Is considered bad submitting updated and modified (with additional features) filters using others authors filters to the FF Library?
Should be asked first to the author if he/she allows to update and modify his/her filter? Of course that first thing I would do is to credit the author for his work, and the last thing I want is to go against someone using his work without knowing if it possible and right to do it. I want to respect authors work and make things right. With this I do not want to make benefit of others people work in any way, this is not my intention, and I am not searching for this, my intention is to update and create new upgraded and updated filters to offer the FF users a new fresh way of using old filters in a new way, and an alternative would be to send the new filter to the author so it could be submitted at his/her name I have seen that there are many Filter Forge 1.0 and 2.0 filters that they were done of course with the available components that was for that version, and now having FF 4.0 could benefit much if they could be updated to ADD more features and things to the filter that could be useful and interesting. Also there are some FF 4.0 filters like Glowing Spiral by Kochubey that could benefit from having more source shapes and other additional features that could expand and make it even better than it already is I TRY ALWAYS TO RESPECT AUTHOR USAGE RANK REWARD When using FF filters that I have downloaded from the FF online library, I always try to use the original factory version so the author can earn and benefit from the hard work of making it and get his deserved usage rank rewards, only when is really needed I decide to make the filter for myself with something that is missing or I would want to have. AUTHOR DOES NOT WANT OR HAVE TIME TO DO IT Maybe also the author is now busy and does not want or have time to update it, or does not want to take the time to make a finished new filter to be submitted to the library AUTHOR IS MISSING AND DO NOT MAKE ANYMORE FILTERS OR UPDATE THEM I have seen that many times that some people have created a lot good filters and then some time later they leave filter forge and do not ever publish a filter again, and some of this could have been done in FF 1.0 or FF 2.0 and could be made better now in FF 4.0 but the author will not do it NEW IDEAS THAT THE AUTHOR HAS NOT THOUGHT Also there are sometimes that I see a filter and have a new idea about how would it be if this filter could have this or that additional option or feature that would make it even better, and although I could suggest it to the author, he/she does not have time or does not want to add it in his own filter, but maybe could allow to make a variant alternative of the filter. UNFINISHED FILTERS AVAILABLE ONLY IN THE FORUM I have seen that there are many excellent filters also available ONLY inside the forum and not available in the FF online library, and sometimes this is because the authors do not want or have to polish, clean and create the presets and needed things to be able to submit it in a good way to the library SNIPPETS AND FILTERS PARTS I know that snippets are filters to help you create your own filters, and that you can sometimes use parts of others author filters to create your own different filter does not have relation to the original filter and makes different things. Thanks for any comments you may have about this topic and know what is your point of view |

Here's how I deal with it. (Note: nothing here is official)
1. Modifications / updates go into the commentary of the original filter. Reason 1: High usage ranks are a motivation for some people. If I uploaded a modified version of a filter to the library, I wouldn't deserve that high usage rank. (I don't know what other people are thinking of but I think most people are relaxed about that. It's just that I still find it kinda difficult to simply just accept high usage ranks that somebody else should have earned.) Reason 2: It really just keeps the conversation going for that filter when you put stuff into the commentary. It just keeps things concise I guess. 2. HYPER modifications are probably more ok for submission. Anything where you significantly modify so much to a degree that the original material is unrecognizable is more than fine. Reason: I as an author wouldn't care after some point. As a common courtesy I'd mention authors involved but that's about it. 3. Simple modifications are probably best in the commentary rather than a submission as a full filter. Reason: I can make 100 tiny variations of a filter you make. It doesn't contribute more to the library's richness / wealth, where it'd rather end up saturating a large portion with a similar filter. It's probably best to keep simple mods to a minimum anyway given posting even 3 or 4 of similar material already doesn't do much. But it's also up to the situation of things. Either way, I'm just following some basic thoughts. The library is pretty open so I also wouldn't be afraid to just mod something and I honestly wouldn't bother asking permission, I'd just leave stuff in the commentary. That's basically "the nice approach". |

SpaceRay, please note new filters must be sufficiently different from other filters in the library.
