Matching Formulas
Many noise types are based on the same underlying formulas, thus they will line up if made the same size. You can match up for example a Cell and Pyramid noises to come up with something like: ![]() Match Formulas.ffxml |

Detect Object
How would you find separate letters in a line of text and apply a different effect (such as color) to each? ![]() The filter detects a clean vertical separation and creates a "ramp" at each, which is used as a horizontal offset map, thus allowing a different color to be spread (somewhat) evenly over each separate object. (This, of course, fails miserably if there are no separate objects.) If anyone can figure out a way to separate them in more than one direction, let me know! ![]() Color separate objects.ffxml |

Yes, thanks.
I could probably even figure out how to do it for lines of text, but where it really gets me is how isolate a bunch of completely randomly shaped objects placed in random locations. In essence, I would like to end up with each object with a different flat gray level -- sort of an "index number" -- on it. As far as I can figure, it would involve some repetitive function, which would get real slow real fast (pun intended). Whatever the answer is, I doubt it is going to be very simple and straightforward. |

Oh, cool. I am trying to figure out a way to apply textures to the "3D" image. It is rather tricky. I have figured out a way to do "planar mapping", but it is pretty limited. Here is an attempt at cubic mapping, which is far from a workable state, but nonetheless shows some promise. Here I had to manually slant two of the three planes to get them to align. It should be automatic to be user-friendly, but I'm sure there is some way to make it happen. Also, it should be very easy to assign different textures to different objects once the mapping is correct. (The front face is not aligned, as it is really the cut-off section of the full cube) ![]() |

As you may have guessed, this was done by unspherizing a texture, then smudging for depth and spherizing the result. (A little more involved than that, but that's the basic idea).
Blurring the line between 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional... |

Wait WAIT. Here's something big for you: if you can make an astroid field you will win my heart for the rest of FilterForge eternity. But even if you don't.... (I really laughed and had a huge smile on my face when I saw that) I'm super happy about seeing some crazy objects made with just the smudge component.

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() My great congratulations for you to be able to make things like this 3D mapping using FF filters like for example this ones shown here ___________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________ PLEASE, PLEASE, Does this mean that the Smudge 3D could be used to convert filters into 3D shapes like this one ? __________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________ For example, could the awesome and excellent Crystals by Skybase be used to make this kind of 3D shapes ? |

![]() And a more crazy idea that I just had is that if it could there be a way to make 3D cubes like the ones you have already done (shown above) BUT using this to apply the Vladimir's Crysta texture to texturing in 3D the sides of the cubes, so they would look in the same way as the well done sphere you have done. Perhaps this would be too much work for FF to make and render ![]() SLOW ? Perhaps the bad side of this excellent and well done Smudge 3D thing you have done would be probably that it will be slow. Is this Smudge 3D very slow? How much ? at least for a 2000 x 2000 render. |

YES, YES!!! Will us plain and simple mortals play with FF Gods things or we are not allowed to do it and is reserved just for the masters that can use this and is a private thing ![]() ![]() It would be really good to know HOW this Smudge 3D works, how is done, and how can be used for making such awesome and amazing things as shown above. |

What I do is go to where the image is stored on the forum page and then depending on the browser you are using with the right mouse button select "copy image adress" or "copy image link" and then you get this link http://www.filterforge.com/upload/for...20city.jpg and then you paste it into the the image code of FF Forum ![]() |

Sharandra, Glad you found the way to do it and sorry for confusing the images of "the city"
I hope that Indigo Ray or ThreeDee could share a snippet, a filter or a tutorial showing HOW this very well done, interesting and useful Smudge 3D works and that we could also be able to try it if they want to share it with us. |

One question
How could this shown here below in the ball be showing the stick in a flat surface and still be 3D ? ![]() Convert this Ball into a flat surface like this one below here ![]() And with shadows according to the height of each stick or cube as in other filters I suposse you can unspherize the ball but do not know how to do it. Thanks very much |

By combining the two... It's not all that exciting, though, since the Smudge method creates artifacts, and you have to render the image at larger size and then resize to make it presentable (like was done here). ![]() |

Hey Graig! Had some spare time, so what's a man to do...?
Now this version is more exciting; it is a Simple filter, all lighting has been faked, so there are less artifacts and it renders faster. I still had to render at 2x size to make it look good, but now I don't have to wait forever for the render. ![]() |

Well, with the new Spherical 3D Displacement Previewer by ThreeDee you really can make if you want an asteroid field very realistic as I have tried it and you can see some very realistic examples in this direct link of the thread So I think that he has won your heart, hasn´t he ? This below is some asteroids I have made with the ThreeDee filter (see the thread above for more) ![]() ![]() And modifying the source maps of the filters you can get very different asteroids to fill your own asteroid field |
