Here is the first preset in high-detail for comparison.

I really like what the direction your taking this filter, your managing to capture slate tiles pretty damn well.
That being said, my question is are you intending to make them look so thick? Because as it is if you were to think of this in 3D space, those tiles look to be about 1 1/2 to 2 inches thick. |

I intended to make them rather thick, yes, but you have a point. Maybe I should make that thickness tweakable. As (almost) always, this is a work in progress, and I am open to suggestions. Originally, I also intended to implement a random vertical shift for the shingles as well, but that would require drastic rewiring/rebuilding. Currently, I am experimenting with making this thing render faster. With global detail turned down to zero, its still pretty much a slug. ![]() --- Crapadilla says: "Damn you, stupid redundant feature requests!" ;) |

Also, there is a strange repetition of detail happening on every second tile row when rendered for seamless tiling (as seen on all preset renders). The next update will introduce a remedy for this.

Updated. You can now tweak the slate thickness.

Beautiful. The only thing I'd like to see is more natural-colored presets -- blue IMO isn't a 'roofy' color

My reference for this filter... ![]() Since these are more like slates than clay shingles, I thought I might get away with it... ![]() ![]() --- Crapadilla says: "Damn you, stupid redundant feature requests!" ;) |

Then again... maybe I just switch around the colors of the first and second presets in the next update.

The next update will focus on 'Advanced Pattern Repetition Cloaking' technology. For some of the presets with low 'Repeat' values, the crack pattern repeats were just too painful!

picky, picky, picky
![]() oh, and on the slate one, slate is that color but not that texture, generally. slate tends to be a layered type stone, not solid like you have it. it's somewhat like shale in that it splits very easily into sheets, which is why it was used as roofing at times. you can split slate into fairly thin pieces, but it only splits this way in one direction. think of vinyl tiles stacked one on top of another and then pressed together. the bond within each tile is stronger than the bond between each tile. so, you end up with a layered look. so, the first example in this post looks more like a granite than a slate. slate wouldnt be that thick for roofing or siding. but the color does seem right. If wishes were horses... there'd be a whole lot of horse crap to clean up!

I don't know much about roofing or shingles, but it certainly looks incredibly lifelike to me! ^_- Excellent work Crapadilla and the fact that you are working to make it even better is nothing short of inspiring!
Kraellin, you certainly know your building materials ^_^ I would have never noticed all that about how slate and the other materials are unique until I read your write up ^_- -Zephos |

Sweet. Crapadilla, I like the work you put into giving them a grain and worn feel. On the more aged-looking ones, I almost wonder if I might slip on a shingle (missing shingle slider? Haha) and fall off the roof.
![]() Seriously, I was looking at some texture packs that architects use, and they were DRY AND BORING. Something like this could breathe more life into the staid, plain vector art currently (and unfortunately) out there. I'm enjoying using Filter Forge to create http://torley.com/textures |

Dilla, those are really cool!!! Wouldn't it be sweet if FF had a 3D environment to do things like this

No, that's what dedicated 3D applications are much better at... ![]() ![]() I'd rather FF remained in its own area of expertise! --- Crapadilla says: "Damn you, stupid redundant feature requests!" ;) |

Yeah, Vlad said the same thing to me when I've mentioned it before
![]() ![]() I was thinking big.....retaining everything as sub-environments within FF.....using PS, PSP, etc as editor plugins to FF......and doing the same with 3D, animators, etc.....basically having the ability to put the whole "shopping mall" customized right inside of FF.....making it the center of the graphics universe ![]() Okay, first we'll need unlimitted financial resources and an army of programmers..... ![]() ![]() Steve

oh that's just cool, dilla
![]() ya know, i tend to agree about keeping FF as FF, but i was thinking recently, since i've been playing with gtkradiant here lately, that 'shaders' might have a really good use in FF. shaders are basically scripts added to an image, object, or texture to give it more parameters and be less static. like, you could have a picture of a starfield, but you could add a shader to make the stars twinkle. that could be very cool! If wishes were horses... there'd be a whole lot of horse crap to clean up!
