The first two have been done with gradients only. I'll see whether I can come up with a solution that uses 'tile' components, offsets and gradient masks like the last two.

Hmmm... maybe I should do a snippet that collects all these tilings (and more)... or I'll make one snippet per tiling...

this is the one i was talking about, dilla: http://www.filterforge.com/filters/471.html clever filter and there may be some good ideas in there for your pattern lab.
and isnt 'herringbone' one of the profile items in 'tiles'? If wishes were horses... there'd be a whole lot of horse crap to clean up!

I find it rather odd that only very few filter authors have come up with new (and most importantly: non-kaleidoscopic!) tilings beyond those hard-wired to the 'pavements' component. By just using 'tile' components, blends, gradients and offsets one can achieve many interesting regular surface tilings. Looks like 'tilings' aren't so en vogue these days...

The kaleidoscopes are sufficiently explored, IMHO. Let's see what we can do with profile gradients, offsets and blends instead.
I should've called this thread 'Pavement Lab' instead. That would have made it more clear. ![]() --- Crapadilla says: "Damn you, stupid redundant feature requests!" ;) |

I've been giving myself headaches by reading and trying to understand this stuff... http://www.ics.uci.edu/~eppstein/junkyard/sym.html
So far, my headaches have gotten worse. but maybe someone else, with more patience and less ADD, can find it useful - if you guys aren't familiar with it already. |

these were all from pavement components. at first, when playing around, i had a kaleidoscope in there, as well. but, in the spirit of your lab, i took it out before i saved any images for here. so, this is pavements, offsets, profile gradients, blends and possibly some other stuff, but no kaleids

i'm guessing an overlay and offset on that last one, dilla, yes, no?
and one other thing, since you started these 'labs', that makes you the moderator of sorts. thus, more comments on yours and other's pieces would be nice. yeah, i'm a shameful attention whore, but still... ![]() also, is there any particular direction you'd like to go with these, say, like trying to duplicate a kaeleidoscopic effect without kaleids, or any other thing like that, or are we just in a free form here at the moment? If wishes were horses... there'd be a whole lot of horse crap to clean up!

Actually, I view these 'labs' as open to everyone, and anyone is welcome to comment and/or contribute in any way they feel appropriate. As we have seen with the 'noise lab' thread, the 'labs' may at times take on characteristics of either 'user gallery'-like displays or tips & tricks on filter creation.
As for comments, I will reserve for myself the privilege to remain silent at times, since I may not always have an opinion on everything. Remember, we're experimenting here, and hence judging prematurely must be avoided. It is my intention to explore what is possible, and to see what others may come up with. --- Crapadilla says: "Damn you, stupid redundant feature requests!" ;) |

Below is an example of how I constructed the new 'long herringbone' pavement style. As you can see, it uses tiles, mapped offsets, profile gradients and masked blends.
I'm also attempting to keep these new pavement styles in accord with how they would work as an actual 'bond type' on a pavement component. This means that they must tile seamlessly and work correctly with the size slider. It is also important that they provide the usual pavement component functionality, such as 'mortar width', 'bevel', etc. ![]() --- Crapadilla says: "Damn you, stupid redundant feature requests!" ;) |

I never noticed this one until now...
http://www.filterforge.com/filters/3389.html It might not be the most beautiful filter, but it sure does suggest a direction for Pattern Lab research: painstakingly hand-crafted patterns. oh my lord, he made all those 'stones' by hand. gotta love stuff like that
![]() there is one mistake in it, though. the top texture extends off the rocks and into the grout/filler in one contiguous sweep. a threshold and set alpha could have cured that. If wishes were horses... there'd be a whole lot of horse crap to clean up!

And if the author had used gradients instead of frame components, the filter would also work with 'size,pixels'...

You know, I've been thinking about releasing all these new 'bond types' as a snippet, but then I though that making a usable filter out of these would be better, which is where raised floor tiles and realistic grout come into play. I'm thinking of something like Mike Blackney's 'Classic Floor Tile'. Stay tuned! ![]() --- Crapadilla says: "Damn you, stupid redundant feature requests!" ;) |
