Hi everyone,

I'm new here, so saying hi.

Sorry if this topic has been covered already. I did try to do a search and didn't really find anything covering this though.

I work for a sign company and we run into this somewhat often. We have a few large format digital printers and we also have a few large format flatbed printers. We have a set of high resolution images that we use on smaller inserts. The problem is matching the texture on very large inserts. We have a 300dpi Curly Maple texture that is 10"h x 8"w. We need to fit it on a 30"h x 17" wide insert for a stanchion. The rest of the job has this same pattern printed on it. Originally we were going to use a laminate made by a Japanese company that was close enough to match, but the company is on a long backorder for the material. The order needs to ship soon, so no way to go that route. So my question is, what is the best way to go about matching an existing texture, if there is one? It doesn't have to be exactly the same, but it should look like they match close enough to use. I've found a few pre-made wood filters here that are for burled wood, that come somewhat close. I tried adjusting the filter but the color and pattern are way too far off to use.

It won't let me attach the image for some reason, so I'll link to it in a flickr account. https://flic.kr/p/HQk1fW

Thanks for any help!

I'm not 100% sure I understand the exact problem, but if you need to create a larger texture from a smaller one, this is one filter that can do it:

https://www.filterforge.com/filters/9078.html

It takes a non-seamless input image (you original Curly Maple image, in this case) and blends it so that the output tile is seamless, meaning you can repeat it for a larger image area. Not sure if it works on non-square, so you may need to crop to crop your original to a square first.

Since Threedee posted the filter link already I will just post an example.. smile;) smile:)

The filter will take your image of any size and slice it to create an image that tiles seamless so that you can create a bigger image from that.....Like other Photoshop plug-ins some images look better then others...Such as the image that you posted has a darken tone at the top so this color graduation always looks odd when using some type of tiling aid....So its best to either cut some of that out of the image or try to make the image the same tone and fix that in the clean-up after the fact.......
Here is an example of the image you post using the filter after I cut it......

Then here it is running it through the filter...You can always clean-up the image after the fact to make it look less repeated or just cut the image in a different spot...

Then there is the long way and that is take an existing filter such as the one that you said looks close and edit the filter to match what you are looking for....Matching ready made textures with an already made filter is kinda hard without actually editing the filter. The author of said filter may have not had that certain texture in mind while creating the filter....
So with every texture that you have there may need to be a unique filter created/edited per texture...

Thanks ThreeDee and CFandM for the replies! I'm on an iPad now, but I'll check this out in more detail later when I'm on my desktop. This looks like it may do what I need. Usually I do mirror the image, but this one especially looks like a tie dye when done that way. I appreciate the input.

Ok sorry for the dumb noob question. How do I tell FF the pixel dimensions and dpi that I need?
(9000h x 5100w @ 300dpi - 30"h x 17"w)

Again thanks for the help! I cropped off the darker top edge and also made it square. So I think I'm pretty happy with the way I can get this to tile. I just need to be able to output it to the size I need.

Create the tile only in Filter Forge. Once you have a tile, open it in Photoshop and define a pattern, create the final size document and fill with the pattern.

Thanks for the help. Sorry I didn't reply sooner. Was really busy at work today. I'll see how the tiling works in Photoshop.
