no offense, 3D, but i think i like the first reddish one better. this last jigs and jags out too much. the other is more streamlined like real lightning. and the first would also be easier to mask to make the ends taper.

Hmm. My reference looks a whole lot like this one. Maybe a bit less jiggy-jaggy on the main bolt, but otherwise very close. Maybe I should look at other pix.

BRB, movies.

Too regular?

I'll do some more irregular tests tomorrow. If it doesn't look better, then I'll leave it at that.

yeah, it's a bit regular on the branches, but i love the main bolt and looks like you've got the tapering down pat, too! but, i wouldnt get too picky on that. it's already quite good. just put in some variables to alter the pattern and that shld be fine.

if you finish this this weekend and submit it, post it in the forums too. i dont want to wait for monday smile:)

Okay, my patience ran out on trying to make it more irregular -- too much work. I'll submit it like it is now.

(Kraellin, if you want a copy before Monday, send me an email with an address that I can send directly to. I can't attach anything it if I send it via FF email.)

ok, had a chance to look at the guts a bit. i'm glad to see you have an ordered mind. most filter guts i look at i have to spend the first half hour sorting and arranging in order to make sense of things. yours i didnt. nice smile:)

very interesting how you put together all those components in order to get just a few simple lines at the end. very cool smile:)

if i can trim this thing down significantly, i'll send you back a copy.

it reminds me of the way uber and some others constructed things smile:)

TD,

on my rig, your filter took 1 min, 31 seconds to render, with anti-aliasing turned on. i've managed to cut it down to 9.83 seconds with a comparable render. now, before you think i'm gloating or bragging or trying to rub your nose in it, you shld know mine isnt nearly as elegant. the strands arent based on the bolt like yours and mine relies on a LOT of apparency rather than actuality... in other words, i'm tricking the eye a bit. so, it's a compromise, quality for speed. i'm gonna need that speed if i add this to my storm clouds, especially if i do some of the other things we talked about. and the whole is still based on your routines, mostly.

anyways, here's one of the better shots:

Hi Kraellin,

You proved one theory right -- I was thinking the render time could be cut down to 1/10th if smartly optimized. smile:D

Yup, speed is of the essence if you're going to include this into a bigger filter.

Maybe we can invite Betis and a few others into our secret project and start a secret thread on it in some secret FF subforum where nobody can see it. smile;)

Now, about that gloating and bragging... smile:dgrin:

hehehe, i think dilla and uber already have a secret forum somewhere. maybe we can get in on that one smile;)

and as for gloating and bragging, i was truly impressed by how you got those branching lines. simple genius!

and sure, bring in whomever you wish. this is really your baby, not mine and i'll only be working on it on the side.

and i hope you got the email with the filter itself.

So, I'm wondering if anyone has good techniques for making branching and cracking patterns in FF? Thinking Cracks, Veins, Branches, etc. Thanks in advance!

YES! Exactly this is what I was thinking and wondering how this would be possible in FF and I have just suggested to make something like this to make vein formation in leaves

Perhaps with the new loop component, it could be done something like shown above (this has been taken from this video shown here that is based on the process of vein formation in leaves

I have remembered about this thread when searching for another thing and I want to thanks for the authors of the filters on page one, as they are interesting to see how this can be done in different ways and could be developed much more.

With these one I will experiment and see what other combinations and variations I can do to get other cool effects

Does anyone have a more complex and more fibrous way of making this crack effect like the example on the above post?

I want to also put here some other filters I have found in the library that are related to this ones

Cracks Stencil by ronviers

Crackle Snippet by Indigo Ray

Broken Asphalt by Genie

If you have seen seen any other filter that could be used to make this kind of crackling effect would be good to know it, thanks.

Yes the vein formation in leaves video that Spaceray shows is a very interesting pattern. Would love to see that as an FF filter

Yes, I would love also to see it, but I think that it woud be much more difficult than a simple branching, as I think this vein formation enters into the fractal world and maybe would be much more difficult to make. If is already difficult to make just one lighting bolt in a good way, to make those vein formation I have shown would be much more difficult to make without a math script (even then I do not know if really it would be possible to make in FF)

I wonder if there could be any additional way to make more kind of cracking and similar effects now that there are loops and other new components

thanks

Some of the methods that I used for the Fractal FIlters can be modded for this...Although its not for the faint at heart.. smile;) smile:)

Is a pity that most of the images of this thread has been disabled, I really love this thread

I wish there could be even more examples and filters about this interesting and cool topic

Here is a possible example for this thread about this awesome and great filter
