Hey Adobe started it!
Anyway just make some popular filters and you can get FF for free. Alternatively I can sell you a copy of FF at a better deal than Carl is offering.

no, a lifetime upgrade shld not be mandatory! each minor upgrade is free, but each major upgrade takes a TON of work and that wouldnt be fair to the folks at FF. come on, let's be fair. If wishes were horses... there'd be a whole lot of horse crap to clean up!

The fact that they even offer lifetime upgrades for free in any form is highly unusual in a graphics software company. FF is also on the extreme low end of the pricing spectrum for graphics software.

I cant see much incentive for filter creators to contribute to the public library once they have their lifetime license. Am I missing something?

Lifetime upgrade should be MANDATORY! = facism
Mandatory - A "mandate", or command / demand.
To Kraellin, - I totally agree. I would love to achieve the free copy of FF based on a filter(s) I forged. It drives me to create quality filters. Is it the only motivation, no of course not. But it is a rather good one, and I think it weeds out some of the slopped out entries as well. Quality not quantity, etc... no?
Aside from that, I agree with tiger as well... FF is VERY affordable by comparison. ~Myrrdraal~

Yes, I think like you, lifetime upgrade are not obligatory, and should not be, as you say major upgrades (version number change) takes really VERY MUCH work to do, and test and they do not work only for love of Filter Forge, they must earn good money for their work. So I think is good to have free upgrades within the same version, but paid ones in changing versions, and the upgrades are affordables and much cheaper than the full version.
For all the features and THOUSANDS of filter you can use and the excellent quality results you can get with them, it is very affordable in comparison to others and you many times special offers and discounts thta makes it even more cheaper.
Please, tell me a single software company that have lifetime upgrades as mandatory.
Even some companies charges much money even between version numbers

But each time a new major version is there. I loose my property of downloading new upcoming filters cause i cant update to new trial version instead of my working older version. I tried installing new trial versions, getting filters downloaded, copying filters, uninstalling new trial, reinstalling older full version but voela, Filters have new hierarchy and now it wont open in older versions.
I have 3 reward points and i am looking to buy a copy by sparing, but i have to wait till FF3 comes cause if i buy this version, it will soon be outdated after FF3 comes to launch.
I think if lifetime upgrade is not provided, downloading filters capability should be there to old versions or at least we should be able to exchange filters between versions if new features are not used. For example if i created a filter in FF3 which simply modifies a image (no multiple image feature used) I should be able to save filter to any FF3 or FF2 format saurabh.gayali@gmail.com

If you open an ffxml file in Notepad and change <Information major_version="3"> to <Information major_version="2"> the filter will open in Filter Forge 2.0 (of course, provided that it doesn't use any v3-specific components).
This is not documented and not supported but should work.

I got my points for a lifetime upgrade a few weeks ago. I haven't made that many filters since I got FF and most were done since 2.0 so it's definitely possible and in my humble opinion easy to get a life time upgrade to FF.
Take the time come up with five cool filters, upload them and wait. Be glad there is a path to lifetime updates.
Most software companies are not nearly so generous. FF is one of the most useful tools out there, that you can get new versions for free or even achieve a lifetime update is above and beyond what any other tool half as useful will do for you. colin Fizgig

So, I did that, and I tried to cash in 3 credits for a copy of FF 4.0 (because I bought 1.0 and upgraded to 2.0 and then didn't get further)
But I haven't gotten the serial number, and my mail to the support last week hasn't yet been answered. What now?

Hang in there I've used Filterforge for years and find the people behind the product most helpful. I'm sure you'll get a response soon.

Like any software, lifetime upgrades should definitely be free, especially when it costs this damn much & when the users have contributed so much to it, regardless of whether or not they qualified for a free copy. I understand that major upgrades take a lot of work, but that's why you find new customers. Having to pay for a new version of something is ridiculous, Adobe is no exception, and honestly their new CC cloud system is even worse. Sure, it might be more possible to pay a little at a time, but eventually you'll be spending way more than you ever would have if you'd just saved up the amount over time & bought it outright....

uglyboys, have you tried using the built-in filter library? I always use it instead of the website. It allows me a way easier, quicker & more simple method of getting filters anyways. That shouldn't cause you any issue with opening the filter & not having it go to the right version....I had FF3 & FF4 when it was in beta, both installed & never had an issue. If I didn't understand you right though, sorry. Not sure if I got it.
