Congratulations for this filter. It is very well done. I really could not believe it when you posted the first example you have shown in this thread --> Romancing the Gorilla by Carl
I like much how is done, and is simple, effective and fast and very good result can be had easily. Here is an example This the original source ![]() and here is the SAME one after Morgantao´s Shadow and Highlight adjustment. ![]() As you can see it keeps very well the whites and greys untouched while raising the shadows very well. |

Thanks SpaceRay!
![]() Hey, look - my filter has it's own thread, we don't have to litter Carl's thread with tests of my filter ![]() |

Glad you like it guys
![]() I'm looking for a way to adjust the midtones, as SpaceRay mentioned is possible in Photoshop. So far what I've found is either way too complex, or doesn't work very well, or mostly the combination of both... But I'm still on it ![]() |

I have seen that you have included the Level and Hue and saturation components but have not given any control over these ones, so:
Is there a reason why this does not have controls at least for saturation and black and white point? Would be bad in some way or could modify the result if you add this settings to the filter ? As these are masked it would only affect to the area that the controls are put and not to the whole image You know much better than me about this, and that is why I am asking. I am not really suggesting that you put them in your filter, I am asking why you did not include them. Thanks very much |

SpaceRay, that's an exelent question.
The main reason I left the levels controls out of the user's reach is because they are set to the optimum values. Just like the bezier curve, it's an integral part of the specific correction I wanted. As you said, as the levels are masked, they will only affect either the highlights or the shadows. The problem now is the midtones, so adding more controls to the shadows and highlights won't help much, and will only make the filter less easy for the user to control. All this is MY point of view of course, and that doesn't mean it's an ultimate truth ![]() If you find that it could make things better, by all means let me know, and I can allways update the filter! ![]() |

Thanks for your answer. I knew there was a reason to it so this is why I asked, and good to know why you have done it this way.
I will try and see what happens if you add more controls and if this would be helpful or useful or not and will tell you. |

WOW Morgan. This is a real quick way to brighten and adjust shadows and highlights without dragging out the big programs to do this function. Super filter.
![]() Original on the left and render on the right. Really makes photos pop. ![]() |

I totally agree with you Mardar, this is even better than the tools of the others programs because with this filter is done INSTANTLY AND AUTOMATIC, and in the others you must always take some time to move the sliders to get a possible result, and in this one you can SEE it very quick, although the problem comes when you want to render it as FF is slow and is not applied the result quick as in the others tools, but anyway this filter is fast enough as takes less than 30 seconds on a 4500x3500 photo. This makes a great work although I think that would be good to have more controls for saturation, contrast and color balance to make it even better. I have intentionally made a photo MUCH darker and adjusted low the light levels, and this filter did not have any problem to bring them back to normal and without affecting or modifying any part of the image in a bad way, it gets it very well. ![]() |

Here I have another example of where this is useful and is when you have many details especially shades of grey, over white and if you normally use other tools different than Shadow and Highlights you will blow away the details and loose much of the lines and shades.
As you can see this one has much detail and many grey shades in the cubes and is a great problem to lighten it up with levels or brightness, but with this filter is easy to do. You can that the white and grey details are kept well on both parts of the image while boosting the light on the colors on the left. ![]() |

I have used to make this image above the great and awesome filter Cubes by Inujima
![]() And here is the modified version made with this filter. As you can see in this one gives probably a little too much saturation, but this is easy to correct later. ![]() |

Thanks for the complements everybody!
To be honest, if it weren't for Carl's gorilla and SpaceRay's red flower that's been romancing the gorilla, I would never have thought to try this. ![]() |

I have uploaded an advanced version of this filter, with 3 additional controls.
The new version will allow you to control the tone and saturation of the image. I have decided to keep this version as is, and upload the advanced version as a seperate filter, since this version is super simple and less complex. |
