolic graphics and art

I am preparing a huge Hyperbolic filter for FF 9 that will be available soon (not like this examples here, it is like this one here)

Well, About the topic of irregular Tesselations, one of the masters of it is M.C.Escher and here is a very interesting, well done and useful PDF tutorial about the secret of how he built his tesselations in such creative way

You already know that in FF and other software you can use the HUE component or adjustments to modify the colors of the source image, but the problem is that it will only change them according to the already available colors and the result may not possibly have the colors you may want

So how would it be if you could have a HUE tool that could take the source image colors pallette and apply them to another image to get the same colors?

Well this is what Adobe has been able to do

This was already available before if you made custom created specific color palettes, but it is not easy always to do, so now you will not need it

It would be really cool and interesting if this could be possible in FF to be made, but I do not think it could be possible

If you do not own Adobe Illustrator like me, then there is the opportunity to get this other app that seems to do the same thing

Hello, I know that FF is used many times to make seamless textures, and is very good, but there are sometimes, that is not easy to get well done seamless textures, or maybe the filter you have choosen does not allow to make seamless textures

There has been an impressive and amazing update and now is able to do more things, I have not tested myself it, but it looks really interesting and useful

And it seems that as it is really good and well done, this software has been bought by the Unity company so it belongs now to them

One of the new features is to be able to REMOVE the lights and shadows from any photo as explained in this link here
