Hey..

I'm working on a new planet filter (yep, yet another it seems). Below is some previews on different types of planets/celestial spheres.

Critique is very welcome..
Anyone have ideas on how to create rings (like around Saturn)?

Promising. I'm guessing you've already checked this for further inspiration?

As for the basic shape of the rings, you could create ellipses via profile gradients and subsequently rotate them by using the 'any angle rotate' snippet, for example.

Allright, got the rings right (damn I wish there were some basic shape modules)..
I just need to get the bumpmap modulation right for the rings (the front lower left side of the ring is shadowed.. it shouldn't).

The below preview is rendered using a modified version of Sjeiti's "Gas giant" surface filter (http://www.filterforge.com/filters/3982.html)

Looking at some pictures of the Earth and its cloudcover, I noticed there's alot of twirls/storms - any ideas on how to do a twirl like transform/distortion? Or get a similar effect with noise modules?

lookin good, sphinx. i love the rings addition.

not knowing how you did the rings, i dont know about your shadow difficulty.

try a perlin noise followed by a noise distortion for the swirling. and, maybe a motion blur. and if one noise distortion doesnt work, try two.
If wishes were horses... there'd be a whole lot of horse crap to clean up!

just noticed this one smile:) smile:) smile:) smile:) smile:) if you need help on the rings email me they should be simple enough so should moons --I can whip out the mechanics for it preaty easy but as far as makeing realistic gradients ---I will leave that to you --Im okay with the mechanics but when it comes to colors and refinement frankly I SUCK.

If you prefer to do it on your own --a moon is obvious but the rings simply take a ring gradient --easy to produce then skew it useing any of the many perspective or skewing techniques that can be found in the snippets.. The alplha for the blend is a little trickier mechanically but also preaty easy to do

Im really impressed with this one
