			I'm not sure what it does exactly. (Other than make images dark/light while clipping highlights/shadows)

			Nevermind, I just figured it out,  Its just a basic linear curve.  On another note photoshop CS3 aparently has a new formula for brightness/contrast than doesn't clip shadows/highlights as quickly.  That might be good for FF as well.
 
			Anyway here's a snippet that breaks down what brightness does for those that are curious.... Brightness Explained.ffxml  |

			Yes, basically it is an addition/subtraction -- it can be achieved by moving the tone curve upwards/downwards. BTW we've just finished a help article on tone curves that has examples with brightness and contrast:
