This is an old post Filter Forge Flames I was wondering if FF can do some proper decal Flames Like on a Hot Rod Car Hood and Quater Panel. Can this old one from this post be improved to do something more like this branching one?

I worked on that specific effect for quite some time before giving up. It's deceptively complex.
I didn't find an elegant solution to the branching problem. Aspects are similar to a fractal tree which I've done before. But the way the shapes seamlessly merge is hard to achieve when you are just layering existing discreet shapes, which is how I had approached it. The tendrils being so close yet not overlapping is another conundrum. In my opinion FF is not the right tool for the job, although one could brute force that specific image. But if your just going to be manually drawing a bunch of Bezier curves with no way to randomize you might as well use Illustrator or Inkscape. You shouldn't need to have to have a separate filter just to have a different variation like this. ![]() I've attached my original filter from way back if anyone wants to mess with it. Thanks for the reply. Now I don't feel so bad about my own failed efforts to mod this filter to branch flames. It also explains the lack of such an FF filter by others. But then there's "emme" so ya never know.

Yeah, this is definitely a tricky shape to generate if you want to keep it fully procedural. There is a systematic structure to it, but you might need some fairly complex logic to keep it from overlapping itself.
It's an interesting challenge though, might have to try it one day ![]() I'm thinking it might make sense to generate the negative space around the shape instead. It would appear there's less branching that way... But I agree with uberzev, it would be much easier to just design it by hand ![]() |

Thank you! It made me have an idea for a different filter. Let's see how it comes up. |
