thanks Kraellin for putting this thread and I agree with you that there is a lot of interesting and useful stuff in this thread, although I know now and have promised that I will not give anymore any thanks in any old thread, so this is only as an answer to your email and not to bump this thread, and will not keep doing it

IS curious that is was very active until 2013 and then there has not been addded anything else in these 3 last years, a pity

I've submitted a new filter called "Mars Lander 1xx" to the library. hopefully, it will show up soon. that filter was a result of this thread and so I'm posting a picture here from that filter. if you get the filter, open it up and look at the use of the perlin noise component. that is one of the most versatile components we have.

So great to see this awesome thread still alive and kick'n (sort of). I've noticed something strange and wonderful about Veronoi (Cells) noise...

See the attached image... Nothing special right? It's just Cell noise used as the height map. But what does it look like to you? Does it appear to be a bunch spheres crammed together and overlapping? OR does it look like some sharply indented surface? Well, it might look like either one depending on how you perceive it! You might turn around and see it the other way when you see it next time. It somehow gives this ambiguous lighting effect, that takes on either form depending on some switch in your brain.

I was just wondering ...

1. Has anyone else noticed this before? (most likely)
2. Does anyone know a good way to "correct" it? In my case I want something like this that always appears to be indented and not a bunch of overlapping spheres.

A few things to note here. I believe studies have shown that humans are biased to interpret 2d images of surfaces as convex. I would imagine convex surfaces are more common in nature, leading to evolutionary bias. In nature, the sun almost always shines from above, so our brains have harder time figuring out surfaces lit from sides or from below.

If this particular image is interpreted as convex (as we are biased to do), the lowest points of the surface (lines between the overlapping spheres) should be darker as less light would reach these occluded areas. They are however the brightest parts of the image, leading to more confusion in the brain. Seeing the surface as concave seems more physically correct to me, but it's hard to fight the bias.

Adding more realistic lighting would probably help our brains make a better guess here - ambient occlusion and hard shadows. I guess there's no perfect solution, other than having actual depth information. smile:)

Completely agree with you emme. The problem with this particular type of noise (cell) is the lack of real shadows, yet another queue our brain needs in interpreting depth, distance, etc. etc. Also from my look at this particular example, it appears to be back lit, which I know is an illusion. So the 2d to 3d space in our brain may have trouble with this one.

Still playing catchup in the Forums, but this thread's been worth the read! Every example shown would immediately go into my download queue and into my surfacing pipeline if they were in the Library (apologies if they are, I just don't know what any of them are called, and I don't remember seeing them the last time I paged through the entire thing!).

Seriously, people, submit the dang things already! (Or at least share WIP filters?)

Heh.

Aaaa, you know it's like people hanging around the pigment shop a couple hundred years ago, hoping a renowned painter will give away their latest unsigned work that they can put their name on. No?

You might want to consider World Machine for your immediate erosion needs. Otherwise prepare for the long haul. Happy searching, scouring, and refashioning!

That's pretty much why I got World Machine in the first place. smile:D

The work shown in this thread is inspiring, though. I'm far from opposed to learning and experimenting on my own, but I'm not one to reinvent the wheel. Not when I'm looking at a Ferrari! After all, who can find the time to be the best at everything? It'll be some time before I can recreate what someone else has done masterfully. As much as I understand how much an artist puts of him/her self into a filter, and appreciate the need to conserve their uniqueness, I'm also one of those who lean best by taking things apart.

So, yeah, big fan of sharing and not too shy to nudge. I'm not trying to sign my name on anything, though. Perish the thought.

Considering the filters in question went from being regarded as
"dang things"
to
"I'm looking at a Ferrari! / what someone else has done masterfully."
and you are saying
"I'm not trying to sign my name on anything."
when 3 of your 6 filters are remixes of Emme's Landform, ahhh, alright, I'll go back to being amused in the background now...

Counting this one, the last five posts are really off topic. They can cheerfully be deleted, and we can go back to talking about interesting noise.

Agreed?

This thread has already more than 205.000 views amd I understand it because is really very interesting and useful and would be good that it could be continue increasing and add more things

I will try myself to put something related to noise that I am experimenting and testing

Here's a texture I came up with today. I don't know what you'd use it for, but it's interesting so I decided to share it.

Here's an example of a texture filter I'm working on. It uses a snippet called " Tatters&Rags" by Crapadilla. I'm not completely satisfied with it, but it's a good start.
