it seem beautiful after film camera but will take a bit of study to understand how to use it to its best smile;) you know digital camera I'll have to pick your brain - I notice it does bracketing so have refined that article we discussed about hdri smile:)

The 40D is not idea for HDRI but it will work. You will need to take a series of bracketed shots to get it to work. With a little practice it is something you can get fast at.
I really like that it has a 14bit converter. It's a good thing you have a fast computer because your files are going to be huge.

Increasing the a/d resolution by two bits increases the number of values used to represent the analog data from 4096 to 16384. With a low noise sensor like the Digic III this can result in clearer detail in the shadows as well as more accurate tonal gradation.

Ron Bigelow has a collection of excellent articles on general photography here and specifically why to shoot raw here.
If you have time, take a look at some of his photography. He's the man. smile:)

Craig, maybe you should consider getting one of these 40Ds - they have 2 stop brackets.smile:devil:

Notice that after enhancement that the whites are still white, the grays are still gray, the greens are still green etc. Try that with RGB. smile:-p

tempting, i grant you, but i'm not going slr for now. too much cost, too much junk to carry around, and i've already got an slr, film type smile:) no, for what i do these days, a carry-around-anywhere is what i need and want. 1 piece of equipment (though i do keep a tripod in my glove compartment smile:) ) and i wear it on my belt. that's really all i want for right now. but i am still drooling over the panasonic fz18, though that's not an slr either.

your images look good, ron smile:)

Maybe I'm the exception but I do not carry any junk. Ok, I carry an extra battery and SD card, and sometimes I carry a normal, but mostly I just carry the camera and a general purpose zoom. I also have a small tripod I like to take but it sounds like we end up carrying about the same amount of hardware. The costs for the prosumer like the 40D is not that bad even compared to the fz18 - especially if your patient and willing to bargain shop. Plus the dSLRs have point and shoot modes if you do not want to go manual. smile:)

actually, i prefer manual, on both the focus and the zoom. the auto-focus crap often misses what i'm really after. but i can get that on the fz18.

as for 'junk', i was just referring to all the stuff i used to carry around, lenses, filters, tripod, bag, lens cleaning, even extra lighting at times and that doesnt even count the film, color and b&w. yes, this was my old slr film days, but i see the same thing happening if i go slr again, digital or not. the fz18 has that nice 18x optical which is roughly equivalent to a 28 to 500 mm zoom lens. that's all i need in a lens these days, well, unless i wanted to do macro again smile:)

yeah, the 2 +/- ev level bracketing looks good there. but i can bracket manually if i need to.

as an aside, i've been playing with my kodak z885 quite a bit lately and trying out some more of the fancy features. of note is the panorama shooting. this surprised me at how well this worked. i tried a couple shots of panorama left to right. very impressive and very easy to use and the camera did all the stiching internally and did it well. i was impressed.

what i dont like about the current digitals is no manual zoom, no f-stop settings labeled as such, crappy focus (on the kodak z885. this one needs a manual focus) and the bracketing on cameras with bracketing, you often cant set the bracket divisions. they are fixed.

but, i still wouldnt want to go back to film smile:)

It's still a bit disappointing. Canon could have easily made it a six image bracket instead of two. They know very well what they are doing, they want to make the serious HDRI shooter pay for the pro model - an extra $5000.

no manual zoom

I have not used a non-manual zoom but it seems like the most important thing about an electronic zoom would be the response of the control - a slider would be nice. But I agree, if it does not behave precisely it would be worse than useless.

using auto

The rule in old school photography was to get it right inside the camera. That has changed with digital photography. Of course it helps to do as much as possible with things like lighting and composition before snapping but with digital it is often better to place the part of the scene that you want to record, on the part of the histogram that the sensor is best at recording then move it back to where it looks best in post. This results in some awful looking images until the work is finished with PS and FF. Auto mode will not help with that kind of shooting.

Just point the camera at something and watch the indicator. smile:) In fact the 40D may have spot metering? I wish I had spot metering. smile:( I like to take a shot and study the histogram. It's a good idea to learn to know where on the histogram the relevant info is. Like being able to tell a face from a table in the same scene just on the histogram.
