Im having a hard time making cracks and scratches, anyone done anything like this already, the best i have made so far is using the motion blur but this just makes straight ones so not very realistic.

One solution might be using some custom profile with a stretched noise or stones component. Masking off some areas to make the resulting high-contrast noise less uniform and feeding it into a noise distortion might be an adequate finisher. smile:D

Here's a solution I just used for some sparse, thin scratches. It offsets the stretched noise just a tiny bit an then lightens (blend) the result over the original noise.

Thanks Sjeiti smile:) What do you guys think about a module just for cracks, i think we need one, why you might ask, well although i find tips like yours very useful they don't create realistic cracks as those sort of branch at various points like a tree does, scratches i think we don't have to worry about though smile:)

james,

check out my 'glass menagerie' filter. it can be tweaked, i think, to approximate cracks. and with a little work, it might have some other uses along those lines.

Cool thanks i will check it out, i have been away for a while but im back now (hopefully) so i will definately check that out, i still think a dedicated module that scratches up/wears down the texture/image would be great idea. Im thinking it would be great for building scratched metal/wood surfaces. Until then though these suggestion are a great help so thanks all smile:D

I already have it on my list, most likely it will be based on the Bomber codebase.

i just ran across one in the filter library. it's not cracks so much, but close. i think it was called 'cracked paint'. quite a good filter!
