HOW TO BACKUP YOUR FILTERS ?

THIS IS FOR WINDOWS VERSION (For MacOS Version please see next post)

This is a short guide to be able to make a backup copy for all your FF filters that you have downloaded to the FF library and you can have a copy if your FF instalation or Windows is broken and need to reinstall, of for security or whatever.

Well this is easy to make if you know how

write %APPDATA% in the search field of the start menu in Windows 7 and look for the Filter forge folders you have installed and look for the system folder and then to the Library

OR write the direct link %APPDATA%\Filter Forge\System\Library

(by default it is C:\Documents and Se ttings\YourUserName\Application Data\Filter Forge\System)

VERY IMPORTANT IF YOU HAVE RENAMED THE FILTER FORGE FOLDER

But if you have renamed the folder installation when installing Filter forge then you have to change the "filter forge" to the new name you have put.

%APPDATA%\Filter Forge new name\System\Library

For example I have

%APPDATA%\Filter Forge 2\System\Library

%APPDATA%\Filter Forge 3\System\Library

Please, Can any moderator or Filter Forge user that have a Mac, give me the full information or how to filters are stored in the Mac

I know from GMM that are stored here

On Mac:
~/Library/Application Support/Filter Forge 2/System

But I do not know if it needed any more information or what happens if you have renamed your filter forge folder as I do not have a Mac.

You will hardly get our moderators to use a Mac smile;) Your question is answered here but feedback from Mac powerusers is always welcome.

Concerning your above post, please note that:
- %APPDATA% resolves to different path on different OS versions, in Win7 its is somewhere in C:\Users\

- mind the version suffix when speaking of direct links. For Filter Forge 1.0, 2.0 and 3.0 it will be
%APPDATA%\Filter Forge\System\Library,
%APPDATA%\Filter Forge 2\System\Library and
%APPDATA%\Filter Forge 3\System\Library , respectively.

Thanks very much GMM for the link to the Wiki, I did not know that the answer was there.

I have found there something very good and that IS MUCH BETTER AND EASIER in Windows to find and open very quicly the folder that contains the FF filters smile:eek:

VERY QUICK AND EASY WAY TO OPEN FOLDER CONTAINING FF FILTERS

From the Wiki link above in previous post:

To quickly get to the folder containing the filter files, sel ect any filter and press Ctrl+L (or choose Filter > Locate File from the menu). This will open an Explorer window showing the location.

This is true !!! I did not know this way, I have opened Filter Forge, and then select of the filters fr om the library in window in the left panel and then press Ctrl + L and very quickly it opens the folder containign the filters !!!

This is much better in my opinion than the solution I have put to write %APPDATA% in the windows search. AND MORE, this way it will open the right folder so you do not have to care and see if it is FF 1, FF 2 or FF3. Excellent.

I think this is is one of the most asked questions when you want to backup the filters that is why I have made this thread after seeing lots of post and threads asking for this

Although I think that is better explained in the other thread that is shown in the post above this.

If you find the %% intimidating, there is a much easier way to find the filters of filter forge without doing this

The easiest way is to open Filter Forge, go to the fiter menu at the left, and then select a filter in the filter list and press Ctrl+L.

After pressing Ctrl + L a new window will open showing you ALL the filters you have, and then you can copy them all and make a backup.

This does NOT include the "my filters" folder or any of the "my presets" you may have.

When I can I will make a newer thread to arrange, filter and clean all the information into one only thread so is more clear to follow and use

Also there is another thread that I want to mix with this one, and is the one below

Where are the downloaded Filter Forge filters located physically?

I don't know if you already mentioned this, but you can locate filters by right-clicking on a filter and telling it to locate file. Do this for one regular filter and one "my filters" filter and you will see the folders that store both kinds.

I'm a little confused - I've created 28 filter presets (based on other filters) that I need to share with my client. When I hit apple L, it brings up the whole library. I can't tell which filter is which. They don't need my whole library, just the ones I've created for them.

When I go to Library > Application Support > Filter Forge 3 there is no "My filters" I can see "My Presets" but inside there are only 4 files! Why aren't there 28? It says 28 within Filter Forge.

How can I find the exact preset file I need to share / send?

mamajane, presets are stored within the ffxml file. So you only need to share ffxml files.

In FilterForge, right click on the filter you're looking for, and select "locate file".

I'm on a mac. The only thing that comes up when I right-click is "Apply Preset, Upd ate Prese t, or Delete"

If I hit apple + L it brings up the library but has the same filter file selected regardless of which filter I select in filter forge.

Hi mamajane, the presets themselves are saved within the filter's file itself, so what you need to do is send your ffxml file.

To get the exact location of your ffxml file, check out the screenshot I attached.

I right click on the filter, which gives me the menu with "locate file". Sorry for the mild confusion.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Yuya for helping

Here is something I have put in another thread

FILTERS WITH FACTORY PRESETS

If the presets you have done yourself are inside a filter that has factory presets, then all your own custom presets will be saved to

C:\Users\xxxxxx\AppData\Roaming\Filter Forge 4\My Presets

FILTERS WITHOUT FACTORY PRESETS

If the presets you have done yourself are inside a filter that has NO factory presets and all the presets are editable, then all your own custom presets will be saved inside the filter file itself and not saved to the My Presets folder, so in this case, to make the backup, you have to backup your own presets, you need to backup the filter itself.

I have uninstalled FF5 in the very recent past and lost every new filter I made before submitting them as FF5 in the end would not even open up. So what am Ito do. Sent in a request to FF5 site and they are not very helpful with much. Hope someone can suggest a very easy fix, anyway thanks.

I think that there is no relation between making a backup of the filters you have and not being able to submit filters to the library.

I know that it may happen sometimes that the submit wizard has problems to contact to the server for whatever reason, and then after sometime it is solved by itself.

I am not sure, but I think that is not probably a problem with your version of FF or with your computer
