Filter Forge 8 greatly simplifies the backup process by allowing you to compress filters and settings into a single archive file and restore it later. Previously the procedure was fairly upsetting: you had to dig into hidden depths of your user profile and copy a folder with an inconspicuous name, and the situation could get even worse in case of a system crash. Well, it is no more: just select Tools > Backup Filters and Settings from the Filter Forge menu.

Can I back up my filters from Filter Forge 8 and restore them to a newer version?

Sure you can! We will always do our best to ensure new Filter Forge versions are backwards-compatible. Please note this doesn't work the other way: you can't restore a backup from a later version into an older one.

Can I use the backup tool to transfer everything from Windows to Mac or from Mac to Windows?

Definitely. All filters and settings are fully cross-platform.

What happens with my existing filters when I restore a backup?

All existing filters and settings will be replaced with those from the backup file. There is no way to merge two sets of filters. If you have to reinstall Filter Forge from scratch we recommend you restore your backup before loading any filters from the website.

What is included in the backup?

In other words, everything inside the %APPDATA%\Filter Forge\ folder on Windows or ~/Library/Application Support/Filter Forge/ on macOS.

Is there something that is not included?

We only back up filters in the default location. If you store filters in custom storages outside the 'My Filters' folder, you need to back up them manually.
