How do you get the bevel element of the frame component to follow the contours of a selection? What I mean, is that the bevel element disconnects itself from the width controls when you add an image to those controls, and how do you stop that from happening?

I'll do my best to explain what I'm trying to ask. Before I start though, let me just say that I’m just trying to be thorough, I’m not patronising you or anything like that. Ok, in the components list, under external, you have “Frame”. now that component has three slider controls. The “Frame Width” slider controls how close to the centre the inside of the bevel reaches. The “Margin Width” slider controls how far out from the centre the outside of the bevel reaches. And the “Corners” slider controls how rounded the bevel corners are.
Now, you can connect images to those controls. What I want to be able to do, is connect a black and white image to the “Margin Width” control, and have the outside of the bevel connect itself to the line separating the black and white areas, and the inside of the bevel to connect itself to the centre of each white area.

If I understand you correctly, you need a tool to expand/contract the selection contour. If so, I'm afraid there is no component in FF that allows you to extract the vector outline of the selection.

Maybe you could blur your selection and apply a threshold over it? Something like this:

I'm finding it a little hard to follow, I got as far as connecting the "setalpha" and "gamma"

Check out this snippet, it demonstrates a number of things you may find usefull...

-How the actual shapes are extracted from the source maps. (I reverse engineered this smile8) )
-Why you should use grey (not pure black/white) images as your source maps.
