What happens with your computer ?

Honestly, I don't really know... Every random amount of minutes the computer freezes for about 10 minutes, and the mouse moves only about twice a minute. Even NumLock only changes state once or twice a minute.

CPU is around 6% used, and Physical memory between 10% to 60%, depends on what I'm doing.

All I know is the HDD light lights up and stays on for the whole 10 minutes. Then it's all back to normal for a while, till it happens exactly the same, over and over.

As far as I can tell, I don't have any antivirus, defragger, etc. scheduled to run automatically ever, they're all on manual, on demand settings.

Because I'm a too damn lazy. I should format and reinstall Windows, that's the healthy thing to do once every couple of <Days \ Weeks \ Months \ Years> (depending on user preference, and how bad your copy of windows is).

I think I can help you with some questions

How hot is the place you are having the computer ?

Which version of Windows do you have ?

How clean is the computer inside ?

Have you checked the MSCONFIG to see if there any unknown and unrecognizable new element or software that it starts at the start of windows ?

With my experience this seems to be that some kind of software is taking the resources of your computer and takes the control of it and does not let others tasks to be performed in the right way.

I had a very, very bad experience 3 years ago, when I had the computer that was more slow than a reumatic snail, to open one file it could take around 10 minutes!!! And to open an application would be better to open it and then it was frozen for around 15 minutes and then I could come back. After suffering much with this, and after much research the problem was from a trojan virus that was installing many addittional software that was a real hog for the computer resources, AND I had installed a antivirus and antispyware, but was a very new one that attacked this software.

ALSO to be able to write, the keyboard was also slow and could only write slowly and far away from the normal speed, and the mouse was like it was freezing lots of times.

This is strange, there must be probably something that needs to access the hard drive to make it´s work and blocks all the activity of all the other tasks and sucks all the power for himself until it finishes and so then all is back to normal.

What antivirus are you using ?

Do you have ALSO an antispyware software?

Do you have an internet security software ? Because if you ONLY have an antivirus, is like having nothing.

Do you know what are you doing just before the computer freezes and halts and makes this that you are telling here ?

How frequently happens this ?
Is there a time pattern or it happens whenever it wants ?

HARD DRIVE HEAVILY FRAGMENTED

Also I can tell you another experience fr om mine wh ere once it happened also that my computer was very slow and happened also that the hard drive was frozen and active much time until is was then back to normal after some time, and I was sure that was no virus, malware or any other bad thing, so after a research I discovered that the problem was that I had a very fragmented C: drive and the computer was like mad looking for all the scattered bits of information all over the hard drive.

So I had a very good and excellent Defragmenter professional software, and this repaired the problem.

With my experiance, it's the AV itself that malfunctions and developes OCD. Then it decides to freeze everythign for a suprise super important secret virus hunt. But since I don't have any viruses or trojans, it needs to look again. And again. Then again.

It happaned to me before, but simply reinstalling the AV didn't do the trick, I just don't remember what I had to do to get it to work right. Could be that I got a newer version. I dunno.

Anyway, about your questions:
How hot - Too hot, it's around 100 degrees F all the time.
Which version of Windows - Windows 7 64 bit
How clean is the computer inside - As clean as one could expect when you have 4 cats and live in a dusty hot place.

Have you tried turning off indexing of the Hard Drive?..You can also try running this and see if it might be a heat issue....

Yes, CFandM, I forgot to tell Morgantao to make a cleaning of windows with a very good software that is from the same company piriform

www.ccleaner.com This an excellent and powerful free software that works very well

Please, run this software and clean the trash and garbage from your windows, and also clean your registry (cliclk yes when asked to make a backup)

This alone could help much sometimes.

While I typed my previous post, you have been busy smile:D
So here's an addendum:

I keep my HDD defragged at all times, and it's in exelent shape (frag wise).
Indexing has never been on. I keep it off since day one.
I have Kaspersky's internet security 11 and antivirus.

As for time pattern, I have noticed that 3 minutes past every hour there's a always a freezing of around 7-8 minutes. Then there are random freezes in between, which are usualy only arond 5-6 minutes. Inafct, I had the hourly freeze while typing this post.

If you have seen my history above, I did not tell HOW did I solve this. Although I had the problem of the trojan virus, the greatest and bad problem WAS FROM THE SECURITY SOFTWARE !!!! AND IT WAS KASPERSKY´S

YES, exactly this is what happens with Kaspersky that gets mad and paranoid searching continually the hard drive for supossed threats and blocks the computer for some time.

