THANKS to everyone for such nice comments and positive feedback! smile:)smile:)

Suggestions to improve it are very welcome! smile;)
(e.g.: I had a hard time trying to figure controls names, and feel that I'm still far from more intuitive ones...)

Small details can be increased even more playing with our beloved "Size, pixels" slider while tweaking Edge related sliders. Final results will depend on input image size (Reduced preview can trick you sometimes).

I've submitted an updated version with some new features!
New "Shades Grain" controls add texture do shades/midtones and can reander more uniform grainy look, check example below (preset #3 few tweaks):

Another new feature (I would call it "experimental workaround") is the option "Fix Solid Dark Areas", that attempts to remove some dark ugly areas that appear in images with large chunks of pure black pixels -- example below.

If someone could suggest a more elegant solution to this problem, it would help a lot! smile:)

One thing: Correct NEW feature name is "Shades Texture" and not "Shades Grain" as stated above. Sorry for the mess -- Unfortunately, it seems that I can't edit previous posts to fix that smile:(

In the meantime, another example of "Shades Texture" feature, "Fix Solid Dark Areas" is unchecked:

You been reading my mind ... The image mix with all combine modes is a perfect addition to this filter. Saves me lots of time and I don't have to do a bunch of messing with Photoshop layers. I have been fooling with preset 6 ( at least that was my count) and tweaking it every which way. So many possibilites, so little time. Another great improvement to this fine filter ....

I guess FF must not have the latest version of your filter in the download slot. I just downloaded it and what I'm looking at does not have the blending features.

Don't know if a can do that, Gene smile:D
In fact, I noticed that most users of this filter were doing some extra post work using layers and blending modes on Photoshop. So why not make it easier, inside FF?
And the good part is that you still can mess with layers in Photoshop if you really want/need more control.

Couldn't help it, just had to mess with it. Just love what you can do with this filter. I upped saturation and did some color balance to get some rosey skin tones and blue shadows .....

Interesting and perhaps a need for better communications in FF2. When I launch, FF automatically asks me if I want to check for updates and I say Yes. It says everything's hunky-dory so I think ... silly me ... that this also includes filters. Selecting Check for Filter Updates from the menu found the update for your filter.

Thanks for the suggestion.

And finally here is the original photo used for all the above excellent effects and although you see a black background it really is not so black and there more unseen textures in background that the filter shows.

And I have to say that as said all this are without any post processing, but this would even be more beautiful if processed more with other special filters I know from other companies in Photoshop.

Congratulations again for the versatile and great effects that have so many variations and different effects that are great and well done and make perfect selections and edge detection to get the best final result.

And I have not even tried yet to change the settings and mixed in my own style !!!!

Thansk very much for this great filter, with lots of potential and creativity.

Haven't seen these, SpaceRay!
Lots of GREAT examples!!

Thank you for your comments! I appreciate! smile:)
Actually, I was planning "Sketch My Pic Up 2", with lots of new features, but decided to wait for FF3, so it will include the brand new Edge Detector as well as other detection methods (this version actually uses only one!).

Meanwhile, one nice tip:

Severeal passes of the filter using different can generate interesting results:

example below:
- 1st pass: custom settings
- 2nd pass: preset #3

"All Pixels" is slower, but renders smooth midtones in some cases, specially if some high "Shades Texture" values are set.

Another example below concerning the use of AA's "All Pixels" option, with respective settings:

Hi lipebianc. I think you made a very smart choice in using grain as your method of fill. Also the way you implemented colors for paper and sketch, plus allowing blending of the original image. This allows your filter to work in a variety of photos, and create a variety of moods.

One suggestion. You have one pre-processing setting, and I like what you did, upping the brightness like that fixes a specific kind of problem. But I've been running tests in Photoshop on ways to improve my own filter, and I've found it helpful to have full control of brightness and contrast on the photo before it is converted to a sketch. I've only tested it on a few photos, but so far it seems helpful. Of course, tests in Photoshop don't always match implementation in Filter Forge, and I haven't tested it in FF yet.

Anyway, looking at all the great results posted here, it looks like you have a real winner.

Hello, Andrew!
Thank you very much for the constructive comments!
Your suggestion is totally welcome!
At the time, that 'brightness trick' was a quick workaround based on the very little knowledge I had back then...
Probably I won't update this filter anymore, but I'm planning a version 2 with more contour/edge detection modes, also using the new EDGE DETECTOR component, as well as incoporating new features and your PRE brightness/contrast suggestion!
Best regards!

Gad, I didn't realize there was a new edge detector. I need to pay more attention.

and your PRE brightness/contrast suggestion!

After more testing, I ended up using PRE brightness and PRE gamma. Thing is, though, my color method tends to be faint, so I need gamma more than your method does.

Anyway, I'll keep an eye out for your next filter.
