Hi,

Basically, i've downoladed the trial of FF today and think its amazing except when I open photoshop CS5, click filters, scroll to filter forge, a FF opens in a new window and you need to import an image rather than just editing the layer. For example, i'm working on a grunge image and i want the grunge effect to be applied to that 1 layer. Because ive already edited that layer a lot, i can't edit it in ff then import it to photoshop as an image.

I've probably confused everyone smile:( All i'm asking is can ff be used to edit layers directly from photoshop or does it have to open in a new window and only edit images not layers?

I understand you very well, You want to apply the filter forge effects to individual layers of a work you are doing the same that can be done with the native Photoshop filters and without going outside of Photoshop or to a new window, well I have to say that regretably is NOT posssible.

Filter Forge does not work that way and can´t be done like a normal filter, I have already asked as a wishlist for this feature, but I think it will not be possible to do it this way.

You can read it here ---> http://www.filterforge.com/forum/read...9&TID=8649

Perhaps there could be possibly a way to import into the FF plugin and open in the FF window just the layer you have active and selected and not the whole image, but not sure if it would be possible.

I'm confused... I use FF on layers all the time in photoshop? Maybe I just don't understand the question...

It is possible.I use Filter Forge through Gimp on separate layers quite often and what i do is use a script that is Python. It calls the Filter Forge program and imports the layer as a temp PNG image too FF and then i edit the image (layer), and it gets imported back into Gimp as either a new layer or an duplicated one with the effects applied. The temp PNG image is then auto deleted.
Not sure if it is possible to do in Photoshop as there is no way to add the extension as a shellout.Unless the developers do it.
I call about 20 other programs this way.I can even call PS itself through Gimp and import back to Gimps interface. smile:)
My calls include Paint Dot Net, Xara, and Dynamic Auto Painter.

I added the script because the new Gimp UI and PSPI didn't handle some 8bf's very well anymore.
XnView does so i call XnView through it and edit the layer then send it back to Gimp.

Like Lucie, I use Filter Forge within Photoshop as a filter unless I'm making a pattern tile.

Just have the layer you want to filter selected in the layers palette before applying a given effect as you would for any filter. Note: Filter Forge will not be available in the menu if you attempt to apply directly to a layer mask.

You'll find that when you use Filter Forge from within Photoshop you can use the Fade command if desired. If you have CS3+, you can even use FF as a smart filter if you enable the script called "Enable All Plug-ins For Smart Filters".

File<Sc ripts<browse<Programs<Adobe<PhotoshopCS3<Presets<Sc ripts...enableallpluginsforsmartfilters.jsx.

Note: This script is not enabled by default in CS3...not sure about whether it is enabled or not by default in CS5.

That's one of the reason I always use it in photoshop instead of as a standalone, it adds a lot of versatility.
