Since SpaceRay bumped a thread talking about filter challenges, I think it's time to do one.
Here's the idea: I'm going to post a picture of a texture I found here that I find particularly generic but useful for general 3D art. Our goal is to: 1. Make a very realistic procedural filter that's close the original photograph. So details should be all there as close to the photo as possible. 2. But make the filters extremely flexible for reuse and allow for creative direction. So you're not stuck making the same visual image over and over... but at least have a couple sliders to alter its over all look. Don't worry if you don't have experience doing 3D art, ask questions about it. I'm usually here most of the time to answer questions in regarding shading and lighting. While we're at it, we might as well talk about what makes useful outputs for 3D work. Rules: 1. Make your own filters. Snippets are allowed but make sure you credit the people who made those parts. 2. Let's just say that what's in this forum thread is purposed for learning purposes only. Please do not use the filters or textures found on this forum post for commercial and/or non-commercial purposes. If you're an author and you want to share your work with everybody else, put it in the public library. 3. No low-effort. This is a challenge. Break out of your comfort zone. Explore the new world. ------------ TL;DR: Make realistic filters based on the photo. Ask questions, be cool. Rule 1: Make your own stuff. Rule 2: Filters on a forum aren't for commercial or non-commercial purposes. Authors should upload to library if you want to share. Rule 3: No low-effort. |

Maybe add some grit/sand, rather than streaks? The original looks more blotchy, to my eyes, and yours looks a bit more fabric-y -- but it is good.
(BTW, I'm still not getting notice of forum replies via email . . . don't know what's going on, but have been having trouble for a week or more.) |

I agree about the tile surface. I think the rest of it is pretty close. I probably will start adding controls (for color, amount of distortion, tile size, # rows etc) and an option between a more gritty look and the current scratched floor look. Thanks for the critique

With the texture as is, but some colors and a bit bigger squares, it would make a nice quilt

On further reflection, maybe if you combined it with your colors-that-don't-touch filter, maybe that would make a great quilting example!

Hrm. I wonder if off-hand anyone knows a pre-existing rock/stone texture that has a similar appearance, only not broken up into tiles? Could just hork and adapt. I say that as someone who knows nothing about building filters
![]() Eh, hold on. Horking and adapting is against the rules, isn't it? It would be really interesting to see this as an, um . . . radar photo? A pure height/bump map taken from the physical surface, if anything exists that can produce that. Do such things exist? You refer to the prophecy of the pastry that will bring balance to the Force. And you believe it's this...donut? |

I thought it was fine -- encouraged even -- to adapt others filters for one's own use . . . it just wasn't considered polite to use others' work and then submit the results as one's own filter. At least give credit where it is due if you do use another filter as the basis for yours.
BTW, I haven't submitted any filters, but I have tried to adapt a few when I wanted different results. There is a metallic effect that I love but it is way too dark and I've tried to lighten it up, for instance. I'm a newbie, though, so others with more experience had better chime in. |

Wow! It's been a bit before I could make a response here.
I'm going to try it myself. Are there bumpmaps / normal maps? I can feed it into a 3D app if you're interested in seeing it in 3D. |

I am going to post what I have so far. I have not added many controls. I think I will release this filter once I've added color & noise controls and refined it some more etc etc. I am no expert in the noise components... This has 3 types of tile surface noise, scratch, marble, and grit. The previous post of mine is grit.
Yes, it has the lighting model, so all of the maps are available. Sure, give it a 3d spin ![]() Old Tile Floor alpha.ffxml Math meets art meets psychedelia. |

Kind of tough releasing Old Tile Floor, when this exists: Aged Stone Tiles.
