Then open the filter attached to this message.
Finally load the image into the filter's "source" control. Escher Lizards.ffxml |

When we get some decent drawing tools (so you don't need to load an external image) this technique will really shine.

WOW!! this is very interesting and well done and I like it
HOW have you thought about this using the CUBES filter ??? ![]() ![]() This is very clever and well done when you look in the filter editor how is done, excellent!! Thanks very much for sharing the filter
YES!! YES!! FF Needs very much some kind of drawing tools or shape generator, or anything that will let you make your own simple geometric shapes like the lizards you have done here. |

I like how you have done the image source but I have made a slight modification adding borders to the lizards, so you can have the option of plain ones and ones with a white border around them
Also is clever and well done this source lizard image to be able to make the final lizards patterns, as you would never think that inside this image shown here below can be hiding 3 lizards ![]() ![]() |

![]() ![]() I still can´t believe how you have thought about this way of converting the cubes filter into this lizards making in a such a good way, although is not surprising coming from you that know so well how to do this kind of things and you are a master of this. Here is one example in SpaceRay´s mode that is already included in this filter ![]() ![]() |

I have to ask...
Suppose I want to make my own image instead of the lizards. How would I go about it? I honestly don't understand the locationing of all the parts and how they fit togather, so maybe you could help me out? |

If you want to truly make your own shapes (which I didn't do) it's a bit tricky. You first need to understand how wallpaper groups work. (My filter uses the p3 group)
http://www-m10.ma.tum.de/bin/view/Mat...tgruppenEn http://mathcs.slu.edu/escher/index.ph...le_Figures So once you have your pattern this is the method I used to bring it into FF... ![]() In Adobe Illustrator I grabbed one of the parallelogram shaped sections from the pattern. Then I skewed & scaled it into the square image you see in the first post. (this example actually looks a bit different but the method is the same) Now I didn't necessarily have to do it this way. I could have exported a rectangular swatch from Illustrator that would have tiled fine on it's own in FF without my fancy lookup method. I just like this method for the simplicity of the imput. Also note that if you go with one of the 90deg based tilings things are more intuitive. |

Good to know and thanks for explaining how this has been done, although I have not been able yet to understand it and be able to make my own, will have to see more about this.

Thanks for the info uberzev!
I've only heard about wallpaper groups a few months ago, and couldn't really get my head around all the numbers and symbols... I have a few ideas on how to implement some of them (random ones, as I can't tell which does what) in Illustrator, but haven't started working on it yet. I hope the links you post here will be easy enough to follow, so I can understand what I', doing, instead of just working on hunches ![]() |

You take 1 tile and you draw one part of the profile of an object. Typically this can be simple jaggies to something ridiculously complex like a outline of a tree. You either FLIP or TRANSLATE the location of that outline to the edge of the same tile. You do that for the bottom area as well. ![]() Theory = not hard. Actually getting good designs out of it = very difficult. How to get to "good designs" = get a sheet of grid paper and draw some designs by hand, translate them over to the computer. ![]() |

In CS6 they added a "make pattern" feature which allows you to interactively lets you create patterns. It's not as fancy as some of them but it works.

Only thing that's lame about AI's new pattern mode is you don't have access to the full toolset when working within it.
