You nailed the 'spherical mapping' on this one. Very nice, especially in variations 6 and 8. I would replace the colored background with a completely transparent alpha though, to tighten things up.

vold, you asked folks to modify your filters/ideas, if they wished. i can see a LOT of possible variants to this one. spoked wheels, roulette table, compass, balls of string/yarn, and so on. nicely done!
If wishes were horses... there'd be a whole lot of horse crap to clean up!
