i like pic 1, carl. nice mix of an aged look, a wrapping and the cowboy image.

Carl,

I've found a way to get rid of the high-pass and thus speed the filter up dramatically. On my old 1Ghz machine, the mod (attached below) renders a little over a minute while the library version takes close to 4 minutes to finish. smile;) smile:D

230 downloads and low use. now why does that seem incongruous to me?

Not incongruous... people probably like the visuals of the filter very much (like me) and download it, but are subsequently put off because it renders so slowly and isn't very interactive.

could be. sounds plausible. so, you think this might be one where folks download the filter and then mod it to make it faster and then carl doesnt get the credit for use? i'm so guilty of that, myself on other filters smile:devil:

Well, I'd wager that very few filter users actually come here to request that a filter be optimized. Those who know how will probably do it themselves, saving them the hassle of making a forum account and a post here.

Bottom-line: Interactive performance is MOST important! Ultimately, the majority of users will just stop using a poorly performing filter, regardless of how good its visuals are.

well, i put performance as second most important, but yes, i agree. i surprise myself sometimes with how i look through other filters in the library. i look first and foremost at the default preset, sometimes not even looking at any others. then, if the default is ok, i look at some of the others, but, you're right, if it's too slow, i'll either mod it or toss it unless it's a VERY exceptional filter that i REALLY want to use; then speed doesnt matter so much.

----Yeah but come on, you 'wrote the book' on that ha-ha, I'm still only good+ at static performance fixes ha-ha, and I have really spent some time on it. smile:p

Nope. Last time I checked, that book had "Vladimir Golovin" written all over the binding.

I had no idea it takes 4 mimutes to render, it takes 12.2 seconds on my machine and yours version takes 8.4 seconds [ thankyou, that was very kind of you smile8) ] I will resubmit with a few more tweaks to my controls names etc. This is a bit frightening, I'm going to have go and check all my filters and times them by 20 to get rough idea how long they are taking to render. One of my filter which I put blood sweat and tears into " Concrete or Damaged " take 1 minute 20 seconds on my machine no wonder it got 350 odd down loads and has never gone to HU which I was disappointed about. Interesting conversation thankyou the 3 of you smile:)

----About 4 mins per pass here. I run a single core P4 though, 2400Mhz and 1 gig of ram.

I don't know does your graphic card also effect the speed of rendering I've got the Nvidia Geforce 8800 Ultra smile:?:

GFX card isn't used in rendering. Unless you have some antique card that makes even blits slow (by "antique" I mean "manufactured in 2001 or earlier") -- it doesn't matter smile:)

Thanks for answer onyXMaster, what about a Ageia PhysX 100 series adaptor, can that effect render speed smile:)

ageia is strictly physics rendering ---there are open source initiatives that would allow you to port cycles from your gpu (graphics proccesor) and PPU (physics processor) to computational efforts but not right now theese are dedicated chipsets used for their singular purpose

Rendering such as this is strictly cpu --the bigger question is how well does ff take advantage of multple cors, hyper transport and 64 bit since theese are all tech's that have been around awhile now

Ive been kind of wondering when the next patch would be released --its been ages since a FF patch was release wanst that long ago when they where coming often I think they could foccus on maximum utilization of chipset tech to enchnce performance since both photoshop and FF can be hogs and together really slow down a system that is less then top notch
lets all whine for a wine port
