also outwards and not only circular

cool and well done conversion of the source image to this kind of distortions

and the good thing is that it works also for non-square images, as it could be done only for square images as it is a circular effect

Here is the original landscape image made of stripes with FF

and here with preset 1 applied (that means that it has squircles mapping 4)

You can see that it makes a perfect work of joining all the stripes in an ellipse

and as said above, it can also do it outward using preset 3 (that means that it has squircles mapping 1)

But also can be created the effect without any distortion and crop the source image with Preset 4 (that means that it has squircles mapping 6)

but also is possible to have a slightly distortion using squircles mapping 2

and the same as above here but with more curvature on the left and right sides using squircles mapping 7

using squircles mapping 8 is similar to using squircles mapping 4 (both make a perfect squircle circular effect) but it does it in a slightly different way
See that the spaceray name (bottom left) is not in the same way as the one on the second post above

So it will depend on what result you like most from 4 or 8 ( the difference is that 4 is squelched and 8 is horizontal)

In post 4 I have put that it does not apply any distortion, but this is not true, as it uses a slight distortion, sorry that I have seen it later.

I want to thanks also to Rachel for including the notes inside the filter and show the complex math that is used for this clever and well done filter

Additionally and alternatively, if you are using only square images and want to convert it to other shapes than circular, you can also use Shapify v1.5 By uberzev but it does not work on landscape images as it does with this well done filter by Rachel shown here

Here are examples of a 20x20 grid for all of the squircle maps including 2 new ones based on 2-Squircular mapping in an upcoming update.

Thanks very much for showing these square examples with all the possible options to choose with that very good grid where can be seen very clear the effect

Seeing these examples, I got also the idea of mixing the right spherical result (maybe with shadow) with the left result as a background

Yes, exactly this was my idea suggested, well done. I think is cool and good. And you can combine different ones from each of the 5 groups on left and right.

Partial update added today, another update tomorrow to allow Squircles (between square and circles) on all mappings

@Rachel,

I was never able to find your email regarding the squircle math. Is there a link or something you can share here?

Just go the filter webpage https://filterforge.com/filters/16430.html
And look for 2 pdf links toward the end of the section or

Thanks to FF and all FF users for the High Usage award! I was amazed when I realized the squircle pdf's by Chamberlain Fong could be done with gradients and lookup, just in a different numerical space (-1 to 0 to1) vs FF space (0 to 1).

And another example with Rotate Madness squircleized:
