I was getting a message that Filter Forge was down yesterday (again) and now I'm getting "Error 404 – Page Not Found
The page you are trying to access does not exist. Possibly it has been moved or deleted." for the filters page...

This is a little bit of a long episode... almost a week so far.

We're still not back to normal.

We almost restored last time, but our [censored] hosting provider decided to finally react to a support ticket filed three days ago and then recalled, and wiped our almost restored server clean.

We're already running this from a new hosting provider, but a lot of things are still broken (forum CSS, mail server, wiki etc etc.)

After we've restored the web server, we'll begin moving the library server too. Our current hosting provider is basically a rotten corpse living off its last remaining customers.

As for the cause of all this mess, it's a combination of bad luck (our HDD crashed while we were looking for a new hosting), rotten hosting provider (didn't even say "we are sorry"), our own inertia (if it ain't broke don't fix it), and 8-year old infrastructure (a physical dedicated server).

Hopefully, this won't happen again. Fingers crossed.

Update: As of November 28, 2012, we've almost restored the web server (some minor issues still remain), so everything should be working almost normally. smile:D

Thank you for that answer... few times have I seen anyone give more that "we are working on it" as an answer, leaving the customer/forumite to wonder what is actually going on.
A more descriptive answer as such lets people know you are not just sitting ignoring the problem and gives them an idea of the extent of the troubles and challenge you face.
Good luck and I hope things run smoother now.

Heh,heh... rotten corpse living of it's last remaining customer... GoZombie.com was a terrible web host anyway.

PS... the Filter page seems to be working now.

Thanks.

Vladimir, thanks for the detailed and honest reply!
As McGyver said, most times admins assume the users are too stupid to understand that thing-a-mabob called "Inter-Tent" doohicky, and either ignore the users or tries to sell all kinds of magical fairy tales as to why the site seems to be down.
I've even seen admins blaming it on the user's computer not working right...

I hope all is going to go well in the move to the new, and better hosting provider. smile:)

On the bright side, we finally have a legitimate excuse to move to a more modern kind of hosting and shed some server-side software cruft along the way smile:)

Hosting Provider, look at RackSpace if you have not already obtained a new provider.

Robert, we're already talking with Rackspace -- I always wanted to try them out. It is quite possible that we'll chose them for the library server. Obviously, Amazon S3 is another viable option, but their customer support is no match to that of Rackspace, as I heard, so our dilemma is basically "customer support vs price". On the web server side, we've settled on Linode and I must say I'm totally impressed so far -- though I admit that Rackspace offers a lot more options for scaling (e.g. they offer SSD volumes for just $70 per 100GB per month!)

I have a couple of filters I have been working on and I am wondering if it would be better to hold off submitting them to the library for a while?

Hi angelize

I had new filters that I have submitted last week and lost because of the FF problem. So I have reupload it again last wesnesday and lost it once again. And I will not reupload it soon. I think that the best is to wait until the all FF website will be fixed. By just looking what the forum looks like, sure that the problem is not yet resolved entirely. But you do as you want. It was just my advice. smile:)

I think it's better to hold off submitting filters until we sort things out. As for the filters that were submitted during the last two weeks, most likely they are not lost, they just aren't displayed on the web site. We use a different server for serving filters, and the web site is just a mirror that gets updated every time a new filter is submitted to the library server. Since the web site was wiped out, these mirror data have been lost, so the web server doesn't display the filters.

The best way to check if the filters are present in the library is to use Filter Forge's obsolete built-in library browser (can be enabled in Tools > Options > Online).

Good that now it looks better now and can be again be read well and separated the posts, although the time shown on the "recent forum posts" I think is still wrong, as a post that was posted 6 hours before is shown as 2 hours before, but this is not important.

Also as said by CFandM, the amount of registered and non registered users is accumulated and is not in real time or in the amount of time shown.

WILL ALL THE POSTS BE LOST AGAIN AND GO BACK TO 1 NOVEMBER ?

As it is said that the forum is going to be changed to another server and then it must be copied a backup of the forum, I wonder if there will be time to make another backup and include all the new posts or we will have to go back again to the forum of the 1st of November.

If this forum still survives until next saturday (when is made a new backup according to GMM) so it will include all the recent posts and will they be safe?

IS IT SAFE NOW TO MAKE POSTS OR IS STILL THE RISK OF LOOSING ALL AGAIN?

Please, I would like to know if there is the risk that it could happen a third time that the forum could be down again and loose again all the threads and posts written from the last backup made.

Thanks

You know SpaceRay, for some of those posts you put loads of love and attention to, you should probably keep those separately available on a blog or some web-outlet solution. I honestly feel some of your posts deserve and belong in a environment where they don't get lost so easily as a public forum. At the point that you're begging for guarantee over a public forum where some of us just tred forth, caring little about what rant we have in the recent-posts section, you're better off considering and investing in finding a place where your love for each post and interest is better valued.

