I don't understand the difference between these two components. How do you use the "selection" component?
How can I use my own images as the original to create a filter without the generic life preserver becoming dominant in the final outcome?

Selection allows you to obtain a selection from Photoshop to use it in your filter, while Image provides the source image.

I suppose you're using FF as a standalone app, not as a Photoshop plugin. If so, use File > Open Image to open your own pictures.
