Hi, As you may have read i would like to use FF as a more general tool for my designing, multiple images for interfaces ect, one thing i would like to have is a filter which takes any shape and give it a smooth gradient, i have worked out how to have a circle or square gradient ect but can't work out how to do it for say a christmas tree type shape ect. Basically it would let you select 2 or more colors and apply this to any shape, this would be useful to me for alot of things like quick cartoon shading ect. Im guessing this is possible and not too hard for some of you guys to make but im having a hard time making anything more than set shape gradients so it would be great if someone could help with this one.

Oh and also, when i say any shape i mean a layer which would start as a solid filled shape on a transparent background, i think theres ways to extract the area but i havent tried this out yet.

Could you post a screenshot or example?

Hmm, nah i don't have any examples really, the picture below uses it but theres a layer over some of it so you can't see the full effect, basically it would be like photoshops layer styles, a inner shadow with no distance so it shades around the shape. Basically that and it would let you select a color.

So basically rather than having 2 gadients mixed to make a square gradient it would just require one module and it could do any shape so no mixing required.

James are you asking for something like Photoshop's layer effects?

Hmmm! I was under the impression that most of the PS layer effects can be easily recreated with the existing tools... smile:)

We need to get a proper simple lighting component to truly emulate the PS layer fx.

+1, but you and I know how the last discussion on that subject was. The chances of seeing this kind of component I understood to be very slim. smile;)

Simple Lighting/Illumination, Shadows and Reflection components would have been a great boon for my recent Aqua Buttons Galore filter (and I think for Simple type filters in general). Instead I had to find ways of faking it, which was quite entertaining. Still, I believe you could recreate most of the PS layer fx, but it wouldn't be any close to being convenient.

It's not quite lighting in the sense that i just want the module to trace the shape and apply a gradient that follows it, lighting would be the next thing that i would want along those lines also though, bevel/emboss or something like that the lighting version would be which puts highlights and shadows together. But yeah this time i just want the simple version so maybe more chance it will appear smile:D

James, take a look at this...

(You can easily replace the noise with a selection for styling specific shapes)

In fact we could try and make an all-in-one 'PS layer fx Emulator' filter working on selections... smile;)

Has anyone ever made a filter that was explicitly designed for selections? How does it look in the library?

I tried experimenting before I saw uberzev's filter (see attachmentmentbelow).

BTW, one filter that might also be of interest with this theme is Thorndracos' SimpleDroplets.

Is there a way to link blur parameters to the resolution of the external image?

They already are. For example a 400x400 and 800x800 image brought into FF and given a blur of 20 will appear identical if both scaled to 200x200 after the initial effect.

Thanks everyone smile:) I knew of course that it could most likely be made using modules, would be great to have default modules to do stuff like that though i think and the same with various other things. smile:D
