I have two versions of this, and the question is which one you guys and gals like better...

A) The current library version

Pros:
- Can use the 4 different formulas of the Cells component (of which I like 2 and 4 especially, as they create nice mosaics).
- Offset-based "edge-detect" creates grout of even width.

Cons:
- Offset based "edge-detect" needs a Blur component to create beveled edges. It is slow and often creates strange tile shapes.
- Needs 'anti-aliased sources for bitmap components' active to look good on edges. Bad for high-res output.

B) The alternate version (attached below)

Pros:
- Uses curve profile mapped Stones components, hence completely Blur-free on the height-tree, faster & more interactive.
- Better high res output.
- Chiseled edges look much better.

Cons:
- Stones component based, therefore grout widths are more uneven.
- Cells formulas are absent, hence Mosaic Styles look less appealing even with layered Stones components.
- Mosaic Styles 2-4 look like high 'Shattered Tiles' settings.

Overall, I feel that the alternate is the cleaner version, but I like the mosaics of the library version!

ah, i like that one. i especially like that each paving stone has its own shading/irregularities. makes it MUCH more believable.

WoW! I was just thinking of something like this the other day.
Hats off Dilla! smile:)

Forgot to mention this in the tips of this filter:

Activate the 'Anti-alias sources for bitmpap-based components' option in "Tools > Options... > Rendering" to get the most quality out of this filter!

Hi Dilla,

I'm a "how does it look?" person, so the original is my preference.

The circular ones are looking very interesting. Makes me wanna try circular tiling with that one, which would make the tiles consistent size.

Now we just need to figure out how to make mosaic tiling that follows the contours of an image...

If you mean them images of the circle and part circle patterns, I really like them ones smile:D, high chance of a HU with that I think.

Yup, me too. Getting the look right is most important.

However, there is also the aspect of elegant filter construction to consider. In the original filter a lot of 'mac-guyvering' is taking place to get the grout and height map to work, and - I just can't help it - that small-radius blur always feels like a jury-rig to me! smile:|

dilla, i had to look at the guts on this one and i've got a couple questions. why all those inverts right after the cells component and why the duplicate cells component? were these just for organizing the filter better? because, i didnt notice any time in rendering added back by removing them.

and the other question is related to the first. i know that you can add any number of image components to a filter and it wont add time. i remember vladimir explaining this quite a while back, but is this true with some of the other components as well, like the inverts and extra cells you added?

The Inverts just serve as sample cache components to cache the 5 different sets of coordinates acquired from the Cells component (the original coordinates and those generated by the 4 Offsets that constitute the edge-detection for the grout). I guess it might not have affected speed that much if I removed them, but I also like how they organize the flow of data.

[Generally, I found that using Inverts to organize the flow of data does not affect render speed in a positive or negative way, but it can lead to faster filters under certain circumstances (due to sample caching). If you want the details, I suggest you re-absorb the 'DOs and DONTs' thread or ask Sphinx or Vlad.]

Vladimir Golovin wrote elsewhere:
The sample cache is located at the output, not at the inputs of the component. Every component stores the coordinates and the value of the last calculated sample, and if the next sample has the same coordinates the component returns the cached value instead of evaluating the sample.

why the duplicate cells component?

The two Cells components are on different branches of the filter tree, consequently I used duplicates. Remember that the height map branch gets sampled three times more often than the other branches. Also, the two Cells are each going into different "sets" of offsets/noise distortions (one for the grout, the other for the tiles surfacing), so sample coordinates are different on the two branches. Using the same Cells component for both would likely lead to this component being (re-)sampled much more often (since coordinates change so often), and thus likely to a slower filter.

well, i removed 12 inverts, 2 cells and one chaffs and managed to reduce the time from 3:44 to 3:29. lol. so, was hardly worth it and i might have changed the stone surface texture a tad, though not much.

i originally removed 10 inverts and one cells and it did nothing, so i'll assume those inverts i removed were mostly sort of organizers, since none of them had controls or were checked.

it really is a great filter. best of the paving stone types i've seen and i think i'll quit messing with it before i do something untoward smile:)

This is much better than the "abominations" that I had created for it......much faster, more efficient, half the components, etc.....and did I mention that yours looks better??? ..... smile:| ..... smile;) smile:D

Sorry, I know that this was in 2008, but I am wondering if the reference of both Constantin and Crapadilla was to make reference to the filter Radial Mosaic Tiles or there was another different project or thing, as the sample shown by Constatin is very good and well done and would be good to have something like this in FF.