It was really VERY ANNOYING AND FRUSTRATING when this was happening to me and then I contacted customer support and they told that it could not be stopped and if I wanted to have the best security this was the way smile:evil:

AND I have read on a magazine that Kasperky 11 is even worse and have more problems and freezes frequently the computer even when all is clean and working right.

After uninstalling the Kaspersky I have not had again this problem.

NOW the best internet security (and very cheap too with many offers available up to 70% discount) is surely NORTON INTERNET SECURITY 2012, it works flawlessly, is very silent, and it has a complete control of the computer BEING TRANSPARENT and does never hog or make a problem in the computer.

YES, this is the same as it happened to me TOO, I had KIS for around two years, with some scattered problems but nothing serious, UNTIL one day the computer began to make this freezing and was all because of KIS, so I kissed it goodbye

Kasperski is crap, turns a super fast computer into a snail.
I had McAffee and before that Avira and I was really unhappy with both of them because they slowed down my PC, at times taking up all resources and causing all kinds of trouble. I ended up installing Security Essentials and I have to say I´m really happy. It runs in the background without slowing things down and doesn´t detect harmless things as viruses like McAffee lol.

Well if you have Windows 7 home then that doesn´t mean much lol. you can set updates to manually just to come back from a coffe break to find your computer just rebootet itself in the middle of a long render for a critical update.
Same goes for the antivirus, it doesn´t really care about it´s schedule.
The other day I was wondering why my PC was working like hell with me away and everything closed.
I opened the task manager but couldn´t find anything suspicious, all as it should be, nothing running in the background.
In the end it turned out it was the antivirus performing a full scan 3 days before it was scheduled lol.

I have windows 7 professional, but that doessn't mean it listens to what I want smile:D

KIS is annoying in more than one way, I'll be the first to admit. I've been using all kinds of KAV and KIS for the better part of 10 years now, since it always seemed to be the best for my needs. Could be that it's time is up, and it's time to replace it with something fresher.
I used to have Norton antivirus for many years, untill about 10 years ago, when it became a notorious memory hog, and new viruses could add themselves to it's white list. That turned it to a useless software. I'll have to check it out again, for as SR said, it seems the norton guys reinvented it and made it useful again.

Too bad I have around 21 months of KIS license, as I only recently bought a two year license. That's money well spent smile;)

Is TRUE I also had been using Norton until it became useless as you have said right, and this is why I changed to KIS (great error choosing this) and then I had many small problems until the biggest problem happened that nearly broke my computer making it incredibly slow.

NORTON NEW GENERATION MUCH BETTER

Since 2011 (or 2010) edition, Norton have rewritten completely the software and made it totally different and the first and main point was that is would NOT BE A RESOURCE HOG and would NOT slow down the computer and be annoying to the user.

NORTON INTERNET SECURITY 2011 and 2012 have already won many awards from magazines, and many professionals around the internet.

I would not have trusted again in Norton if I did not read so many good comments for this new versions.

It even has a resource meter to show how much Norton is consuming and you CAN keep it active and it will not bother you and annoy with anything bad, and does not slow down the computer at all.

I am very happy I have choosen this one AND works very good ALSO against many threats I have had and is always vigilant and protecting my computer against any possible invader.

Well, I just installed KIS 12 which is supposed to be MUCH better than KIS 11 and also removed another big bugware from Western Digital. I don't know if it ever had an impact on my computer, but according to many thousands of angry users, it's a major CPU hog that attacks at the most rediculus times.

For now, it looks like everything is going much smoother. I'll have to give it a few days to see if it's actually better, or just a lucky break.

Yep. I have an external Western Digital HD, which came with WD Smartware.
It's supposed to be good for automatic backups and stuff like that, but I never used it. I read online that a great many people found this to be more of a bugware than a smartware, as it would take 60% of CPU power when the external drive isn't even connected to the computer...

While my computer was freezing and lagging, I thought maybe this had something to do with it, so I uninstalled it (There's no way to tell it to NOT load with windows).

I have installed WD Smartware since 2 years ago and until now I have not had any problem with it, is true that I have also seen that many people say that this software is very bad because it hogs the computer and slows it down, but I think (probably I am wrong and I do not know it) that this does not happen in my computer.

I will have to investigate and see more about this and see really what is the real problem with WD Smatware and see if I may have a problem and I do not know it. My computer does not freeze and do not have strange problems, but always is good to know if it can be better.

Is true that this is always active, even when no WD external drive is connected.

Let me ask you this:
Have you ever used Smartware? Other than it loading with windows, have you ever opened it and did anything with it?
If the answer is no, then it's safe to say you can uninstall it, and keep on not using it.
