Until now the filters were divided in two main categories.

The first to make textures ( characterized by creating a filter that didn't involve any pre-selected image ).

The second to create effects to apply on an image.

I'm trying to work on a mix of both. My idea is to start from an image + some textures, combining them together, then applying some effects ( after or during the combination ).
The result would add to the image characteristics that before the image didn't have, so it wouldn't be an effect.
At the same time it wouldn't be a texture because, in a more or less clear way, it would contain a starting image.

I know it would be impossible for FF to create a new category, so I will put these filters in the "Effects --> Misc"

Example :

The following filter breaks the original image in circles and sectors.
It applies to every circle constructed parts ( as thorns, blades, etc. ) or deletes and replaces the original image in that particular circle/sector with a texture.
Then it combines all together, applying effects to single circles or to the whole final result.

( This is only a low resolution image. Also the filter is still under construction ).

Great idea and results Ramlyn! There's no reason why filters have to be one or the other and combining the two types could have endless possibilities!

I think the thing with this is that it's gonna be a really niche category or a category too broad. It's niche because a successful submission to that category would require heavy manipulation of the input image, and that it'd have to have some textural element to it. It'd be a broad category because we really don't have a "law" on what defines "textural" and what defines "just an image effect" and there's no measurement of that either. So technically I'd be able to submit anything to that category and argue that it'd be cool there.

Typically for those kinds of things, the misc category works fine.

The key case and point with "effects" vs "generators" is whether or not the filter has an input. That's really all there is to it. An effect is something that alters the property of an incoming, external input. So at the point you're importing an image, you're making an effect regardless of intention or reason.

Yeah, I got some filters that can produce textures and effects at the same time. But typically I just count those as effects by definition rather than by intent.

By the way, you got some super gory awesomeness haha.

Yes, Skybase. I agree you.
That's why I said "I know it would be impossible for FF to create a new category". There is no way for an automated system to understand the difference between a filter that simply applies an effect to an input image and a filter that instead applies textures + effects to an input image.
This kind of filters will simply stay inside the "Effects --> Misc" group. smile;)

About niche or very broad....
Yes, if only me will so crazy try to create similar filters ( it is a crazy thing, because some of these filters are very very complex ), it will be just a niche. Ha! Ha!
But, who knows, maybe many others will try.
We've already uploaded most of the effects that could be created with simple filters. From now on, for creating something really new, we may be obliged to think more and more complex filters.
Combining together "textures type" with "effects type" filters could be one way to create completely new results.

True that the Effects > Misc is very broad. Wherever they end up going, hybrid (for a lack of a better word) filters is an idea well worth exploring. It's something I have been playing around with too.
