I'm unable to create a group of any single control component. I guess this is by design.

What do you mean GMM?
I could group a single checkbox, and as sphinx said, it makes a mess of things... can't use it for anything, can't input anything to it, and it's output is always the sign

I don't see this as a big problem. Grouping bare control components, single or multiple, can be useful for quickly outlining the group interface. Then you can go inside and wire the stuff properly -- and the warning sign will prevent you from forgetting about this.
In any case, if there's a better way to deal with this, we're open to suggestions.

On my workstation I cannot group a single gray control component at all.
I can only group a single Color, Grayscale or Curve control.
(Windows 7 Home premium 32-bit.)

I was able to group lone control components (all types) and a combo of unconnected Color, Curve and Slider. Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit.

Yes, I can group an unconnected control as well.

What happens with the unconnected gray control components when you group them is that the output becomes a green output, so you can't connect them to gray inputs. Output type conversion issue...

Which is perfectly fine, because FF doesn't have first-class numeric (gray) components yet.
