nice, carl smile:)

ok, i'm glad you resurrected this thread. quite timely. silvertwist recently posted a coral filter. i thought it needed some work, so, i'm opening that subject up here, where i think it would get the best attention and because i think noise is goign to be the key to doing it well.

first, take a look at some real coral: http://images.google.com/images?q=cor...=en&tab=wi . there is a wild variety here, so we could make 50 filters and still not really do it all.

silvertwist's thread is here: http://www.filterforge.com/forum/read...1&TID=6544 . i posted some example pics there, already. i used the shark tank filter in one.

coral has so many varieties, one common fact is that polyps have little tenticles, making them quite hard I think to do them justice smile;)

yes, coral has a ton of varieties. that shld make it easy to get at least one or two varieties correct smile;) smile:D

these are based on perlins and/or blocks noise. they are relatively simple in construction.

Oooh... I like that first one Kraellin.
With a bit of variety in size it could also be made to look like sponge.

ah, good, sjeiti! i just looked at it again, and i'll have to open up the filter again. i thought it was already scaled up more than it is. i was shooting more for brain coral than sponge, though smile:)

i liked that last one, too, carl. reminded me of that polyp coral a bit.

lol on the spongebob smile:)

ok, i took that first one and enlarged it a bit and changed the roughness a little. it looks even better if you add a contrast/brightness adjustment layer in paint shop pro, but i left that out of this one to show you straight from the filter.

ok, this is long overdue on resurrecting this thread. i'd suggest to any one new to FF to check this thread out start to finish. this is one of those old resources that helped a lot of us out in earlier days and it shld not be allowed to slip into obscurity.

so, with all the new tools and components and just good old toys of beta 2, it's time to reopen the noise lab. too many cobwebs in here smile;)

i'm not going to lecture too much on this to start, but i will suggest that you take the original perlin noise ideas and start plugging them into bombers and elipses and polygons. dont use the free poly and free elipse; keep it seamless. instead of plugging perlins into perlins, try multiple perlins plugged into a bomber (non-hdr) and start tweaking. there's an array of stuff there not touched yet and with even more detail than our version one stuff.

here's just one example. this reminds me of coral underwater seen from above water.

how about a little cellular mitosis? ok, it's not very good, but it does show a couple interesting things that happen with the bombers.

thanks, carl, but the colors are all wrong on the 'cells' and they shld be more transparent, but i wanted to show some of the new possibilities.

and hi dilla smile:)

ok, here's a new update to the same filter. the basic idea is perlin into shape component into bomber. that's the basics. repeat that for however many bomber positions you want to fill. then, for variation, add some other noise types plugged into the perlins. add AO or any other of new effects you want. do make it a surface filter and add reflectivity and metallic for other interesting effects. there are a LOT of variations one can try. experiment. have fun smile:)

ok, here's a new texture from the update:

Hey Dilla, good to hear from you, you must have some interesting experiments with FF2 in your lair? smile:)

Actually, only very few. I just didn't have the time to create with FF2 as much as I wanted to.

thanks, carl. i'm hoping there'll be some scripting done in this area. i only know smatterings of scripting from working with filtermeister a small bit, so i'm hoping others will infuse some good stuff to use here.

this is from a filter i call 'rock - desert'. it's made with perlins and curve scripts... mostly. the curve scripts are almost straight from the menu with only one number altered in some of the math to change the curve. i probably just could have used normal curves, but wanted to try these out. i did use one regular wave curve.

we have not, by far, explored all the possibilities of noise smile:)

If taken further, I'd like to see the lighter, more continuous areas in white/smoky quartz..... smile:devil:

Challenge time!

Everyone, in case you happen upon some visual examples of "noise" that you think are not possible with FF, please post them here. The resident noise engineers may then attempt to create those with the existing tools, as spare time permits.

The purpose of the challenge: To refute StevieJ's premise that there are "noises" that cannot be made with FF. And fun! smile:D

Oh, and Craig... nice noise! I like the second one best. smile;)

and sphinx, i aint touchin that one! lol. that looks like a job for ThreeDee and his lightning filter! actually, i could probably come close, but those 'spokes' going out from each line would be tricky, especially without scripting, which i dont do yet.
