If you're running a CMS also, I can recommend you find a solution that integrates with the CMS. I often use Kunena along with Joomla..

I prefer SMF myself: http://www.simplemachines.org/ . It does a much better job of keeping track of read/unread topics than PHPBB or vBulletin. It's what I use for my Paintball2 forums: http://dplogin.com/forums/