And I'm also not saying the forums don't value things here. I don't mean it like that. I mean that if you're going to feel troubled about losing posts on a public forum, you should consider the alternative. If you put all the love, care, and personality into something, don't put it on places where you're begging for reliability.

Just on that note, forums in general were never designed to handle tutorials, large lists, loads of imagery. It handles text very well. It's a system for question and answer, commentary and response. I mean we kinda break the bounds a bit, but it's a pretty rigid system. Come to think of it, it's been pretty much the same since the 80s or the 90s.

And just so you know... I really don't mean any form of spite. I'm kinda saying because you seem extremely troubled over losing a fair number of posts. I figured when the forums went down you'd be the one getting frustrated and really personal over it. I mildly share that frustration, but it was more because I was bored and not feeling productive.

Lastly, I'm a huge forum nut. You have no idea how many forums I'm on. smile;) I love forums.

How about the Filter Library? is it ported over to the new server yet?

And I have to say the whole FF site in general now loads much faster.

Thanks very much Skybase for your comments and nice, kind and good words and for caring much for me, I agree with you and you are right, AND I have a good news for you that I have already begun making my own website/portfolio/blog since 15 days ago but as I am a perfectionist I want to make it all right and want that it is special in some way and eye catching and to show my works in a elegant and nice way, and not just a simple website.

I am making it with Wordpress.org and I am using this Chocolate Wordpress theme

So I will be able to put my important and valued things into the blog and so they will not be lost inside the deep ocean of the forum threads and posts.

as there is a link to the legal forum guarantees I want to tell this

Perhaps I am writing wrong and being misunderstood as many other times, I would never put a lawsuite or go against FF Inc. for the problems with forum and loosing posts or that the forum is not working right, this is not at all my intention

What I want is just to know IF it would be safe again to continue using the forum as before and as it has been usual until it happened the server error, and if there could any possible knowledge from the person that keeps and maintains the forum and what is the state of the server and if there is a risk that the errors could happen again soon or not. Perhaps this can´t be known.

Sorry if I have done it or said it wrong.

angelize, the filter library is still on the old server, but we'll begin relocating it as soon as we can. We aren't doing that now because we're still working on the web server: for example, the wiki is still down, there are glitches in the new user registration pipeline, there's excess disk IO activity on the server we can't yet pinpoint, etc etc.

As for the website loading faster, yes, we noticed that too -- and this is despite the excess IO activity! This speedup was completely unexpected. I guess this is because our new server hardware uses a RAID10 as a disk subsystem, instead of just one physical HDD.

According to this, does it mean that the Forum is ALREADY in the NEW server and will not be changed again ?

If yes, is now more safe than before as it has now a good RAID 10 disk subsystem?

Of course I know that a RAID 10 is not 100% failproof and there is always the risk of damage BUT much less than with a normal hard disk or other RAID.

A strip of mirrors, SpaceRay. Hence 1+0 (mirror+strip) or just written as 10. It's got a very high tolerance to failure and delivers excellent performance. So the chance of "sad things" happening to the forums are rarer of very obvious reasons, unless otherwise due to "Acts of God" which you typically can't do anything about with little compensation.

Sorry I did this question wrong, because is obvious that a RAID 10 is much more safe and have much less risk of damaging the data as it has much higher tolerance to failure.

What I should have asked is not this, and would be better to say that now that the forum has been put in with this RAID 10 if there could be any other external problem with server or hosting provider other than this that could break the forum again.

Yes, even the best RAID or safest hard drive system can´t do anything against floods, earthquakes, tornado, fire, or airplane crash into the server building smile;) smile:D

BTW, the wiki is up.

Regarding the situation in general: we're almost done with the web server, except for several minor issues. The server runs full-environment rotated daily backups, though the additional off-site backup is not yet implemented, and the backup restoration exercise is not yet in place.

The library server is still with the old provider, but we'll begin moving it as soon as possible, probably sometime within the next week.

I have to say... I think it is so cool that you are keeping us updated and are sharing this information with us. Thank you.
At another site I frequent, there have been so many problems since a recent software/site "upgrade" and all anyone ever gets as an answer (when they do get one from the actual staff) is what basically amounts to "everything is just fine-there are no problems"... This sorta burns you as a customer and site member when you can clearly see it mostly NOT fine or working well... especially after 5 or more months...
After a while you start to feel like a mushroom... kept in the dark and being fed BS.
Honesty and openness does so much more to ensure customer confidence and loyalty than any amount of PR work ever can.
Thanks.

I know what you mean as I have been also a user there BEFORE they broke it and chnaged the website to the new one and since then I have not been there anymore.

If you know WHEN they are going to be fixing and solving the problems, there is one answer they can give, it will be solved DAZ SOON smile;) smile:D
