Erosion is the removal of solids (sediment, soil, rock and other particles) in the natural environment. It usually occurs due to transport by wind, water, or ice; by down-slope creep of soil and other material under the force of gravity; or by living organisms, such as burrowing animals, in the case of bioerosion.

- According to Wikipedia on Erosion

So here's the story. Imagine this: you're making a terrain map in FilterForge. You want to have the terrain eroded (see image below.) But FilterForge doesn't have that capability yet. (Capability as in creating branching effects across various areas randomly or based on an element.)

How would we go about doing this in the current version of FF?

Example image source: Google Maps

Hmm. See no sample image, but I imagine you mean something along the line of the erosion function in Bryce Terrain Editor?

Well, erosion can look like almost anything in the world. Not just terrain maps.

Of course the best is to create a generic erosion model within FF so that it can be applied to any texture with diverting surfaces.

For example, certain molds grow in a tree-like diverting function. If you study the structure the model flows as if it were erosion.

So in other words there are tons of ways we can use it smile:D

I'm just guessing FF has enough tools for a similar look. Who knows though... maybe I'm pushing the limits.

Let me see if the picture uploads this time.

Here's how it looks in Bryce. Perlin noise before and after eroding.

Even easier to see with a single mound.

Well what I mean is to simulate the same effect within FilterForge because of the benefits that somehow arise from making 1 generic model.

Oh lol.

Yeah... the goal is something that branches outwards from a center source... hmmm

Well I've been doing similar things, I just hope that my method will work somehow.

I'll post it in the future, right now FF crashed.

Some simple erosion algorithm nodes would really help those of us who deal w/ maps!

+1!

This should lead you down the right road, although seeing as FF doesn't use or have access to, say, OpenCL acceleration, I wouldn't recommend it.

YES, it would be very good to have erosion effects, and make probably things like this also to photos http://www.filterforge.com/filters/5075.html

It would be very nice that you could make this kind of images with erosion and degradation and mixing colors.

If you want, in this link there are much more photos

I also need to know how to do this smile:p

I saw pic from Xirja, which are looking pretty much like erosion but she did not tell how she made it.
