First attempt:

I'll do some more tomorrow.

Ok wait, that's a real pic, right 3D? It looks pretty real. Steve here made it sound like someone was rendering Nebulae! smile:|

Damn, this is HARD! AHH. smile:evil: Here's a pic of the stars so far though...

The big ones need more work... they use [[[[2]]]] motion blurs. I can't believe I'm doing this. Surprisingly it renders in 1.69 seconds with 9x AA. smile:D

I'll also be adding in colors to the stars, but that's a toughy, anyone got suggestions? smile:?:

ok, i officially hate you now, 3D ( smile:dgrin: ). how did you do the large stars? mine always turned out one of two ways, either circular with no beams or diamond shaped with very small beams.

If wishes were horses... there'd be a whole lot of horse crap to clean up!

and here's the diamond shaped one. i would have submitted this long ago had i just been able to get the larger stars right.

Actually I hope we all misinterpreted what ThreeDee said and that he didn't make it. That would make me feel so much better. smile:D

CRAP. Now I don't have a chance at making it. I was hoping I might be the first to submit one, since Steve suggested it. smile:evil: He got my hopes up DX.

Why is this thread even "In Progress"? ThreeDee, you're done, submit it.

O for crissakes!

I was happy with the stars (although they could have a softer glow) but the nebula that is supposed to be the main thing here is not all that exciting. Besides, you can only do one type of nebula with the filter at the moment.

The stars are done in three "layers" at three different sizes and the beams are motion blurs.

The nebula is the real issue here. It's got no depth and detail. And should be lit by starlight from surrounding stars to be more realistic. The real question is how much variation (with somewhat realistic results) could be achieved? There is plenty of variation between different nebulae like in the samples StevieJ posted. (Galaxies are their own thing, so I'm not going to try and do them here.)

I've got some other things to do for a while, so you have plenty of time to get there first...

nebulae are like rocks, 3D. you could do 100 filters on rocks and still not cover the entire gamut.

You could even "make up" your own perception of a nebulae, gallaxy, super nova, etc that no one has ever seen before.....who knows, it could be out there..... smile:devil:

there was a show on PBS about how they photograph and then render those images, steve. what you see in the images is not what the camera saw. they are essentially photoshopped a bit. actually, they have their own software for this, not photoshop and the colors correspond to different gases. they have their own RGB set where oxygen is blue, hydrogen is red (i think), and green is something else. i forget the complete method, but basically, what you are seeing is not what the camera saw, not exactly. still, it's freaking cool as hell and i always like perusing the NASA site. i even watch the NASA channel on satellite at times.

also, thanks, sphinx for the filter! i'll most likely take a look at it.

Yeah, what I find most interesting is that they see tons of other gallaxies when they look into the darkest area with not stars......like there is no end to it......infinite universe..... smile8)

I can't remember what it is called, but there is a program that is geared to create those "surreal" planet scenes.....I really like the first one that I posted on this page...... smile8)

Something like that shouldn't be too hard to create in FF, but it will be rather slow. There are several planet/moon filters in the lib, and if you dig up that normal map thing, you can actually shade the planets from the nebula light..

hehe, i've already mixed my own starfield filter and the flaregen filter. next is one of the zoomers so i can resize the flaregen stuff to something smaller. after that, add in some nebula. lol. way too complex and way too slow. i'm dying to see what 3D is doing with this.

oh wow! just realized something. you dont need to map the lighting with a normal or anything else! just found a new way to do most everything here and make it realistic! hehe, be back in a week smile;)

Oooo... great thread!

The funny thing about those really dense Hubble image nebulae is that they are actually lit by the stars within them, but are also cast a bit of shadow. (like in this image: LINK

Another vote for 'slope processing' nodes! (a heightmap --> normal map channel FF component) smile;)

I might have to get in on this later.

Could you load your nebulae image as a background HDRI? That might get some interesting effects on , say, a sphere heightmap. Btw: cool filter above, sphinx!

I think you're onto something with that idea..... smile:devil:

You could create a filter that "reflects" the straight HDRI image that has the stars, flares, nebulae clouds, etc as the background image.....then have the filter create the planets, etc on top of it.....also using it to "regurgitate" the result back into the HDRI towards constructing "scapes"......making the filter more like a "self-contained" tool as opposed to doing all the work in a graphics editor.....

Hey Betis smile:) I hope you didn't give up on this.....and grabbed ThreeDee's posted filter??? I was thinking that this could be a nice collaborative effort where everyone can learn some neat things.....and take their own unique "slice of the pie" when it's done. The possibilities are endless.....and only limited by your imagination..... smile:devil:

Check out the excellent 3D world/planet concept that ThreeDee and Corvus are working on.....that can be used used here.....
