There's a button in the top right corner of the main program UI that let's you enter the Filter Editor. Click it and choose 'Create a new filter'. Alternatively, you can go to the menu 'Filter' and choose 'New' or press CTRL+N.

Once you're inside the Filter Editor, go to the Component Bar on the right side. There, select the 'External' category and drag an 'Image' component into the workspace.

To see your own image while filter building you'll have to load it first from the main UI via 'File > New Image', then enter the Filter Editor.

Are you using FF from within Photoshop or in standalone mode?

Yes, I assumed you were. FF is 'locked' on the layer that you have selected in photoshop for as long as it is open, so you'll have to select the correct layer to work on, then launch the filter.

So you opened your image in PS, selected the layer, launched FF via the PS filter menu. The contents of the PS layer should now be displayed in the preview window of the FF main UI!

That is very strange. Try launching FF in standalone mode and loading your image manually.

No wait... you're rendering a texture over your image, so it's not visible, naturally. Try a filter from the effect category...

On the upper left of the main UI, select a filter that is not from the 'texture' category.

In FF or PS?

In FF... if you choose a texture filter from the category list, then that texture filter will be rendered over your image, and you'll just see the texture. Effect filters on the other hand modify your original image in some way, so it should be recognizable 'underneath'.
You can always check the 'Show Original' checkbox above the preview window area to display your original image though. --- Crapadilla says: "Damn you, stupid redundant feature requests!" ;) |

The category list is on the FF main UI, upper left side.

The question is: what do you want to do?
If you want to apply an existing filter, choose one from the categories list, tweak it to your liking and click the apply/save button. If you want to create a new filter click the Filter Editor button as I described above. --- Crapadilla says: "Damn you, stupid redundant feature requests!" ;) |

(If I may pipe in, I believe part of the problem -- although not the entire problem -- is that you are expecting to use an image AS a filter. You can't exactly do that, you can create a filter that looks like that with the internal components of FF and apply it to any other image. In other words, you don't load images into FF to apply them onto other images. It's a bit more involved than that.)

oh sorry... (tried to help but forgot to turn the page)
but while I'm here... What works best for me is go to the Filter Forge website, search for a filter, and click the 'open in filter forge' button. I do this even when I know I already have the filter because it's faster than searching for it yourself. For instance: http://www.filterforge.com/filters/1405.html click the 'open in filter forge' button |

As Sjeiti pointed out, the easiest thing is to check if someone has already done one (such as in this case, there are at least 3 different crumpled paper filters in existence) and use (or modify to taste) the existing one. You'll be amazed what has been done already. Almost every time I think I have come up with something new, someone has already gone and done it! Besides, looking at how others have done something which is similar to what you want to achieve is a good way to learn. Of course, I would suggest studying the manual to get the full benefit of understanding how the program works. But for getting going as fast as possible, check for existing filters. There probably already is one (or more) for most of your needs. |
