Thankyou Persidio those are kind words I always wonder what things people using the filters do with them - maybe FF could start up some kind of competition to entice users to post usage of filters in a user gallery with a description of filter/s used [ sorry I won't use the word user again ] Quote |

Persidio wrote:

That was intentional - there's 12 alternative photo effects modes which you can select from which you can overlay in any combination Shadow - Grunge - Marks, I felt by keeping to the 12 corrosponding preset it would clarify without confusing What I did was to forget to put it in the description - so thankyou for reminding me

I want to do something gothy just to use this filter on it ala Silent Hill style. I need to get back to making pictures and stop fooling around with FF so much.
Yeah, like that will happen.
Yes, very rough, very rugged, and with a nice gothy slant. I think at this rate you and I will be picking out floral china patterns soon.

Now wait a minute here. I know I’m slow but I think I get the implication. Is snuggling up to me supposed to be analogous to a kitten getting its head electrocuted? I can bring flowers too but I’m not certain what correct response is to being compared to a lethal discharge of electricity. @ronviers

Hey ahimsa - When you’re selecting a model what do you look for? I know you will want something appropriate for the project but what about your style. What for you makes a model desirable? @ronviers

If it's an animal model it needs to look like the animal and be able to be posed like the real animal. Some models don't have very good curves and you can see a straight area between points where it should be rounded and that is a major turn off for me. How materials that are applied to the model look is also important.
Realism is important to me, even in the fantasy models. They need to look like they would look if actually real. If I can see the points where a smooth curve should be, I don't want it. If the proportions are wacky, I don't want it. If mats won't apply well or get stretched wrong when you pose the model, I don't want it.

ahimsa’s rules for minimum model usability:
Models will look and move realistically.
Areas that should be curved will be curved.
Materials application will be considered throughout the model creation process.
Models will match their surroundings.
Understood.
I will print this out and tape it to my monitor. I do not know about the materials thing yet but once I figure out what they are I will keep them in mind throughout the design process.
If you think of any more official rules let me know.
Thank you.

Rawn would be the best person here to talk to about these things as he actually does them. I just use models. I don't know how to make them, only texture them. Speaking of which, some models are a real pain in the butt to texture.

Why is that? I notice there are two basic types of models that I am working with; NURBS and polygonals. I do not know if a NURBS model stays a NURBS model or gets converted to something else later. When you are selecting a model do you have do decide if you want a NURBS or a polygonal? Is one easier to texture than the other or are they the same? What app do you use to apply the textures? Have you heard of zBrush? Are the materials already applied when you select them? Do you apply the textures on top of the materials or are they integral? @ronviers

I use PSP to apply the textures to the maps.
The problem with some models is that the way the maps turn out it is very hard to apply the texture to it because it curves all over the place and just makes a mess. I don't really know how to explain this well. Again, this is an area that Rawn is far more qualified to ask. Or you could go to the DAZ forums and talk with loads of people there who make models and do textures. I can't do the really great texture jobs like some people there can.

You're welcome. There are a lot of very helpful and far more knowledgeable people there on this subject. DAZ sold us members Hexagon 2, a modeling program that used to cost 100s for just $1.99, so there are a lot of people who are learning to model.

I prefer the scratches to be on, to me it adds a kind of Bohemian or East European feel. Could those have been the Czars dogs? The model has beautiful eyes anyway but I really like the haunting quality the filter adds on 12gr3.jpg - it has the mood of being painted/captured towards the end of a long Russian winter.

I do have a couple that I've been working on from time to time.....of no personal use to me, but solely intended to achieve an "elusive" Editor's Pick....my last personal challenge here Steve
