This is something I'm struggling with. I can't seem to get the stones to look the way I want them to. The obvious solution is to blur the stone noise component a bit and then do some curve adjustments. This works OK, but when it's all said and done, I end up with either really sparse stones or blobs of stones that are all coagulated together. I've attached a simple filter to demonstrate what I mean. I want to generate stones like these, but closely packed together and not overlapping. Any suggestions?

Hmm, pretty close, but a bit too uniform (especially when I try to make small stones). Thanks for the suggestion, though. I wish the stones component had just a few more parameters. Like if you could make it act like the tile component with bevels, curves, mortar and whatnot, you could do so much more with it.

i kinda like your stone shapes and sizes. you might try adding an offset at about 8 / -8 and run that into a blend with the original into foreground and the offset into the background.
also, i played around with this a bit, using some of the earlier snippets posted here. it's not that good, but might give you some ideas. curvedstonetest1 rev 1b.ffxml If wishes were horses... there'd be a whole lot of horse crap to clean up!

The problem with blending multiple rock sources together is that you end up with overlap, which I want to avoid.

yeah, i thought that might be the case. i was just hoping that maybe something in the one i posted would spark something to give you a more elegant solution.
could you post what you have so far? that last one is pretty good. If wishes were horses... there'd be a whole lot of horse crap to clean up!

Nice effort all around guys but there really should be a way to achieve this effect that isn't so convoluted. (Paging FF Devs)

thanks, jit.
i had a play with this, but so far i dont think i've achieved what you're after. i'm assuming what you're asking for when you say you want to increase the density is, to increase the density at that sized stone. as for the shape, what were you hoping to get if not what you've already got. frankly, i think this is very good. pebbled paving stone is very much like what you have. but if you're looking for more uniform, rounded, smoothed stone, i couldnt quite get this yet. here's one pre-set i came up with, but i'm not sure it really does what you want yet. ![]() If wishes were horses... there'd be a whole lot of horse crap to clean up!

Nice job, jitspoe (on that second test). I don't know how to improve it, but as it is, it's probably already a good texture for the library.

Kraellin: Not bad. That's pretty much what I'm going for on the density.
Oh, and I made this beach filter when I couldn't get the look I was going for earlier. It might be of interest if anybody hasn't seen it yet: http://www.filterforge.com/forum/read...1&TID=1752 That's ultimately what I'd like to get the stones to look like, but what we've got here is acceptable. |

yeah, i couldnt alter the stones shape that much. i can somewhat, but not precisely. and with the density raised, it's VERY had to keep them from butting up against each other.
basically, i didnt add or remove any of your components. all i did was alter some of the settings. i can post what i have, if you like. If wishes were horses... there'd be a whole lot of horse crap to clean up!
