ok, we've talked about this in other threads, but i thought it time to do something with it. i looked around on the rest of the site and didnt see anything similar so thought i'd start this.
the idea is to SEE what filter forge can do and is doing. we've got some great filters coming out, both from the developers and the beta testers, so let's show them off a bit. to make this work well, i propose using as few different base images as possible. in this way we'll be showing the differences in the filter rather than in the base image. we could use several base images that fit within some categories such as landscape, close up, portrait, black & white and so on. then, folks would copy that base image to their drives and apply their filter effect and upload the finished image back to here. i suppose there's no reason folks couldnt also load images of a given filter in that filter's thread in the Filters forum also, but for here, i'd like to compare the results of different filters to the same image. so, this is different. there is also one other small thing to contend with. some filters dont need or use a base image. filters like 'Landscape' output an image all by themselves. that's fine. for those, simply post the output image here or in the Filters forum. i'm loaning a picture of mine to start this. this is a picture i took some 35 years ago or so. it is copyrighted by me and may not be used other than on the Filter Forge web site(s). feel free to use it here on the FF site, however. if others have unique pictures that they have the rights and permissions to and would like to submit them for use, please do so. we could use a portrait type, a landscape type, a good black and white and maybe some others. but let's keep how many we use to a minimum. the idea is to compare filters on the SAME images and not compare the base images themselves. so, have fun and post often. remember, the file size limit for images being posted is currently 250k so you may have to compress some of your base and finished images. craig ![]() If wishes were horses... there'd be a whole lot of horse crap to clean up!

Excellent idea! I was thinking of making a new thread called 'Show off your filters' where we could apply a filter to a photo or graphic and upload it so everyone can see how cool it looks. Not just your own filters, but the filters that others have made and you like.
Thanks for your pic...I will look for a good photo in my collection to upload. Donna ![]() |

thanks donna. i look forward to your image(s)
![]() ok, this is that same rose picture with 'Kaeleidoscopic Effects 1' applied to it. also, it's entirely ok if you do more than just apply a Filter Forge filter to your image. if you also want to use your graphic editor to apply other effects, why, that's fine; just so long as there is at least one FF filter applied in there somewhere. craig ![]() If wishes were horses... there'd be a whole lot of horse crap to clean up!

I don't like the idea of using the same base image. After all the filters section here already has a gallery of that. I think the author should choose the image that best shows off his filter.

uberzev,
the filters section does not show the filter applied to an image; it only shows the filter effect itself. so, this is different. as for using the same base image, the idea is to compare the filters. this is best done with using the same base image. this shows up the differences much better, filter to filter, than by constantly changing the base image which, in some cases, you wouldnt be able to see the whetehr the differences in final images was due to the filter or the base image. and lastly, there's no reason you cant start your own thread that uses whatever image you want. in fact, that's a good idea. we are, after all, trying to show off the filters. so, have at it ![]() craig If wishes were horses... there'd be a whole lot of horse crap to clean up!

Here's my first contribution a la Andy Warhol...
![]() I cropped the original so it would be square, then ran it through Flex Tiling. Then I adjusted the red hue in each square. ![]() |

momonline,
very cool. glad folks are participating. whitedove, i like the warhol ![]() the hota leaf gives us our macro. good. and if you could separate out your black and white portrait, that would make it easier for others to use as their base. ok, so we have a color floral, a floral macro, and a black and white portrait. we could still use a landscape and i think a color portrait would be good also. craig If wishes were horses... there'd be a whole lot of horse crap to clean up!

i couldnt resist taking a shot at your portrait. 100 years ago, ay? hmmm, i wish i'd known you 100 years ago then
![]() lovely picture, by the way. you take it yourself? i found the black and white interesting. i've been using only color images as my base images, so it took me a while to find a suitable filter and setting. i did a little post-processing in paint shop pro as well, just to reduce a bit of the noise i'd produced with the filter. craig ![]() If wishes were horses... there'd be a whole lot of horse crap to clean up!

Craig -- that new filter looks good. I'm not sure I understand how the effect is made, it would be interesting to take a look at what's inside.

Craig,
Original abstract was done with a Photoshop filter from Mehdi called Kaleidoscope. It was a free plugin. I did the image several years ago I think it is still available. |
